Pete Maravich

A list of the best Atlanta Hawks of all time. The Atlanta Hawks began as the Buffalo Bison in 1946. After bouncing around and changing names a few times, before landing in St. Louis in 1955. Those years in St. Louis featured a number of the greatest players in Hawks history. Hall of Famer Bob Pettit was the star of those Hawks teams of the late '50s and the Hawks captured the franchise's only title in 1958 behind their all star forward.&nbsp;The team moved to Atlanta in 1968 where it has remained since. a handful of all stars and even Hall of Famers played for the Hawks during its time in Atlanta. However, despite having a number of great players, the Hawks have never advanced past the second round of the playoffs in the Atlanta era. Dominique Wilkins led some of the entertaining Atlanta teams in the 1980s. Wilkins is one of the most popular players in Hawks history, and one if its best. The high flying Wilkins was a prolific scorer and multiple time slam dunk champion. Doc Rivers, Tree Rollins and Spud Webb are other players who are considered some of the best Hawks ever and some of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/the-top-nba-players-of-all-time">best players of all time</a>. More recently, Joe Johnson, Al Horford and Josh Smith are all star players who have led the Hawks and are some of the best players of the past decade.This is the list of the best Atlanta Hawks of all time. Bob Pettit

Robert Lee Pettit Jr. (born December 12, 1932) is an American retired professional basketball player. He played 11 seasons in the NBA, all with the Milwaukee/St. Louis Hawks (1954–1965). He was the first recipient of the NBA's Most Valuable Player Award. He also won the NBA All-Star Game MVP award four times, a feat matched only by Kobe Bryant. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1970.

Josh Smith

Joshua Smith (born December 5, 1985) is an American professional basketball player who last played for the New Orleans Pelicans of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Entering the NBA straight out of high school, Smith played nine seasons with the Atlanta Hawks before playing for the Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers between 2013 and 2016. He is sometimes referred to by his nickname "J-Smoove".

Paul Millsap

Paul Millsap (born February 10, 1985) is an American professional basketball player for the Denver Nuggets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). A power forward from Louisiana Tech University, Millsap was selected by the Utah Jazz in the second round (47th overall) of the 2006 NBA draft and was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. He played in Utah until 2013, when he became a member of the Hawks. He is a four-time NBA All-Star.

Kevin Willis

Kevin Alvin Willis (born September 6, 1962) is an American former professional basketball player mostly known for playing with the Atlanta Hawks in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was a 7-foot power forward/center.
Willis is one of fifteen players in NBA history with over 16,000 career points and 11,000 career rebounds. He was named to the NBA Eastern Conference All-Star Team in 1992, when he finished the season with a career-high average of 15.5 rebounds a game. 
Willis holds career averages of 12.2 ppg, 8.4 rpg, and 0.9 apg while averaging 27 minutes per game in 21 NBA seasons. During his 23 years in the league, Willis won one championship, with the San Antonio Spurs in 2003. He shares the record for most seasons played in the NBA with Robert Parish, Kevin Garnett, Vince Carter and Dirk Nowitzki. 
During the 2004–05 season, Willis was the oldest player in the league at age 42, and he would continue to be until his retirement at the conclusion of the 2006–07 season at the age of 44.

John Collins

John Martin Collins III (born September 23, 1997) is an American professional basketball player for the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. On June 22, 2017, Collins was selected with the nineteenth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. On July 1, 2017, he signed a rookie-scaled deal with the Hawks. During the 2017 NBA Summer League, he earned All-Summer League First Team honors due to his performances with the Hawks. On January 23, 2019, John Collins recorded a career high 35 points in a 121-101 win over the Chicago Bulls.On April 10, 2019, John Collins scored 20 points and recorded a career-high 25 rebounds in a 135-134 loss to the Indiana Pacers in the Hawks' season finale.

