Pete Maravich

A list of the best Atlanta Hawks of all time. The Atlanta Hawks began as the Buffalo Bison in 1946. After bouncing around and changing names a few times, before landing in St. Louis in 1955. Those years in St. Louis featured a number of the greatest players in Hawks history. Hall of Famer Bob Pettit was the star of those Hawks teams of the late '50s and the Hawks captured the franchise's only title in 1958 behind their all star forward.&nbsp;The team moved to Atlanta in 1968 where it has remained since. a handful of all stars and even Hall of Famers played for the Hawks during its time in Atlanta. However, despite having a number of great players, the Hawks have never advanced past the second round of the playoffs in the Atlanta era. Dominique Wilkins led some of the entertaining Atlanta teams in the 1980s. Wilkins is one of the most popular players in Hawks history, and one if its best. The high flying Wilkins was a prolific scorer and multiple time slam dunk champion. Doc Rivers, Tree Rollins and Spud Webb are other players who are considered some of the best Hawks ever and some of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/the-top-nba-players-of-all-time">best players of all time</a>. More recently, Joe Johnson, Al Horford and Josh Smith are all star players who have led the Hawks and are some of the best players of the past decade.This is the list of the best Atlanta Hawks of all time. Peter Press Maravich (June 22, 1947 – January 5, 1988), known by his nickname Pistol Pete, was an American professional basketball player. Maravich was born in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, and raised in the Carolinas.  Maravich starred in college at Louisiana State University (LSU) while playing for his father, head coach Press Maravich. He played for three NBA teams until injuries forced his retirement in 1980 following a ten-year career. He is the all-time leading  NCAA Division I scorer with 3,667 points scored and an average of 44.2 points per game. All of his accomplishments were achieved before the adoption of the three point line and shot clock, and despite being unable to play varsity as a freshman under then-NCAA rules.One of the youngest players ever inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Maravich was cited by the Hall as "perhaps the greatest creative offensive talent in history". In an April 2010 interview, Hall of Fame player John Havlicek said that "the best ball-handler of all time was Pete Maravich". Maravich died suddenly at age 40 during a pick-up game in 1988 as a consequence of a previously undetected heart defect.

Joe Johnson

Joseph Marcus Johnson (born June 29, 1981) is an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Tri-State Triplets of the BIG3 professional basketball league. He played high school basketball for Little Rock Central High School and college basketball for the Arkansas Razorbacks. After two years with Arkansas, he declared for the 2001 NBA draft where he was drafted 10th overall by the Boston Celtics. He is a seven-time NBA All-Star and has also played for the Phoenix Suns, Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Miami Heat and Utah Jazz, while having also represented the United States national team.

Kyle Korver

Kyle Elliot Korver (born March 17, 1981) is an American professional basketball player for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Creighton Bluejays and was drafted in the second round of the 2003 NBA draft by the New Jersey Nets. He was immediately traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. After four and a half seasons in Philadelphia, he was traded to the Utah Jazz. During his first stint with the Jazz, in 2009–10, Korver shot 53.6 percent from three-point range, which set an NBA single-season three-point field goal accuracy record. In 2010, he joined the Chicago Bulls. In 2012, he was traded to the Atlanta Hawks, where in 2015, he was named NBA All-Star. In 2017, he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he was a member of back-to-back Finals teams. In 2018, he was traded back to the Jazz. In 2019, he signed with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Lou Hudson

Louis Clyde Hudson ("Sweet Lou") (July 11, 1944 – April 11, 2014) was an American National Basketball Association (NBA) player, who was an All-American at the University of Minnesota and a six-time NBA All-Star, scoring 17,940 total points in 13 NBA seasons (1966–1979).

