Before the team moved to Brooklyn and the sparkling new Barclays Center in 2012 to become the coolest team in the league, the Nets weren't exactly on people's radars outside of the Garden State. Despite having some great players, the Nets were always in the shadow of the Tri-State area's big team: the New York Knicks. However, the Nets have had a number of superstars on its roster over the years. The team's early years were spent first in Teaneck, New Jersey as the New Jersey Americans and later Long Island as the New York Nets. The Nets, one of the ABA's charter franchises, were led by Hall of Famer Julius &quot;Dr. J&quot; Erving. One of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/top-10-small-forwards">greatest small forwards in basketball history</a>, Doc led the the Nets to two ABA titles before being traded to Philadelphia ahead of the team's move to the NBA.Despite small pockets of success, the Nets were perennial losers. Buck Williams

Charles Linwood Williams (born March 8, 1960) is an American retired professional basketball player and former assistant coach for the Portland Trail Blazers. He was well known for his rebounding ability and trademark goggles.
Williams, a 6 ft 8 in (2.03 m) forward born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, ranks 15th all-time in NBA career rebounds. His 17-year NBA career was highlighted by three All-Star Game appearances, a Rookie of the Year award, an All-Rookie team selection, an All-NBA second team selection and four selections to the first and second NBA All-Defensive teams. Buck Williams led the Nets in rebounding for most of the 1980s  and as of the beginning of 2017, he remains the Nets’ second all-time leader in points (10,440), total rebounds (7,576), games played (635), minutes played (23,100), rebounds per game (11.9), and free throws made (2,476).

Derrick Coleman

Derrick D. Coleman (born June 21, 1967) is an American retired basketball player. Coleman was born in Mobile, Alabama, but grew up and attended high school in Detroit, and attended college at Syracuse University. He was selected first overall in the 1990 NBA draft by the New Jersey Nets.
Throughout his career, the left-handed Coleman was an effective low post scorer, averaging 16.5 points and 9.3 rebounds. He enjoyed his best years as a member of the New Jersey Nets, where he averaged 19.8 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. When Coleman entered the NBA, he was compared to elite power forwards such as Karl Malone and Charles Barkley, and expected to put up similar numbers, only with the added ability to shoot from three-point range. Instead, his career was overshadowed by numerous injuries. Sports Illustrated once remarked that "Coleman could have been the best power forward ever; instead he played just well enough to ensure his next paycheck."His Syracuse jersey number, 44, was retired on March 5, 2006.
As of 2007, he was working as a developer and entrepreneur in Detroit. He has also appeared as an occasional studio analyst for NBA TV's "NBA Gametime Live" coverage.

Kenyon Martin

Kenyon Lee Martin (born December 30, 1977) is an American retired professional basketball player who played 15 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played for the New Jersey Nets, Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks and Milwaukee Bucks of the NBA, and the Xinjiang Flying Tigers of China. The 6'9" power forward played college basketball for Cincinnati before being drafted with the first overall pick in the 2000 NBA draft by the New Jersey Nets.

Cliff Robinson

Clifford Ralph Robinson (born December 16, 1966) is an American retired professional basketball player who played 18 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA).  Selected 36th overall in the 1989 draft, he played the first 8 seasons of his career with the Portland Trail Blazers, followed by stints with the Phoenix Suns, Detroit Pistons, Golden State Warriors, and New Jersey Nets.  Robinson received the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award in 1993 and was selected as an All-Star in 1994.  Robinson played college basketball at the University of Connecticut.

