Many people today may not realize that a lot of African Americans moved out west following Emancipation. There aren’t a ton of Black Western movies with a predominantly Black cast or Black protagonist. However, there are a few interesting ones. Here are the greatest Black Western films.

A few films probably come to mind when thinking about a list of Black western movies. Quentin Tarantino’s revisionist western Django Unchained starring Jamie Foxx as the titular character certainly tops any list of Black westerns. Additionally, Mel Brooks' satire Blazing Saddles, which takes aim at the blatant racism of the American frontier, features Cleavon Little as a black sheriff in a town full of white people.

But those are just two of the best Black Westerns. There are so many other noteworthy films that explore both the romanticism and the reality of moving out west from the African American perspective. Let us know what you think by voting up or down on your favorite Black western movies on this list.