Steve Smith

Steven Delano Smith (born March 31, 1969) is an American retired basketball player who is currently a basketball analyst for Turner Sports. After a collegiate career with Michigan State, he played with several teams in his 14-season National Basketball Association career, including the Miami Heat, the Portland Trail Blazers and the San Antonio Spurs, but is perhaps best known for his five-year stint with the Atlanta Hawks which included an All-Star Game appearance in 1998. He won a championship with the Spurs in 2003.
Smith was widely regarded as an excellent three-point shooter, and is one of three players to make seven 3-pointers in a quarter.
He joined the USA men's national basketball team in the 1994 FIBA World Championship  winning the gold medal. He won another gold medal at the 1999 Tournament of the Americas and an Olympic gold medal with the USA men's national basketball team at the 2000 Summer Olympics with eleven other NBA All-Stars.

Jamal Crawford

Aaron Jamal Crawford (born March 20, 1980) is an American professional basketball player who  last played for the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played for  basketball powerhouse  Rainier Beach High School in Seattle and then the University of Michigan. He made his NBA debut in 2000 for the Chicago Bulls, who acquired him from the Cleveland Cavaliers on draft day. He would later play  for the New York Knicks, Golden State Warriors, Atlanta Hawks, Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Clippers, and Minnesota Timberwolves. Having earned NBA Sixth Man of the Year honors in 2010 and 2014 and again in 2016, Crawford is the first ever three-time winner of the award. He is the all-time NBA leader in four-point plays, with 55 or 60 counting the playoffs. As recently as April 9, 2019, Crawford (39 years, 20 days) became the oldest player to score 50+ points in a single game, and the first player to do so with four different teams. His 51-point tally is the most points ever scored by a player not in the starting lineup. In all NBA history, he ranks 27th in 50-point games accrued (between George Mikan and Larry Bird) and 7th in three-point field goals made (2,220). Crawford is also only the second player ever to score 10,000+ career points off the bench.



Stacey Augmon

Stacey Orlando Augmon (born August 1, 1968) is an American basketball coach and former player who is an assistant coach for player development for the Sacramento Kings.  He played professionally in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He gained the nickname "Plastic Man" due to his athletic ability to "stretch".  He was also an assistant coach at his alma mater UNLV under coach Dave Rice. He was previously the head coach of Jeonju KCC Egis of the Korean Basketball League.

Eddie Johnson

Edward Lee "Fast Eddie" Johnson Jr. (born February 24, 1955) is a retired American professional basketball player. A 6'2" guard from Auburn University, Johnson played 10 seasons (1977–1987) in the NBA, mainly as a member of the Atlanta Hawks. Eddie's younger brother Frank played and coached in the NBA, also being a guard.
He represented the Hawks in two NBA All-Star Games (1980 and 1981) and scored 10,163 points in his career. As a player, he was known for his great speed and slashing ability, with a capable outside shot. However, Johnson is known today for how his life spiraled out of control, beginning with his expulsion from the NBA.



Jason Terry

Jason Eugene Terry (born September 15, 1977) is an American professional basketball player who last played for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He plays at both guard positions and is nicknamed "the Jet". With the Dallas Mavericks, Terry won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award in 2009 and an NBA championship in 2011. Terry has made the fifth-most three-point field goals in NBA history.

Reggie Theus

Reginald Wayne Theus (born October 13, 1957) is an American retired basketball player and the former head coach of California State University, Northridge. He formerly served as head coach for the NBA's Sacramento Kings and New Mexico State University's men's basketball team. He was also an assistant coach for the University of Louisville under Rick Pitino.

Joe Caldwell

Joe Louis Caldwell (born November 1, 1941) is a retired American professional basketball player. Caldwell played six seasons (1964–1970) in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and five seasons (1970–1975) in the American Basketball Association (ABA). Caldwell was one of the few players to be an All-Star in both leagues, making 2 All-Star teams in each league. Caldwell was a member of the United States Olympic basketball team that won the gold medal in the 1964 Summer Olympics. Caldwell was Team USA's fourth leading scorer.