Thaddeus Young

Thaddeus Charles Young Sr. (born June 21, 1988) is an American professional basketball player for the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for Georgia Tech, before being drafted 12th overall in the 2007 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Kevin Garnett

Kevin Maurice Garnett (born May 19, 1976) is an American former professional basketball player who played for 21 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Known for his intensity, defensive ability, and versatility, Garnett is considered one of the greatest power forwards of all time. He is one of four NBA players to win both the Most Valuable Player and the Defensive Player of the Year awards. In high school, Garnett was a 1995 McDonald's All-American at Farragut Career Academy and won a national player of the year award. He entered the 1995 NBA draft, where he was selected with the fifth overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves and became the first NBA player drafted directly out of high school in 20 years.
Garnett made an immediate impact with the Minnesota Timberwolves, leading them to eight consecutive playoff appearances. In 2004, he led the Timberwolves to the Western Conference Finals and won the NBA MVP Award. Garnett has been named to 15 All-Star Games, winning the All-Star MVP award in 2003, and is currently tied for third-most All-Star selections in NBA history. He was named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2007–08, and has been selected nine times for All-NBA Teams and 12 times for All-Defensive Teams. Garnett also holds several Timberwolves franchise records.
In 2007, after 12 seasons with the Timberwolves, Garnett joined the Boston Celtics in a blockbuster trade. In his first year with the Celtics, he helped lead them to the NBA championship, while also finishing in third place for the MVP award. In 2013, Garnett was included in a second headline trade that sent him to the Brooklyn Nets with longtime Celtic Paul Pierce. In 2015, Garnett was traded back to Minnesota. He announced his retirement from professional basketball in September 2016.

Trevor Fitzgerald Booker (born November 25, 1987) is an American professional basketball player who last played for the Indiana Pacers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was drafted 23rd overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2010 NBA draft, but was immediately traded to the Washington Wizards. Booker primarily plays the power forward position.

Roy Hinson

Roy Hinson (born May 2, 1961) is a retired American professional basketball player who was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round (20th pick overall) of the 1983 NBA draft. Hinson attended Franklin High School in Franklin Township, New Jersey. He then played his college career at Rutgers University in nearby New Brunswick. A 6'9" forward–center, Hinson played in eight NBA seasons from 1983 to 1991, for the Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Nets.
Hinson's best year as a professional came during the 1985–86 season as a member of the Cavaliers, appearing in 82 games and averaging 19.6 points per game. He also participated in the 1986 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, finishing seventh out of eight contestants. In his NBA career, Hinson played in 507 games and scored a total of 7,206 points.
After his successful 1986 season he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers for the Number 1 overall pick in the 1986 draft which became Brad Daugherty. He was never again able to reach the same height he had in Cleveland, later going to the Nets and then retiring.

Larry Kenon

Larry Joe Kenon (born December 13, 1952) is an American former professional basketball player.
A 6'9" forward who had a productive career in both the American Basketball Association (ABA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA), Kenon played for the New York Nets, San Antonio Spurs, Chicago Bulls, Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers. His nicknames were "Mr. K" (to go with Nets teammate "Dr. J.", Julius Erving) and "Special K."

Maurice Lucas

Maurice Lucas (February 18, 1952 – October 31, 2010) was an American professional basketball player. The first two years of his postcollegiate career were spent in the American Basketball Association (ABA) with the Spirits of St. Louis and Kentucky Colonels. He then played twelve seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the Portland Trail Blazers, New Jersey Nets, New York Knickerbockers, Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers and Seattle SuperSonics. The starting power forward on the Trail Blazers' 1976–77 NBA Championship team, he was nicknamed The Enforcer because of his primary role on the court which was best exemplified in Game 2 of the NBA Finals that season.

