The best books for third graders include a lot of fantastical stories geared for kids ages 8, and many are classics. What are the best chapter books for 3rd graders? It does depend a great deal on a child's reading levels, because some kids might be ready for more advanced reading by grade three. This list includes a myriad of choices, from advanced chapter books like the 'Harry Potter' series and 'Bridge to Terabithia' to books for all ages. Vote for the third grade books you think are the most appropriate and/or enjoyable, and of course, please add any books that you think are perfect for this age.

Some favorite books for children in third grade include several in well-known chapter book series. Examples? The 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' series by Jeff Kinney might be a good choice for this age group (again, depending on reading level). The 'Judy Moody' series by Megan McDonald might appeal to both girls and boys (Judy Moody is, after all, a tomboy), and, for children who love fantasy books, 'The Chronicles of Prydain' by Lloyd Alexander might be exciting.

One thing is indisputable: Roald Dahl books are always a hit with kids this age. From 'The Witches' (a great read around Halloween) to 'James and the Giant Peach,' 'The BFG' and 'The Twits,' it's hard to go wrong choosing a Dahl book for a third grader. His characters are often loveable and always unforgettable. Dahl books are among the the greatest books to read to kids. The same goes for the Andrew Clements books, and almost anything by Beverly Cleary.

What was your favorite book in the third grade? The chances are, if you remember it now, it's worth pulling out and giving to another child. Some books, like 'The Indian in the Cupboard,' 'The Tale of Desperaux,' 'A Little Princess' and 'The Cricket in Times Square' will remain popular forever.
