Despite having some great players, the Nets were always in the shadow of the Tri-State area's big team: the New York Knicks. However, the Nets have had a number of superstars on its roster over the years. The team's early years were spent first in Teaneck, New Jersey as the New Jersey Americans and later Long Island as the New York Nets. The Nets, one of the ABA's charter franchises, were led by Hall of Famer Julius &quot;Dr. J&quot; Erving. One of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/top-10-small-forwards">greatest small forwards in basketball history</a>, Doc led the the Nets to two ABA titles before being traded to Philadelphia ahead of the team's move to the NBA.Despite small pockets of success, the Nets were perennial losers. Even when they weren't, bad luck often did them in. But when Jason Kidd was acquired before the 2001-02 season, things changed. Kidd, one of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/greatest-point-guards-in-nba-history">best point guards in NBA history</a>, led the Nets to consecutive NBA Finals appearances in his first two seasons and led the best period in team history since the Dr. J years.When the team moved to Brooklyn, something that was long in the works, the Nets loaded up on stars to try to take over the NBA. With young talent like Brook Lopez, veterans like Deron Williams and Joe Johnson, and Hall of Famers like Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, the Nets seemed poised to challenge for a championship soon. Vince Carter

Vincent Lamar Carter (born January 26, 1977) is an American professional basketball player for the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is 6 feet 6 inches (1.98 m) tall and plays both shooting guard and small forward. Carter is one of five players that have played an NBA-record 21 seasons. He is widely regarded as the greatest dunker of all time.A high school McDonald's All-American, Carter played three years at the University of North Carolina. While there, he twice reached the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament before being selected as the fifth overall pick in the 1998 NBA draft by the Golden State Warriors, who traded him to the Toronto Raptors. 
Carter emerged as a star in Toronto. He won the 1999 NBA Rookie of the Year Award and won the Slam Dunk Contest at the 2000 NBA All-Star Weekend. That summer, he represented the United States in the Summer Olympics, winning a gold medal. He entertained crowds with his leaping ability and slam dunks, earning nicknames such as "Vinsanity", "Air Canada", and "Half-Man, Half-Amazing". In December 2004, Carter was traded to the New Jersey Nets, where he continued to put up big numbers. Carter has also played for the Orlando Magic, the Phoenix Suns, the Dallas Mavericks, the Memphis Grizzlies, the Sacramento Kings, and the Atlanta Hawks. He received the Twyman–Stokes Teammate of the Year Award in 2016. Carter is an eight-time NBA All-Star.
Off the court, Carter established the Embassy of Hope Foundation, assisting children and their families in Florida, New Jersey and Ontario. He was also recognized in 2000 as Child Advocate of the Year by the Children's Home Society, and received the Florida Governor's Points of Light award in 2007 for his philanthropy in his home state.

Drazen Petrovic

Joe Johnson

Joseph Marcus Johnson (born June 29, 1981) is an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Tri-State Triplets of the BIG3 professional basketball league. He played high school basketball for Little Rock Central High School and college basketball for the Arkansas Razorbacks. After two years with Arkansas, he declared for the 2001 NBA draft where he was drafted 10th overall by the Boston Celtics. He is a seven-time NBA All-Star and has also played for the Phoenix Suns, Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Miami Heat and Utah Jazz, while having also represented the United States national team.

Mike Newlin

Michael F. "Mike" Newlin (born January 2, 1949) is a retired American basketball player in the NBA.  A feisty 6'4" (1.93 m), 200 lb (91 kg) guard from the University of Utah, he played 11 professional seasons (1971–1982), spending most of his time with the Houston Rockets. He played in several playoff series, including the 1977 Eastern Conference Finals, which the Rockets would lose to the Philadelphia 76ers led by Julius Erving. He also played for the New Jersey Nets and New York Knicks.  He had his finest season in 1980–81, when he averaged 21.4 points per game for the Nets, and he retired in 1982 with 12,507 career points.

John Williamson

Micheal Ray Richardson

Micheal "Sugar" Ray Richardson (born April 11, 1955) is an American former professional basketball player and head coach. He most recently was head coach of London Lightning of the National Basketball League of Canada. Richardson played college basketball for the Montana Grizzlies. The No. 4 overall pick in the 1978 NBA draft, Richardson played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for eight years, for the New York Knicks, Golden State Warriors and New Jersey Nets. Richardson was a four-time NBA All-Star.



Kerry Kittles

Kerry Kittles (born June 12, 1974) is an American former professional basketball player who last played with the Los Angeles Clippers in the National Basketball Association in 2004–05. He was raised in New Orleans and attended St. Augustine High School. He is currently an assistant coach at Princeton.The 6' 5", 179 lb (81 kg) shooting guard attended Villanova University and was later selected by the New Jersey Nets with the eighth pick in the 1996 NBA draft. He sat out his entire fifth season, in 2000–01, due to rehabilitation from offseason surgery on his right knee. After seven seasons with the Nets, Kittles was traded to the Clippers in a salary purge.  After one injury-riddled year in Los Angeles, Kittles retired from the NBA.  Kittles completed an MBA at Villanova University's School of Business.He holds the Villanova University record for most points scored, with 2,243. Kittles is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.