Randolph Mahaffey

Randolph "Randy" Mahaffey (born September 28, 1945) is an American former professional basketball player.
A 6'7" forward born in LaGrange, Georgia, Mahaffey played college basketball at Clemson University. Mahaffey was one of four brothers (Don, Ronnie and Richie are the others) who played for Clemson between 1959 and 1970. They marked the first time in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) history that four brothers played for the same program.The Los Angeles Lakers selected him with the fourth pick of the second round of the 1967 NBA Draft (16th overall pick) and the Kentucky Colonels of the American Basketball Association also drafted him.  Mahaffey signed with the American Basketball Association's Colonels.
In his rookie season with the Colonels, Mahaffey scored over 1,000 points and was an ABA All-Star.
On December 30, 1968, the Colonels traded Mahaffey and Manny Leaks to the New York Nets for Oliver Darden and Andy Anderson.
On June 12, 1969 the Nets traded Mahaffey to the Carolina Cougars in return for a draft pick. Mahaffey played with the Cougars through the 1971-72 season.
Mahaffey appeared in the 1968 ABA Playoffs with the Colonels and in the 1970 ABA Playoffs with the Cougars.  He averaged 13 points a game in the 1968 playoffs and 12 points a game in the 1970 playoffs, but both of his teams exited after the first round.  The Colonels were edged 3 games to 2 by the Minnesota Muskies in the 1968 Eastern Division Semifinals and the Cougars were ousted in the 1970 Eastern Division Semifinals by the Indiana Pacers, 4 games to 0.
Mahaffey averaged 11.9 points per game and 8.0 rebounds per game in his professional basketball career.

Kevin Durant

Kevin Wayne Durant (born September 29, 1988) is an American professional basketball player for the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played one season of college basketball for the University of Texas, and was selected as the second overall pick by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 2007 NBA draft. He played nine seasons with the franchise, which became the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2008, before signing with the Golden State  Warriors in 2016, winning back-to-back championships in 2017 and 2018.
Durant was a heavily recruited high school prospect who was widely regarded as the second-best player in his class. In college, he won numerous year-end awards and became the first freshman to be named Naismith College Player of the Year. As a professional, he has won two NBA championships, an NBA Most Valuable Player Award, two Finals MVP Awards, two NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Awards, four NBA scoring titles, the NBA Rookie of the Year Award, and two Olympic gold medals. Durant has also been selected to nine All-NBA teams and ten NBA All-Star teams.
Off the court, Durant is one of the highest-earning basketball players in the world, due in part to endorsement deals with companies such as Foot Locker and Nike. He has developed a reputation for philanthropy and regularly leads the league in All-Star votes and jersey sales. In recent years, he has contributed to The Players' Tribune as both a photographer and writer. In 2012, he ventured into acting, appearing in the film Thunderstruck.

Chris Gatling

Chris Raymond Gatling (born September 3, 1967) is a retired American professional basketball player born in Elizabeth, New Jersey.  Gatling played for many National Basketball Association (NBA) teams from 1991 to 2002. He played for the US national team in the 1990 FIBA World Championship, winning the bronze medal.



Armen Gilliam

Armen Louis Gilliam (May 28, 1964 – July 5, 2011) was an American professional basketball player who played 13 years in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1987 to 2000. He also played one season (2005–06) for the Pittsburgh Xplosion of the American Basketball Association.  Gilliam returned to the court after retirement as the head basketball coach for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III  Penn State Altoona Lions from 2002 to 2005.



Calvin Natt

Calvin Leon Natt (born January 8, 1957) is a retired American professional basketball player.  A 6'6" (1.98 m) forward, Natt played at Northeast Louisiana University under coach Lenny Fant. After college, he played 11 NBA seasons (1979–1990), spending time with the New Jersey Nets, Portland Trail Blazers, Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, and Indiana Pacers.  He represented the Nuggets in the 1985 NBA All-Star Game, and retired with 10,291 career points. He is the older brother of former NBA player Kenny Natt.  Natt's nickname was "Pit Bull".Calvin Natt later became an ordained minister. He owns a funeral home in Denver, Colorado.

Bob Love

Robert Earl "Butterbean" Love (born December 8, 1942) is an American retired professional basketball player who spent the prime of his career with the National Basketball Association's Chicago Bulls. A versatile forward who could shoot with either his left or right hand, Love now works as the Bulls' Director of Community Affairs.