John Drew

John Edward Drew (born September 30, 1954) is a retired American professional basketball player. A 6'6" guard/forward from Gardner–Webb University, he played 11 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Drew was a two-time NBA All-Star, and was one of the earliest casualties of the drug policy instituted by commissioner David Stern.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim

Shareef Abdur-Rahim (born December 11, 1976) is an American retired professional basketball player who is currently president of the NBA G League. He was also the director of player personnel for the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the general manager of the Reno Bighorns, the Kings' minor-league affiliate. He last played in the NBA for the Kings. On the basketball court, he played both forward or center positions. Abdur-Rahim was a standout player during his high school days. He left University of California, Berkeley after one year to enter the 1996 NBA draft.
In his early NBA career, Abdur-Rahim was the star of the Vancouver Grizzlies for five seasons. He was traded by the Grizzlies in 2001 and then played for the Atlanta Hawks and Portland Trail Blazers before joining his last team, the Sacramento Kings. Nicknamed "Reef", Abdur-Rahim was named an NBA All-Star in the 2001–02 season. He also played on the United States men's national basketball team that won the gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Prior to joining the Kings, despite the fact that he achieved solid statistics throughout his career, Abdur-Rahim shared the NBA record for most games played without making a playoff appearance. Following persistent injuries to his right knee, Abdur-Rahim announced his retirement from basketball on September 22, 2008.

Dan Roundfield

Danny Thomas Roundfield (May 26, 1953 – August 6, 2012) was an American professional basketball player. The 6'8" forward/center graduated from Detroit's Chadsey Senior High School in 1971. On the collegiate scene, Roundfield was twice selected to the All-Mid-American Conference Team for Central Michigan University; he was also the 1975 M.A.C. Player of the Year.
Roundfield spent 12 seasons in the American Basketball Association and National Basketball Association, playing for the Indiana Pacers (1975–1978), Atlanta Hawks (1978–1984), Detroit Pistons (1984–1985), and Washington Bullets (1985–1987).  Then he moved to Turin, playing for Auxilium Torino.
Roundfield earned a reputation as a strong rebounder and tenacious defender, and during his career he was named to five NBA All-Defensive teams and three All-Star teams. His nickname was Dr. Rounds.
Roundfield was selected to the NBA Eastern Conference All-Star team in three consecutive seasons from 1980–1982. He was unable to play in 1982, due to an injury. Roundfield certainly made the most of his 1980 All-Star appearance debut, he scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in just 27 minutes of play coming off the bench. Roundfield came close to winning the MVP award for his fine performance being overshadowed by fellow Detroit product George Gervin's 34 point output.
Roundfield lived in Atlanta, where he worked for Camp Dresser & McKee Inc.
Roundfield died in Aruba in August 2012, drowning after helping his wife, Bernadine, to safety.

Antoine Walker

Antoine Devon Walker (born August 12, 1976) is an American former professional basketball player. He was drafted with the sixth overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft out of the University of Kentucky and played in the NBA from 1996 to 2008. Walker played for the Celtics, Mavericks, Hawks, Heat, Timberwolves, the BSN's Mets and the NBA D-League's Stampede before retiring from basketball in 2012. Walker, a three-time NBA All-Star, won an NCAA championship with Kentucky in 1996 and an NBA championship with the Miami Heat in 2006.

Christian Laettner

Christian Donald Laettner (, LAYT-nər; born August 17, 1969) is a retired American basketball player whose Hall of Fame career for the Duke Blue Devils is widely regarded as one of the best in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) history. He was the star player on the back-to-back National Championship teams of 1991 and 1992, and the NCAA player of the year in his senior year. He is particularly famous for his game-winning shot against Kentucky in the 1992 tournament and for the hatred he received from opposing fans.
Laettner was the only collegian selected for the elite "Dream Team" that dominated the 1992 Olympics; the team is enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He was drafted third overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves, then played 13 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for six teams. The highlight was being selected for the 1997 All-Star Game while with the Atlanta Hawks.

Al Harrington

Albert Harrington (born February 17, 1980) is an American former professional basketball player. Selected with the 25th overall pick in the 1998 NBA draft, Harrington played 16 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Indiana Pacers, Atlanta Hawks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic and Washington Wizards. He also spent a short stint with the Fujian Sturgeons of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).
Since retiring from the NBA, Harrington has become an entrepreneur in the cannabis industry.  Harrington is a cousin of NBA player Dahntay Jones.