Joe Harris

Joseph Malcolm Harris (born September 6, 1991) is an American professional basketball player for the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the University of Virginia before being selected with the 33rd overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. On February 11, 2019, he scored 24 points and made a career-best seven 3-pointers in a 127–125 loss to the Toronto Raptors. On February 16, he won the NBA Three-Point Contest during All-Star weekend. In the playoffs, he shot 4-of-21 from 3-point range over five games.

Gerald Green

Gerald Green (born January 26, 1986) is an American professional basketball player for the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was drafted by the Boston Celtics with the 18th overall pick in the 2005 NBA draft. Known for his dunking skill, he has performed well in many slam dunk competitions, having won the 2005 McDonald's All-American Slam Dunk Contest and the 2007 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, while finishing as the runner-up in the 2008 NBA Slam Dunk Contest.

Dennis Hopson

Dennis Hopson (born April 22, 1965) is a retired American professional basketball player and until the end of the 2013-14 season was an assistant coach at Bowling Green State University. A prolific scorer while playing at Ohio State University, Hopson's stellar shooting skills placed him in second for the NCAA Men's Basketball Division I scoring title during the 1986–87 season and eventually in first on Ohio State's all-time men's basketball career points record.  The All-American and 1987 Big Ten Conference Player of the Year was selected as the third overall pick in the 1987 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets, playing a total of five seasons in the league.  Hopson spent the majority of the 1990s playing basketball overseas before retiring at the close of the decade.

Otis Birdsong

Otis Lee Birdsong (born December 9, 1955) is an American former professional basketball player. He spent twelve seasons (1977–1989) in the NBA and appeared in four NBA All-Star Games.A 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m) guard who attended Winter Haven High School and the University of Houston, Birdsong was selected by the Kansas City Kings with the second pick of the 1977 NBA draft. He would spend four seasons with the Kings, averaging a career high 24.6 points per game during the 1980–81 season. He also played seven seasons with the New Jersey Nets and one with the Boston Celtics, and then ended his career at the end of the 1988–89 season.

Sean Kilpatrick

Sean Redell Kilpatrick (born January 6, 1990) is an American professional basketball player for Budućnost of the Adriatic League and the EuroCup. A 6'4" shooting guard born in Yonkers, New York, during his senior season of 2013–14 with the Cincinnati Bearcats, he was named AP first-team All-American.

Kendall Gill

Kendall Cedric Gill (born May 25, 1968) is an American retired professional basketball player who now works as a television basketball analyst. During his professional career he played for seven NBA teams including the Charlotte Hornets, the Seattle Supersonics, the Miami Heat and several others. He has offered pre- and post-game coverage of the Chicago Bulls for the local Comcast affiliate.

Paul Pierce

Paul Anthony Pierce (born October 13, 1977) is an American former professional basketball player who played 19 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is currently an analyst on ESPN's NBA Countdown.
Pierce was a high school McDonald's All-American and earned consensus first-team All-America honors in his junior year at Kansas. After being chosen by the Boston Celtics with the 10th overall pick in the 1998 NBA draft, Pierce spent the first 15 years of his career with Boston. Pierce's nickname, "The Truth", was given to him by Shaquille O'Neal in March 2001. He starred as captain of the Celtics, earning 10 All-Star selections and becoming a four-time All-NBA team member. Pierce combined with Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen in 2007 to form a "Big Three" that led Boston to two NBA Finals and an NBA championship in 2008. Pierce was named NBA Finals Most Valuable Player in 2008. Along with Larry Bird and John Havlicek, Pierce is one of only three players to have scored more than 20,000 career points with the Celtics. 
In July 2013, Pierce was traded to the Brooklyn Nets along with teammates Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry. He signed with the Washington Wizards as a free agent in 2014. After one season with the Wizards, Pierce reunited with former Celtics coach Doc Rivers and signed with the Clippers. He spent two seasons with the Clippers before retiring in 2017. On July 17, 2017, the Celtics signed Pierce to a contract, enabling him to retire as a member of the organization with which he spent his first 15 NBA seasons.

Chris Morris

Christopher Vernard Morris (born January 20, 1966) is a retired American professional basketball player. In his 11-season (1988–1999) National Basketball Association career, the 6'8" small forward played for the New Jersey Nets, Utah Jazz, and Phoenix Suns. He is a graduate of Atlanta's Douglass High School where his jersey has been retired and played for the Auburn University Tigers. He scored 8,184 total points in his NBA career.

Devin Harris

Devin Lamar Harris (born February 27, 1983) is an American professional basketball player who last played for the Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Harris attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Harris was selected with the fifth pick in the 2004 NBA draft by the Washington Wizards.

Ray Williams

Thomas Ray Williams (October 14, 1954 – March 22, 2013) was an American professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association from 1977 to 1987. Born in Mount Vernon, New York, he was the younger brother of Gus Williams, who also played in the NBA.