Mike Bantom

Michael Allen Bantom (born December 3, 1951) is an American former professional basketball player.
A 6'9" power forward/center from Saint Joseph's University, Bantom won a silver medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics as a member of the United States national basketball team, who lost a controversial final game to the Soviet Union.  He was selected by the Phoenix Suns with the eighth pick of the 1973 NBA draft, and he embarked upon a nine-year NBA (1973–82) career as a member of the Suns, Seattle SuperSonics, New York Nets, Indiana Pacers, and Philadelphia 76ers.  He earned All-Rookie Team honors and ended his NBA career with 8,568 total points, 4,517 total rebounds, and 1,623 total assists.  From 1982 until 1989, Bantom played professionally in Italy.
Since retiring as a player, Bantom has served as the licensing manager for NBA International, the NBA International director of marketing, the NBA senior vice president of player development, and the executive vice president of referee operations.Bantom is a father of four children, three daughters and a son.

Ollie Darden

Oliver M. "Ollie" Darden (born July 28, 1944 in Aberdeen, Mississippi) is a retired American professional basketball player.
A 6'7" forward/center from the University of Michigan. He was a 3-year starter along with Cazzie Russell, in what is claimed to be the "greatest basketball era at Michigan."  They won or shared the Big Ten title each year. In the sophomore year, they advanced in the NCAA tournament, eventually losing to Duke in the Final Four. The junior year they lost the NCAA final game 91-80 to UCLA. The senior year, they advanced to the regional final, losing to Kentucky and Adolph Rupp, a season in which Oliver was team captain.
Darden played in the American Basketball Association from 1967 to 1970 as a member of the Indiana Pacers, New York Nets, and Kentucky Colonels. He was drafted in 1966 with the 2nd pick in the 3rd round (22nd overall) by the NBA's Detroit Pistons, but never played for them.

Yi Jianlian

Yi Jianlian (simplified Chinese: 易建联; traditional Chinese: 易建聯; pinyin: Yì Jiànlián [î tɕjɛ̂nljɛ̌n]; born October 27, 1984) is a Chinese professional basketball player for the Guangdong Southern Tigers of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). He has also played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Milwaukee Bucks, New Jersey Nets, Washington Wizards and Dallas Mavericks.
Yi joined the Guangdong Southern Tigers for the 2002–03 CBA season, and subsequently won the CBA Rookie of the Year award. In his first five years with Guangdong, the team won three CBA titles. In the 2007 NBA draft, he was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks with the sixth overall pick. Initially, Yi declined to sign with Milwaukee for several months before agreeing to a contract with them on 29 August 2007. He later played for three other NBA teams until returning to the Guangdong Southern Tigers in 2012.
Yi also plays for the Chinese national team, having represented his country at the Olympics in 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016, as well as the 2006 and 2010 FIBA World Championships.

Purvis Short

Purvis Short (born July 2, 1957) is a retired American professional basketball player who played with the Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets and New Jersey Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1978 to 1990. A 6'7" small forward, Short averaged 17.3 points per game over his twelve-season career in the NBA. He is currently the Warriors seventh all-time leading scorer.After a brilliant career at Jackson State, Short was selected fifth overall in the 1978 NBA draft. Short was affectionately nicknamed "Rainbowman" because of the distinctive rainbow-like high arc of his jump shots, something he stated he obtained in high school. He was a role player and sixth man his first few years in the league. Short was a starter by the 1984–85 season, and scored a career high 59 points in a game against the New Jersey Nets in 1984. After leaving the NBA, he played one year of basketball in Israel, and is currently the director of the NBA Players Association's Department of Player Programs.

Howard Porter

Howard Porter (August 31, 1948 – May 26, 2007) was an American professional basketball player.  At 6'8" and 220 pounds, he played as a forward and a center.