Rasheed Wallace

Rasheed Abdul Wallace (born September 17, 1974) is an American former professional basketball player who played 16 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). A native of Philadelphia, Wallace played college basketball at the University of North Carolina before moving on to the NBA in 1995.
Originally selected by the Washington Bullets (now known as the Washington Wizards) as the fourth pick in the 1995 NBA draft, Wallace was named to the All-Rookie second team following his first season. He was then traded to the Portland Trail Blazers after the season. With Portland he was a key member of the Trail Blazers team that made it to the Western Conference Finals in 1999 and 2000, and was an NBA All-Star in 2000 and 2001. Wallace averaged a career best 19.4 points per game in 2002 for the Trail Blazers.
During the 2003–04 season Portland traded him to the Atlanta Hawks where he played one game before he was traded to the Detroit Pistons. With the Pistons, Wallace won the NBA championship in 2004, but lost the NBA Finals in the following season. Individually, Wallace was an NBA All-Star in 2006 and 2008. After the 2008–09 season, Wallace left the Pistons as a free agent and signed with the Boston Celtics, where he played until retiring in 2010. He returned to sign a one-year deal to play for the New York Knicks in 2012. On April 17, 2013, Wallace announced his second retirement.
Wallace holds the single-season record for technical fouls. In the 2000–01 season, Wallace received 41 technical fouls over a span of 80 games, about one technical foul for every two games.

Danny Manning

Daniel Ricardo Manning (born May 17, 1966) is an American college basketball coach and retired National Basketball Association player. He is the current men's head coach at  Wake Forest. Manning played high school basketball at Lawrence High School in Lawrence, Kansas, college basketball at The University of Kansas, and played in the NBA for 14 years. After retiring from professional basketball Manning became an assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Kansas. He won the national championship with the Jayhawks in 1988 as a player, and again as an assistant in 2008. He is the all-time leading scorer in Kansas basketball history with 2,951 points. The next closest player to his point total is Nick Collison, who is 854 points behind Manning.

Bill Bridges

William C. Bridges (April 4, 1939 – September 25, 2015) was an American basketball player.
A 6'6" power forward from Hobbs, New Mexico, Bridges played collegiately for the University of Kansas.  At Kansas, he averaged 13.2 points and 13.9 rebounds per game, was chosen All-Big Eight three seasons, and was an All-American in 1961.Bridges played for the Kansas City Steers of the American Basketball League prior to entering the NBA.  Bridges led the ABL in rebounding during both seasons he played for the Steers, and led the league in scoring during his second season.  He set the ABL single-game scoring record with 55 points on December 9, 1962.  The league folded at the end of 1962, and the Steers were declared ABL champions.
Bridges then entered the National Basketball Association and spent 13 seasons (1962–1975) as a member of the St. Louis/Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Golden State Warriors.  Bridges won an NBA Championship with the Warriors in 1975 and appeared in three All-Star Games during the course of his career.  Though somewhat undersized for his position, Bridges was a strong rebounder and averaged a double-double (11.9 points, 11.9 rebounds) over the course of his NBA career. He is also the only player besides Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain and Willis Reed to record more than 35 rebounds in a playoff game. Bridges' league leading 366 personal fouls during the 1967–68 season was, at the time, an NBA record.Bridges died in Los Angeles, California at the age of 76  following a battle with cancer.

Truck Robinson

Leonard Eugene "Truck" Robinson (born October 4, 1951) is an American retired professional basketball player. He played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Washington Bullets (1974–77), Atlanta Hawks (1977), New Orleans Jazz (1977–79), Phoenix Suns (1979–82), and New York Knicks (1982–85).
He helped the Bullets win the 1975 NBA Eastern Conference and the Suns win the 1981 NBA Pacific Division.
Robinson was named to the 1978 East All-Star Team and the 1981 West All-Star Team.
He was named to the 1978 All-NBA First Team.
Robinson led the NBA in minutes played (3,638), defensive rebounds (990), total rebounds (1,288) and rebounds per game (15.7) during the 1977–78 season.
He ranks 86th on the NBA/ABA career offensive rebounds list (1,985), 43rd on the career defensive rebounds list (5,282), 81st on the total rebounds list (7,267) and 73rd on the career rebounds per game list (9.4).
In 11 seasons Robinson played in 772 games, stayed 25,141 minutes on the court and had a .483 field goal percentage (4,816 for 9,971), .662 free throw percentage (2,355 for 3,556), 7,267 total rebounds (1,985 offensive and 5,282 defensive), 1,348 assists, 533 steals, 510 blocks, 2,253 personal fouls and 11,988 points.
He was recently hired as an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings.

