The team's early years were spent first in Teaneck, New Jersey as the New Jersey Americans and later Long Island as the New York Nets. Julius Erving

Julius Winfield Erving II (born February 22, 1950), commonly known by the nickname Dr. J, is an American retired basketball player who helped popularize a modern style of play that emphasizes leaping and playing above the rim.  Erving helped legitimize the American Basketball Association (ABA) and was the best-known player in that league when it merged with the National Basketball Association (NBA) after the 1975–76 season. 
Erving won three championships, four Most Valuable Player Awards, and three scoring titles with the ABA's Virginia Squires and New York Nets (now the NBA's Brooklyn Nets) and the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers.  He is the eighth-highest scorer in ABA/NBA history with 30,026 points (NBA and ABA combined).  He was well known for slam dunking from the free throw line in slam dunk contests and was the only player voted Most Valuable Player in both the ABA and the NBA.
Erving was inducted in 1993 into the Basketball Hall of Fame and was also named to the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time team. In 1994, Erving was named by Sports Illustrated as one of the 40 most important athletes of all time. In 2004, he was inducted into the Nassau County Sports Hall of Fame.
Many consider him one of the most talented players in the history of the NBA; he is widely acknowledged as one of the game's best dunkers. While Connie Hawkins, "Jumping" Johnny Green, Elgin Baylor, Jim Pollard and Gus Johnson performed spectacular dunks before Erving's time, Erving brought the practice into the mainstream. His signature dunk was the "slam" dunk, since incorporated into the vernacular and basic skill set of the game in the same manner as the "crossover" dribble and the "no look" pass. Before Erving, dunking was a practice most commonly used by the big men (usually standing close to the hoop) to show their brutal strength which was seen as style over substance, even unsportsmanlike, by many purists of the game. However, the way Erving utilized the dunk more as a high-percentage shot made at the end of maneuvers generally starting well away from the basket and not necessarily a "show of force" helped to make the shot an acceptable strategy, especially in trying to avoid a blocked shot. Although the slam dunk is still widely used as a show of power, a method of intimidation and a way to fire up a team (and spectators), Erving demonstrated that there can be great artistry and almost balletic style to slamming the ball into the hoop, particularly after a launch several feet from that target.

Vince Carter

Vincent Lamar Carter (born January 26, 1977) is an American professional basketball player for the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is 6 feet 6 inches (1.98 m) tall and plays both shooting guard and small forward. Carter is one of five players that have played an NBA-record 21 seasons. He is widely regarded as the greatest dunker of all time.A high school McDonald's All-American, Carter played three years at the University of North Carolina. While there, he twice reached the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament before being selected as the fifth overall pick in the 1998 NBA draft by the Golden State Warriors, who traded him to the Toronto Raptors. 
Carter emerged as a star in Toronto. He won the 1999 NBA Rookie of the Year Award and won the Slam Dunk Contest at the 2000 NBA All-Star Weekend. That summer, he represented the United States in the Summer Olympics, winning a gold medal. He entertained crowds with his leaping ability and slam dunks, earning nicknames such as "Vinsanity", "Air Canada", and "Half-Man, Half-Amazing". In December 2004, Carter was traded to the New Jersey Nets, where he continued to put up big numbers. Carter has also played for the Orlando Magic, the Phoenix Suns, the Dallas Mavericks, the Memphis Grizzlies, the Sacramento Kings, and the Atlanta Hawks. He received the Twyman–Stokes Teammate of the Year Award in 2016. Carter is an eight-time NBA All-Star.
Off the court, Carter established the Embassy of Hope Foundation, assisting children and their families in Florida, New Jersey and Ontario. He was also recognized in 2000 as Child Advocate of the Year by the Children's Home Society, and received the Florida Governor's Points of Light award in 2007 for his philanthropy in his home state.

Richard Jefferson

Richard Allen Jefferson (born June 21, 1980) is an American professional basketball player who is currently a free agent. He played college basketball with the Arizona Wildcats. Jefferson was drafted in the first round of the 2001 NBA draft with the 13th overall pick, and was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in his first season with the New Jersey Nets (now known as the Brooklyn Nets). He won an NBA championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016. He was also a member of the United States national team that won a bronze medal in the 2004 Summer Olympics.
Jefferson initially retired from playing in 2018, and became a basketball analyst. On July 2, 2019, he announced his intention to resume his playing career.

Bernard King

Bernard King (born December 4, 1956) is an American retired professional basketball player at the small forward position in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played 14 seasons with the New Jersey Nets, Utah Jazz, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and Washington Bullets. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on September 8, 2013. His younger brother, Albert, also played in the NBA during his career.

Rick Barry

Richard Francis Dennis Barry III (born March 28, 1944) is an American retired professional basketball player who played in both the American Basketball Association (ABA) and National Basketball Association (NBA). Named one of the 50 Greatest Players in history by the NBA in 1996, Barry is the only player to lead the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), ABA, and NBA in scoring for an individual season. He was known for his unorthodox but effective underhand free throw shooting technique, and at the time of his retirement in 1980 his .900 free throw percentage ranked first in NBA history. In 1987, Barry was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He is the father of former NBA players Brent Barry, Jon Barry, and Drew Barry and current professional player Canyon Barry.