Darnell Hillman

Darnell "Dr. Dunk" Hillman (born August 29, 1949) is a former professional basketball player.
Hillman graduated from Hiram W. Johnson High School.
The 6 ft 9 in (2.06 m) forward played college basketball at San Jose State University. Hillman was selected in the first round of the 1971 NBA draft (the 8th pick overall) by the Golden State Warriors, but opted instead to play for the Indiana Pacers of the American Basketball Association.Hillman played six seasons for the Pacers, who joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the ABA–NBA merger in June 1976. Hillman earned a reputation for his stylish slam dunks and oversized afro hairstyle. He would even be named the winner of the NBA's Slam Dunk Contest in the 1976–77 season, which was a precursor to the event that's known today, although he wouldn't be give an official trophy for it until March 8, 2017 In the final of that contest, which took place at halftime of Game 5 of the 1977 NBA Finals Hillman defeated Larry McNeill of the Golden State Warriors.  At the time of the final, Hillman's rights had been traded to the New York Nets, but he had not yet signed a contract. Since he was not officially a member of any NBA team, instead of wearing a jersey, he competed in a plain white tank top. Then for the post-competition interview, Hillman donned a shirt with the words "Bottle Shoppe" – the name of an Indianapolis liquor store, which is still in existence, and was the sponsor of a city parks softball league team for which Hillman played left field (and the only team he was a member of at the time).Hillman later played with the New Jersey Nets, Denver Nuggets, Kansas City Kings, and Golden State Warriors in the NBA, and he ended his career in 1980 with combined NBA/ABA totals of 6,666 points and 5,187 rebounds during the regular season, and 7,339 points and 5,809 rebounds including the post-season.
Hillman also played for the United States men's national basketball team at the 1970 FIBA World Championship.Hillman was once asked by a reporter if it was true he could jump high enough to grab a quarter off the top of the backboard. Hillman responded, "Put a $100 bill up there and see." The reporter, who had heard the stories of Hillman picking quarters off the top of backboards, turned down the offer.
At the 1997 ABA reunion, Hillman won the "Biggest ABA Afro" Award.Currently, Hillman serves as Associate Director of Camps, Clinics & Alumni Relations for the Indiana Pacers.
On February 4, 2012, Hillman's #45 was retired by San Jose State University. Hillman joins Ricky Berry (#34) and Olivier Saint-Jean (#3) as the only Spartans to have their jerseys retired.

Jim Chones

James Bernett “Bunny” Chones (born  November 30, 1949) is an American former professional basketball player, and current radio analyst for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
A 6'11" forward/center, Chones starred at Marquette University, where he earned All-America honors as a junior in 1972 after averaging 20.5 points and 11.9 rebounds per game.  When he left Marquette to pursue an ABA career, he was only the second player in NCAA history to leave school for professional basketball before his graduating year.  The New York Nets offered him a sizeable contract, and stipulated that he must accept within days and leave college.  As a result, he left Marquette in February 1972 with his college team undefeated and ranked second in the nation.  After Chones' departure Marquette finished the season at 25-4.
Professionally, he first played in the American Basketball Association (ABA) with the New York Nets, with whom he was an ABA All-Rookie First Team selection. He also spent a season with the Carolina Cougars. In 1975, he moved to the National Basketball Association, where he played five seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and later won an NBA Championship as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers in 1980. He retired from basketball in 1982 with combined ABA/NBA totals of 9,821 points and 6,427 rebounds.After retiring from the NBA, Chones spent eleven seasons as the television color analyst for the Cleveland Cavaliers, and in 2007, returned as a radio postgame analyst.
During the 2010–2011 season, usual Cavs radio voice Joe Tait missed much of the season as he recovered from surgery/illness. During that time,  Chones and WTAM morning co-host/sports director and Cavs pregame/postgame host Mike Snyder formed the interim radio play by play team.  Chones became a full-time member of the radio team in the 2011–2012 season, working with new play by play announcer John Michael.

Andray Blatche

Andray Maurice Blatche (born August 22, 1986) is an American-Filipino professional basketball player for the Tianjin Gold Lions of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). He played high school basketball at Henninger High School and South Kent School before he was drafted in the second round of the 2005 NBA draft by the Washington Wizards.
Born in New York and an American by birth, Blatche became a naturalized citizen of the Philippines in June 2014, enabling him to join the country's national basketball team.