Reggie Theus

Reginald Wayne Theus (born October 13, 1957) is an American retired basketball player and the former head coach of California State University, Northridge. He formerly served as head coach for the NBA's Sacramento Kings and New Mexico State University's men's basketball team. He was also an assistant coach for the University of Louisville under Rick Pitino.

Art Heyman

Arthur Bruce Heyman (June 24, 1941 – August 27, 2012) was an American professional basketball player. Playing for Duke University in college, in 1963 he was USBWA Player of the Year, AP Player of the Year, UPI Player of the Year, Sporting News Player of the Year, Helms Foundation College Player of the Year, a consensus first-team All-American, ACC Player of the Year, and ACC Athlete of the Year. That year he was the first overall pick in the first round of the 1963 NBA draft.  He went on to have a 310-game professional career in the NBA and ABA.



Robert Hawkins

Robert Hawkins nicknamed "Bubbles" was an NBA basketball player. He was drafted with the fifteenth pick in the third round of the 1975 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors. Hawkins played with four different teams in four NBA seasons while averaging 12.7 points per game, 1.5 assists per game and 2.3 rebounds per game.

John Roche

John Michael Roche (born September 26, 1949) is a retired American professional basketball player in both the American Basketball Association (ABA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA). The 6'3" (1.90 m), 170 lb (77 kg) guard's career spanned from 1971 to 1982.
Roche attended high school at La Salle Academy and received his B.S. degree in business administration from the  University of South Carolina in 1971. While at the University of South Carolina, he was twice named the ACC basketball Player of the Year and was second in the voting in his other varsity year. He was a consensus All-American and Academic All-American basketball player in 1970 and 1971. He was named the 20th best player in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference on its 50-year anniversary team.
After graduation, he was selected by the Phoenix Suns in the first round (14th pick) of the 1971 NBA draft and also selected by the Kentucky Colonels in the 1971 ABA Draft. Roche signed with the New York Nets of the ABA, who had obtained the rights to him from the Colonels. He was selected to the 1972 ABA All-Rookie team, and played with the Nets during his first three seasons. During the 1973–74 season, he was traded back to Colonels for Mike Gale and Wendell Ladner. Roche is the first in NBA history to hit 7 three-point field goals in a single quarter. He played professional basketball for nine years, including three years for the Denver Nuggets. During the time he played professional basketball, he received his J.D. (1981) from the University of Denver College of Law. He is the only person who played in the NBA as a licensed lawyer.
Roche is currently an attorney at the Denver office of the law firm Taylor|Anderson. He practiced at Davis, Graham and Stubbs for eighteen years and Snell & Wilmer for nine years before joining Taylor|Anderson in 2009. He is admitted to practice in the State of Colorado, the United States District Court for the District of Colorado and the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, and he is a member of the Colorado and Denver Bar Associations.   Roche has also taught Remedies as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law.
Roche is a member of the New York City, LaSalle Academy, University of South Carolina and the State of South Carolina Halls of Fame. He is a nine time singles champion of the Denver City Open tennis tournament in his various age groups and a recipient of the Sam & Sid Milstein Award as "outstanding senior male tennis player" for the year 2014 in the Intermountain Colorado region. Roche is also an avid yoga practitioner.

Purvis Short

Purvis Short (born July 2, 1957) is a retired American professional basketball player who played with the Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets and New Jersey Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1978 to 1990. A 6'7" small forward, Short averaged 17.3 points per game over his twelve-season career in the NBA. He is currently the Warriors seventh all-time leading scorer.After a brilliant career at Jackson State, Short was selected fifth overall in the 1978 NBA draft. Short was affectionately nicknamed "Rainbowman" because of the distinctive rainbow-like high arc of his jump shots, something he stated he obtained in high school. He was a role player and sixth man his first few years in the league. Short was a starter by the 1984–85 season, and scored a career high 59 points in a game against the New Jersey Nets in 1984. After leaving the NBA, he played one year of basketball in Israel, and is currently the director of the NBA Players Association's Department of Player Programs.

Eric Money

Eric V. Money (born February 6, 1955) is a former American professional basketball player born in Detroit, Michigan.
A 6' 0" guard from the University of Arizona, Money played six seasons (from 1974 to 1980) in the National Basketball Association as a member of the Detroit Pistons, New Jersey Nets, and Philadelphia 76ers. He averaged 12.2 points per game in his NBA career.
He is the one of three players in NBA history to have played for two teams in a single game, and the only player in NBA history to officially score for two teams in the same game. This happened because of mistakes by referee Richie Powers and a subsequent replay of the game in question between the Nets and 76ers. In time between the NBA approving the Nets' protest of the game and the game being replayed, Money, Harvey Catchings, and Ralph Simpson swapped teams. (Al Skinner was also traded, but did not see playing time for either squad, making him the only player in NBA history to have an official DNP for both teams in the same NBA game.)
Money was one of several professional basketball players to appear in the 1979 film The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh.