Johnny Davis

Johnny Reginald Davis (born October 21, 1955) is an American retired professional basketball player, and formerly an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played in the NBA with four teams in ten years from 1976 to 1986, winning an NBA championship in his rookie season (1976–77) with the Portland Trail Blazers. He also played for the Indiana Pacers, the Atlanta Hawks, and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
In 1996–97 NBA season Davis coached the Philadelphia 76ers, and he coached the Orlando Magic for nearly two seasons from 2003 to 2005. On June 21, 2007, he was named assistant coach by new Grizzlies head coach Marc Iavaroni. Davis had previously served as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, Portland Trail Blazers, New Jersey Nets, Orlando Magic, Minnesota Timberwolves, Indiana Pacers, Memphis Grizzlies, Toronto Raptors, and Los Angeles Lakers.
On January 22, 2009, Iavaroni was fired by Memphis GM Chris Wallace, and Davis was named interim head coach of the Grizzlies. On January 25, Lionel Hollins—Davis' teammate on the 1977 Portland team—was named Memphis' head coach, with Davis going back to his old job as an assistant coach. From 2011 to 2013, Davis worked as an assistant with the Toronto Raptors.

Stephen Jackson

Stephen Jesse Jackson (born April 5, 1978) is an American retired professional basketball player who played 14 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the New Jersey Nets, Indiana Pacers, Golden State Warriors, Milwaukee Bucks, Charlotte Bobcats, San Antonio Spurs, and Los Angeles Clippers. Jackson won an NBA championship with the Spurs in 2003.

Tony Delk

Tony Lorenzo Delk (born January 28, 1974) is an American former professional basketball player and former college assistant coach, most recently for the New Mexico State Aggies men's basketball team. He was team leader of the 1996 University of Kentucky Wildcats team that won the 1996 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship Game. After college, he played for eight NBA teams over ten seasons.

Isaiah Rider

Isaiah Rider Jr., nicknamed J.R. (born March 12, 1971), is an American former professional basketball player.
Rider was born in Oakland, California, and was raised in nearby Alameda. He starred in both baseball and basketball at Encinal High School before going on to a college career with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), and a professional career in the National Basketball Association.

Tim Hardaway, Jr.

Timothy Duane Hardaway Jr. (born March 16, 1992) is an American professional basketball player for the Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Michigan Wolverines and declared for the NBA draft after his junior season for the national runner-up 2012–13 team. Hardaway was selected with the 24th overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft by the New York Knicks. He has had two stints with the Knicks and has also played for the Atlanta Hawks. He is the son of former NBA All-Star Tim Hardaway.
As a freshman during the 2010–11 NCAA Division I men's basketball season, he earned four Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week awards, including three in the final four weeks during which he averaged over 20 points a game to help the 2010–11 team to climb up to fourth in the 2010–11 Big Ten Conference men's basketball season standings. He was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection and a unanimous Big Ten All-Freshman team selection following the season. He established the Michigan freshman record for single-season three-point shots made. He was a 2011 Collegeinsider.com Freshmen All-America selection and participated as a member of Team USA in the 2011 FIBA Under-19 World Championship.  As a sophomore for the 2011–12 team, he earned the 2011–12 All-Big Ten 3rd team recognition. He earned 2012–13 All-Big Ten (1st team: coaches and 2nd team: media) recognition.

Kevin Joseph Huerter (born August 27, 1998) is an American professional basketball player for the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Maryland Terrapins.

Marco Belinelli

Marco Stefano Belinelli (Italian pronunciation: [ˈmarko beliˈnɛlli]; born 25 March 1986) is an Italian professional basketball player for the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was selected 18th overall in the 2007 NBA draft by the Golden State Warriors. In 2014, he won the NBA championship with the San Antonio Spurs, becoming the first Italian player to do so. He won the NBA Three-Point Shootout during the 2014 NBA All-Star Weekend. He played in the 2007, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017 editions of the FIBA EuroBasket and the 2006 FIBA World Championship with the Italian national basketball team.

Max "Slats" Zaslofsky (December 7, 1925 – October 15, 1985) was an American professional basketball player and coach. He was First Team All-NBA four different seasons. In 1947–48, at 21 years of age he led the NBA in scoring, and in 1949–50 he led the league in free throw percentage (.843).

