The Best 'It’s Always Sunny' Episode From Each Season

Voting Rules
Vote up the episodes that are all-time great episodes of 'Always Sunny.'

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is officially the longest-running live-action sitcom in television history. That's pretty impressive for a show that's never won an Emmy and frequently addresses the existence of "toe knives."

There have been 14 seasons of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and each one is consistently more insane than the last. The show is one of the most consistently funny shows in TV history, but even a show this good has episodes that stand out. Every season has a handful of gems that are just so funny or so absurd that they stick in your brain long after the episode has finished.

If you had to choose just one episode from each season as "the best," which would you choose? Based on user ratings from sites like Metacritic, Rotten Tomatoes, and IMDb, these are the fan-favorite episodes of each season.

  • Season 4 - The Nightman Cometh
    Photo: FX

What The Episode Is About: Charlie writes a musical and casts the Gang in the starring roles.

What Makes It The Best: If you haven't seen "The Nightman Cometh," you need to correct that immediately. This is one of the highest-rated episodes of the entire show, and for good reason. We really get to see Charlie's musical talent shine in this one, and the story of the Dayman vs. Nightman is the most absurd thing you'll watch on TV all day.

Other Honorable Mentions: Season 4 continues the Sunny hot streak with a whole collection of fantastic episodes. "Sweet Dee Has a Heart Attack" features Charlie's "Pepe Silvia" conspiracy, "Who Pooped the Bed?" is the mystery story of our generation, and "The Gang Solves the Gas Crisis" is so good that they just blatantly recycled the idea in a later season.

Season 9 - The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award

Season 9 - The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award

What The Episode Is About: Believing that they have been overlooked for too long, the Gang attempts to win the title of "Philidelphia's Best Bar."

What Makes It The Best: This episode was Sunny's response to having never won an Emmy, so the whole thing is very meta. They lampoon popular sitcoms and even try to win the "best song" award. Charlie's theme song for Paddy's Pub and subsequent "spider" performance are definite highlights of the episode.

Other Honorable Mentions: If you're a fan of Sweet Dee, "The Gang Broke Dee" is definitely one of her funniest episodes of the entire series. Other highlights include "Mac Day," "The Gang Makes Lethal Weapon 6," and "The Gang Squashes Their Beefs."

Season 2 - Dennis and Dee Go on Welfare

Season 2 - Dennis and Dee Go on Welfare

What The Episode Is About: In an attempt to emancipate themselves from their jobs, Dennis and Dee formulate a plan to get on welfare.

What Makes It The Best: This is the episode where the twins first get hooked on crack, and it's one of the funniest episodes of the entire series. Their crack habit still manages to catch up with them occasionally, even a decade after they first got hooked.

Other Honorable Mentions: Technically, "Mac Bangs Dennis' Mom" has a higher score on IMDb and while it's hilarious, it doesn't have the same impact on the series as the welfare episode.

    Season 10 - Charlie Work

    Season 10 - Charlie Work

What The Episode Is About: As a health inspection looms, Charlie is the only one in the bar willing to do whatever it takes to pass the inspection.

What Makes It The Best: "Charlie Work" is the highest-rated episode of the entire series, period. It's pretty clear that Charlie is arguably the most beloved character on the show, and this episode really shows why. He's earnest, hard-working, and much more clever than people give him credit for. The weird chicken/steak scam the rest of the Gang has going on is pretty amusing, as well.

Other Honorable Mentions: While "Charlie Work" is the obvious standout of the season, episodes like "The Gang Goes on Family Fight" are also some of the best of the series. This season also includes "The Gang Beats Boggs" and "The Gang Misses the Boat."

    Season 5 - The D.E.N.N.I.S. System

    Season 5 - The D.E.N.N.I.S. System

What The Episode Is About: Dennis explains his disturbing method for wooing women.

What Makes It The Best: This is the first introduction of the infamous D.E.N.N.I.S. System, and it really clues us in on just how crazy Dennis really is. This episode also features Ben the Soldier as Dee's lap dog of a boyfriend.

Other Honorable Mentions: "Paddy's Pub: Home of the Original Kitten Mittens" is a close, close second to "The D.E.N.N.I.S. System" in terms of quality and hilarity.

  • Season 6 - A Very Sunny Christmas
    Photo: FX

What The Episode Is About: After dealing with years of Frank buying gifts for himself, Dee and Dennis decide to teach him a lesson Ebenezer Scrooge-style. Meanwhile, Mac and Charlie begin to realize that their childhood Christmases were a bit darker than they remembered.

What Makes It The Best: The scene with Charlie and the mall Santa is enough by itself to put this episode at the top of the season - everything else is just a bonus.

Other Honorable Mentions: The Halloween party episode "Who Got Dee Pregnant?" is another standout in an outstanding season.
