Due to the success of the first game, an expanded budget allowed Gearbox to massively improve on the original game and make every aspect bigger and better. 2012's Borderlands 2 ups the pace of play and offers extensive weapon customization as well as more varied enemies. Even the world of Pandora was expanded upon, now appearing as a vibrant, bustling space instead of the barren desert of the original. Upon release the game received universal acclaim with critics praising the visuals, story, writing, gameplay, and online multiplayer mode. The game also spawned the popular recurring character Handsome Jack, modeled after the writer of the game, Anthony Burch. A perfect hybrid, the game includes elements such as a procedurally generated loot system, upgradeable skills, side quests, co-op gameplay, and much more. The story revolves around four vault hunters in the search for the Vault filled with alien loot on the planet of Pandora. Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is a spin-off offering a variety of new material in a new format inspired by fantasy-themed tabletop and Japanese role-playing games. A "game within a game", Tiny Tina acts as dungeon master, capable of changing the world of the game in an instant. Another fun change to the franchise is that players can now customize their own Fatebringer including mixing and matching character classes and skills, wielding melee weapons, and casting spells (instead of chucking grenades). On top of all that, the franchise's already iconic humor is given a boost by a stellar voice cast featuring Andy Samberg, Will Arnett, and Wanda Sykes with Ashly Burch returning as Tiny Tina.

The odd name of the third game in the franchise stems from its narrative events taking place between Borderlands and Borderlands 2. The game, released in 2014, centers around Jack leading a group of vault hunters on an expedition to one of Pandora's moons. Because of the space element, new gameplay mechanics such as low-gravity environments, freeze weapons, and oxygen tanks were introduced as well as new character classes. Additionally, a new "Grinder" machine allows players to deposit combinations of existing weapons to receive one of higher rarity and vehicles such as a moon buggy and hoverbike were also added. Because of the major involvement of 2K Australia, the moon's inhabitants are portrayed as essentially Australian, adding a diverse new layer to the humor and dialogue.