Tom Van Arsdale

Thomas Arthur Van Arsdale (born February 22, 1943) is a former professional basketball player.  A graduate of Indianapolis Emmerich Manual High School, the 6'5" guard played collegiately at Indiana University, Van Arsdale was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the 2nd round of the 1965 NBA draft.  He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team in 1966, together with his identical twin brother Dick Van Arsdale.  Van Arsdale played in the NBA for 12 seasons; with the Pistons, the Cincinnati Royals, the Kansas City–Omaha Kings, the Philadelphia 76ers, the Atlanta Hawks, and the Phoenix Suns.    Van Arsdale, a three-time All-Star, was consistently over his career one of the best free throw shooters in the NBA.  He retired from play in 1977.
Van Arsdale still holds the NBA record for most career games played without a playoff appearance.  Van Arsdale played 929 games without making a single playoff appearance.  Van Arsdale is also the highest scoring player (14,232 career points) in NBA history without a playoff appearance.
Born in Indianapolis, he is the identical twin of Dick Van Arsdale.  The two brothers played together during the 1976–77 season, which was the final year of play for both. The original lockers of both Tom and Dick remain in the display case in the lobby of the Emmerich Manual High School gymnasium.

James Jackson (born October 14, 1970) is an American retired professional basketball player. Over his 14 NBA seasons, Jackson was on the active roster of 12 different teams, tying the league record shared with Joe Smith, Tony Massenburg and Chucky Brown. He is currently a basketball analyst for Fox Sports 1, having previously worked for the Big Ten Network.

Mike Dunleavy, Jr.

Michael Joseph Dunleavy Jr. (born September 15, 1980) is an American former professional basketball player who is a pro scout for the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He previously played for the Golden State Warriors, Indiana Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers and Atlanta Hawks. He is the son of long-time NBA player and former NBA head coach Mike Dunleavy Sr.

Richie Guerin

Richard Vincent Guerin (born May 29, 1932) is an American retired professional basketball player and coach. He played with the National Basketball Association's (NBA) New York Knicks from 1956 to 1963 and was a player-coach of the St. Louis/Atlanta Hawks franchise where he spent nine years. On February 15, 2013, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced that Guerin had been elected as one of its 2013 inductees.He served in the Marine Corps Reserve from 1947 to 1954. While a reservist, Guerin attended Iona College from 1950 to 1954 where he scored 1,375 points in 67 games playing for coach Jim McDermott. After graduation, Guerin served on active duty at Marine Corps Schools, Quantico, Virginia for two years.The Knicks drafted Guerin with the 8th pick in the second round of the 1954 NBA draft while still on active duty. After leaving the Marine Corps, Guerin would begin his professional basketball career in 1956.As a high-scoring point guard in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Richie Guerin was one of the most talented and best-loved players ever to wear a New York Knicks jersey. His feisty on-court style and wisecracking off-court demeanor played well to Madison Square Garden crowds.Guerin was a machinelike scorer, a gifted passer, a smart playmaker, and one of the best rebounding and driving guards of his era. He led the Knicks in assists for five consecutive seasons and in scoring three times during his seven full seasons in the Big Apple, and he tallied more than 20 points per game in four consecutive years. The explosive Guerin also set Knicks single-game records for scoring, with 57 points in 1959, and assists, with 21 in 1958. His 57-point game stood as a Knicks record until Bernard King scored 60 on Christmas Day in 1984.
A fan and media favorite, Guerin played in six consecutive NBA All-Star Games. As a team, however, New York struggled, reaching the playoffs only once during Guerin's tenure. He was traded to the St. Louis Hawks midway through the 1963–64 season and spent the next eight years as the team's player-coach and then head coach. With St. Louis (and eventually Atlanta), Guerin played alongside such greats as Bob Pettit, Lou Hudson, Lenny Wilkens, and Cliff Hagan. Guerin helped the Hawks to nine consecutive playoff appearances and was named NBA Coach of the Year for 1967–68.