DeMarre Carroll

DeMarre LaEdrick Carroll (born July 27, 1986) is an American professional basketball player for the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Carroll was selected 27th overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2009 NBA draft and has also played for the Houston Rockets, Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz, Atlanta Hawks, Toronto Raptors, and Brooklyn Nets. Carroll formerly played for the University of Missouri and Vanderbilt University. He is the nephew of former Missouri and former Arkansas men's basketball coach Mike Anderson.

Marvin Williams

Marvin Gaye Williams Jr. (born June 19, 1986) is an American professional basketball player for the Charlotte Hornets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played one season of college basketball for North Carolina before being drafted second overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2005 NBA draft. After seven seasons with the Hawks, he was traded to the Utah Jazz. He spent two seasons with the Jazz before joining the Hornets in 2014.

Joe Meriweather

Joe C. Meriweather (born October 26, 1953 – October 13, 2013) was an American professional basketball player.
A 6'10" center from Southern Illinois University, Meriweather played ten seasons (1975–1985) in the NBA as a member of the Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks, New Orleans Jazz, New York Knicks, and Kansas City Kings.  He earned NBA All-Rookie honors in his first season, during which he averaged 10.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks.  Over the course of his NBA career, Meriweather averaged 8.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks.He played for the US national team in the 1974 FIBA World Championship, winning the bronze medal.Meriweather spent the 1985–86 basketball season playing for Granarolo Bologna in Italy.
He coached the Kansas City Mustangs of the Women's  Basketball Association professional league to an undefeated season in 1994. He also served as the head women's basketball coach at Park University in Parkville, Missouri from 1997 to 2010 before resigning in March 2010.Meriweather died on October 13, 2013 in Columbus, Georgia.

Sly Williams

Sylvester Williams (born January 26, 1958) is a retired American basketball player. Born in New Haven, Connecticut. In 1979 he was drafted 21st overall by the New York Knicks and he played parts of seven seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks and Boston Celtics, appearing in 305 regular season games and seven in the playoffs. In 1985 he signed for the Celtics, but was released on December 2 after a number of personal issues. The Celtics went on to win the 1986 NBA Finals in his absence. As a member of the Knicks, Williams was the last player to wear No. 33 before Patrick Ewing.Williams was highly recruited as an All American out of Lee High School in New Haven, Connecticut He averaged 31 points and 22 rebounds per game his senior year, leading his team to the Connecticut state title. He was highly recruited out of High School by schools such as the University of Rhode Island (URI), Providence College, University of Texas, University of Georgia, University of Connecticut and others. He verbally committed to Providence College and is credited with intensifying the rivalry between the URI and Providence College after signing  a letter of intent to attend URI the first day of his fall semester, when he was supposed to arrive at Providence. He spent his whole college career attending URI.
In August 2002 he pleaded guilty to kidnapping charges after allegedly holding a woman captive for about 24 hours and threatening her with a knife in September 2001, and raping a second woman in January 2002. The cases were consolidated and Williams was charged with first-degree rape, sodomy and first-degree kidnapping. He was sentenced to up to five years in prison. Williams was working for a pipe and plastics company at the time of his arrest.

