It's time to look at recommendations for anime similar toWelcome to the N.H.K. This series about the lives of young adults in Tokyo ran for 24 episodes back in 2006, but many fans who just discovered the show are hungry for more similar anime.
For starters, there's the 2011 anime series Steins;Gate, a sci-fi adventure that like Welcome to the N.H.K. also centers on a core group and their (time-traveling) lives. Still other similar anime include The Tatami Galaxy, Genshiken, and ReLIFE. You could also check out Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei, as well as SOS Brigade where the core group consists of an alien, a time traveler, an esper, a mysterious girl, and a high school boy.

The Tatami Galaxy is a Japanese campus novel written by Tomihiko Morimi. The novel was adapted into an 11-episode anime television series of the same name which aired on Fuji Television's noitamina programming block from April 22 to July 1, 2010. The story of The Tatami Galaxy follows an unnamed third year university student in Kyoto, Japan and what he views as his wasted time in a particular club (also called "circle") at his university.
Colorful is a 2010 Japanese animated feature film directed by Keiichi Hara. It is based on the novel of the same name written by Eto Mori, produced by Sunrise and animated by the animation studio Ascension. It also deals with some of the pressures on school children as they come up to graduation before entering college or university. Most of the backgrounds in the film are rotoscoped, where photos and film have been realistically traced.
