The 13 Best Anime Like The Rising of the Shield Hero

List RulesVote up the best anime for fans of The Rising of the Shield Hero.

The Rising of the Shield Hero is one of the most popular shows of the Winter 2019 anime season. The show follows Naofumi Iwatani, a college student who is suddenly thrust into a new world to fulfill the role of the shield hero. Already looked down on for a role he didn't choose, he winds up being horrifically betrayed by his only comrades, and forced to fend for himself in a strange new land. If you love what it has to offer, you're probably looking for anime similar to The Rising of the Shield Hero. If so, this list offers some quality recommendations.

Most anime like The Rising of the Shield Hero exist in the same genre - isekai. Isekai anime take the characters out of their usual setting - usually their lives on Earth - and then transport them to a new and fantastical world. Coincidentally, a lot of these characters are gamers who would easily take to the game like worlds they'll have to inhabit. But just like in The Rising of the Shield Hero, adjusting to a new world is far from easy. Shows like Re:Zero, Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions, and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime show how challenging it can be. An anime doesn't have to be an isekai to share themes of The Rising of the Shield Hero, though - My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU is a high school club anime, but the protagonist's bitterness and experience with social betrayal is just like Naofumi's.

Which of these anime do you think are the best The Rising of the Shield Hero recommendations? Vote them up to let the world know what you think.

Being transported to another world isn't always what one would hope or expect it to be. In Naofumi's case, the problem is that due to a series of betrayals and misunderstandings, he's forced to exist at the bottom of his new society, with no choice but to try and save the world anyway if he ever wants to make it home. That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime takes a far more light-hearted look at this premise by having the protagonist be reincarnated into a magical world not as a dragon, a warrior, or something else that seems cool, but as a slime. But both Naofumi and Rinmaru will learn to thrive in their new environments in spite of their difficulties.

Unlike Naofumi, Bell Cranel is native to his magical world - but the tasks he must complete are pretty similar. He starts off as a weakling who needs to gain strength through a video game style system of 'leveling up' and he also has to gather party members to help him. Ultimately, he becomes much more powerful and competent, but it's a hard and rocky road to get to that point.

When Momonga's favorite online game shuts down, he decides to spend the games' last moments logged into the server. Rather than being kicked off as he expects, he winds up being transported to a real version of the game as his character, the dark wizard who controls a guild called Ainz Ooal Gown. The world still operates with gamelike mechanics, but the inherent dangers have dramatically increased. This is similar to Naofumi's predicament - both of them must adapt to a game-like fantasy world, and both of them start off on the "villains" side, though in Naofumi's case it's not by choice.

Like Shield Hero, How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord is about an isekai scenario gone wrong. Takuma Sakamoto is a shut-in who spends all his time leveling up his MMO character, Demon King Diablo. One day, he's summoned into the world of the game by two girls who try to cast a spell to turn him into their slave. The spell backfires, and they end up being bound to serve him instead. That's the other thing that the two shows have in common - both of them are willing to address controversial themes like slavery - although their success at doing so is up for debate.