Jack Nichols

Jack Edward Nichols (April 9, 1926 – December 24, 1992) was an American professional basketball player.
A 6'7" power forward who attended the University of Washington and the University of Southern California, Nichols played nine seasons (1948–1951;1952–1958) in the National Basketball Association as a member of the Washington Capitols, Tri-Cities Blackhawks, Milwaukee Hawks, and Boston Celtics.  He scored 5,245 points in his career and was a contributor to the Celtics' 1957 NBA championship team, who was coached by his former Washington Capitol coach, Red Aurabach.  During his last 3 years with the Celtics, he attended Tufts Dental School full-time, earning his doctor of dentistry in 1958.
During his collegiate career, Nichols was named an all-conference player in five different seasons, twice with USC, and three times at UW (only player ever to achieve this). In 1948 he set the single game (39 points vs. Idaho) and single season scoring records for the Pacific Coast Conference.  He was named a Helms Foundation All-American, and led the Huskies to the 1948 NCAA tournament by Beating Cal in a 3-game series.
Upon his retirement from professional basketball, Nichols served as the team dentist for the University of Washington and for the Seattle Sonics.  Nichols has been inducted into the University of Washington Hall of Fame, the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame, and the Pac-12 Conference Hall of Honor.

Shellie McMillon

Shellie McMillon, Jr. was an American professional basketball player. McMillon was selected in the 1958 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons after a collegiate career at Bradley University. He played for the Pistons and St. Louis Hawks during his four-year NBA career.

Ron Behagen

Ronald Michael Behagen (born January 19, 1951) is a retired American basketball player.
A 6'9" center from DeWitt Clinton High School in New York City, Behagen played basketball in junior college and at the University of Minnesota during the early 1970s. One of his teammates was future Baseball Hall-of-Famer Dave Winfield. After his college career ended in 1973, Behagen was drafted by the Kentucky Colonels in the 1973 American Basketball Association draft and by the Kansas City Kings in the first round of the 1973 NBA draft.Behagen played seven seasons of professional basketball in the NBA as a member of the Kansas City Kings, New Orleans Jazz, Atlanta Hawks, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers, Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks, and Washington Bullets and in Italy for Antonini Siena.  He received NBA All-Rookie Team honors in 1974.  In his NBA career, he averaged 10.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.

Ed Macauley

Charles Edward Macauley (March 22, 1928 – November 8, 2011) was a professional basketball player.  His playing nickname was "Easy Ed."Macauley spent his prep school days at St. Louis University High School, then went on to Saint Louis University, where his team won the NIT championship in 1948. He was named the AP Player of the Year in 1949.
Macauley played in the NBA with the St. Louis Bombers, Boston Celtics, and St. Louis Hawks. Macauley was named MVP of the first NBA All-Star Game (he played in the first seven), and was named to the NBA's All-NBA First Team three consecutive seasons. He was named to the All-NBA second team once, in 1953–54—the same season he led the league in field goal percentage. Macauley's trade (with Cliff Hagan) to St. Louis brought Bill Russell to the Celtics. In the two years he coached with the Hawks, he led them to an 89–48 record, with a 9–11 playoff record. After retiring, he became sports director of KTVI, then the ABC affiliate in his native St. Louis.
Macauley scored 11,234 points in ten NBA seasons and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1960. At age 32, he still holds the record for being the youngest male player to be admitted. His uniform number 22 was retired by the Celtics and he was also awarded a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame.In 1989 Macauley was ordained a deacon of the Catholic Church. With Father Francis Friedl, he coauthored the book Homilies Alive: Creating Homilies That Hit Home.He died on November 8, 2011, at his home in St. Louis, Missouri. He was 83.

Grant Long

Grant Andrew Long (born March 12, 1966) is a retired American professional basketball player. He played over 1,000 NBA games over a 15-year career.A 6'9" forward from Eastern Michigan University, Long was selected with the 33rd pick of the 1988 NBA Draft by the Miami Heat.  Long played six seasons for the Heat, earning a reputation for his aggressive defense and strong rebounding. After the first two games of the 1994-95 season, Long was traded to the Atlanta Hawks along with Steve Smith for Kevin Willis. Long played two separate stints with the Hawks (1994-1996) and (1998–99); he would also play for the Detroit Pistons, Vancouver / Memphis Grizzlies, and Boston Celtics, and he ended his NBA career in 2003 with 9,518 total points and 6,154 total rebounds.
Long had two relatives who were playing in the NBA during his tenure in the league: John Long, his uncle, and Terry Mills, his cousin. He and Mills were teammates on the Detroit Pistons during the 1996-97 season.
His brother is professional boxer Julius Long.
