Similar to the parental-like dynamic of Hyakkimaru and Dororo, Nanashi and Kotarou are the bread and butter of Sword of the Stranger. In the 2007 animated movie, Nanashi reluctantly becomes Kotaro's bodyguard and protects the child from assassins sent by China's Ming Dynasty for reasons unknown. As the film goes on, Nanashi begins to re-evaluate his life as a wandering samurai.

From the creators of Cowboy Bebop comes Samurai Champloo. Similar to the over-the-top action and jazzy beats that fueled the former, Samurai Champloo is an episodic action series that's infused with incredible action and fantastic hip-hop melodies. A former waitress named Fuu Kasumi hires two samurai bodyguards of completely different temperament to help her find her long-lost father.

Dororo and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood deal with dark arts and lost limbs. Hyakkimaru's father sold off his son's organs to 48 demons in exchange for power. In contrast, the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse, lost their human limbs when they tried to resurrect their dead mother through alchemy. Ed lost his leg and arm, while Al lost his physical body. As State Alchemists, Ed and Al are trying to regain what was lost to them years ago, by searching for the fabled Philosopher's Stone.

Inuyasha is another period anime like Dororo that explores a demon-infested Feudal Japan. Modern schoolgirl, Kagome Higurashi, is dragged into ancient Japan and discovers she's a reincarnation of a mystical shrine maiden named Kikyou. Not only that, a powerful wish-granting jewel called the Shikon Jewel had been sealed within her. However, the Shikon Jewel got shattered across the land. To help her find the missing pieces of the Shikon Jewel, Kagome enlists the help of a half-human/half-demon named Inuyasha.