Keith Van Horn

Keith Adam Van Horn (born October 23, 1975) is an American former professional basketball player. The 6 ft 10 in (2.08 m), 240 pounds (110 kg) forward graduated from Diamond Bar High School in Diamond Bar, California and attended the University of Utah where he went on to be a consensus First Team All-American in 1997. Van Horn finished his career at Utah as the school and Western Athletic Conference (WAC) all-time leading scorer and holds numerous other school records. He led Utah to three NCAA Division I top 25 finishes, including their highest ranking ever in school history (#2).  He received the 1997 ESPN Men's College Basketball Performer of the Year award.Van Horn was selected with the second pick of the 1997 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers and was traded to the New Jersey Nets on a draft night trade. Van Horn played for the Nets from 1997 to 2002, leading the Nets in scoring in the 1997–98 and 1998–99 seasons where he averaged over 20 points per game and ranked fifth in the NBA in scoring in the 1999 season. He was a major contributor to the 2001–02 Nets team, leading the team in rebounding and placing second on the team in scoring. During his NBA career, Van Horn also played for the 76ers, New York Knicks, Milwaukee Bucks, and Dallas Mavericks.
Van Horn officially retired from the NBA in 2008 and averaged 16.0 points and nearly 7 rebounds per game during his nine-year NBA career.



Larry Kenon

Larry Joe Kenon (born December 13, 1952) is an American former professional basketball player.
A 6'9" forward who had a productive career in both the American Basketball Association (ABA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA), Kenon played for the New York Nets, San Antonio Spurs, Chicago Bulls, Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers. His nicknames were "Mr. K" (to go with Nets teammate "Dr. J.", Julius Erving) and "Special K."

Calvin Natt

Calvin Leon Natt (born January 8, 1957) is a retired American professional basketball player.  A 6'6" (1.98 m) forward, Natt played at Northeast Louisiana University under coach Lenny Fant. After college, he played 11 NBA seasons (1979–1990), spending time with the New Jersey Nets, Portland Trail Blazers, Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, and Indiana Pacers.  He represented the Nuggets in the 1985 NBA All-Star Game, and retired with 10,291 career points. He is the older brother of former NBA player Kenny Natt.  Natt's nickname was "Pit Bull".Calvin Natt later became an ordained minister. He owns a funeral home in Denver, Colorado.

Orlando Woolridge

Orlando Vernada Woolridge (December 16, 1959 – May 31, 2012) was an American professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1981 to 1994. He was known for his scoring ability, especially on slam dunks.

Walter Simon

Walt Simon

Walter J. Simon (December 1, 1939 – October 10, 1997) was an American basketball player.  A 6'6" forward/guard from Benedict College, he played seven seasons (1967–1974) in the American Basketball Association for the New Jersey Americans/New York Nets and Kentucky Colonels.  He appeared in the 1969 ABA All-Star Game, and he scored 6,414 career points.
After retiring from basketball, he went on to work for John Y. Brown, Jr. (who had owned the Kentucky Colonels with his wife, Ellie Brown) at Kentucky Fried Chicken.  Simon became the first black Vice President of a Fortune 500 Company.
Born in Delcambre, Louisiana, Simon left a wife, Marge Simon, and three children: Michael, Chris, and Geanai.

Chris Morris

Christopher Vernard Morris (born January 20, 1966) is a retired American professional basketball player. In his 11-season (1988–1999) National Basketball Association career, the 6'8" small forward played for the New Jersey Nets, Utah Jazz, and Phoenix Suns. He is a graduate of Atlanta's Douglass High School where his jersey has been retired and played for the Auburn University Tigers. He scored 8,184 total points in his NBA career.

Art Heyman

Arthur Bruce Heyman (June 24, 1941 – August 27, 2012) was an American professional basketball player. Playing for Duke University in college, in 1963 he was USBWA Player of the Year, AP Player of the Year, UPI Player of the Year, Sporting News Player of the Year, Helms Foundation College Player of the Year, a consensus first-team All-American, ACC Player of the Year, and ACC Athlete of the Year. That year he was the first overall pick in the first round of the 1963 NBA draft.  He went on to have a 310-game professional career in the NBA and ABA.



Paul Pierce

Paul Anthony Pierce (born October 13, 1977) is an American former professional basketball player who played 19 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is currently an analyst on ESPN's NBA Countdown.
Pierce was a high school McDonald's All-American and earned consensus first-team All-America honors in his junior year at Kansas. After being chosen by the Boston Celtics with the 10th overall pick in the 1998 NBA draft, Pierce spent the first 15 years of his career with Boston. Pierce's nickname, "The Truth", was given to him by Shaquille O'Neal in March 2001. He starred as captain of the Celtics, earning 10 All-Star selections and becoming a four-time All-NBA team member. Pierce combined with Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen in 2007 to form a "Big Three" that led Boston to two NBA Finals and an NBA championship in 2008. Pierce was named NBA Finals Most Valuable Player in 2008. Along with Larry Bird and John Havlicek, Pierce is one of only three players to have scored more than 20,000 career points with the Celtics. 
In July 2013, Pierce was traded to the Brooklyn Nets along with teammates Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry. He signed with the Washington Wizards as a free agent in 2014. After one season with the Wizards, Pierce reunited with former Celtics coach Doc Rivers and signed with the Clippers. He spent two seasons with the Clippers before retiring in 2017. On July 17, 2017, the Celtics signed Pierce to a contract, enabling him to retire as a member of the organization with which he spent his first 15 NBA seasons.

Gerald Green

Gerald Green (born January 26, 1986) is an American professional basketball player for the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was drafted by the Boston Celtics with the 18th overall pick in the 2005 NBA draft. Known for his dunking skill, he has performed well in many slam dunk competitions, having won the 2005 McDonald's All-American Slam Dunk Contest and the 2007 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, while finishing as the runner-up in the 2008 NBA Slam Dunk Contest.

Joe Johnson

Joseph Marcus Johnson (born June 29, 1981) is an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Tri-State Triplets of the BIG3 professional basketball league. He played high school basketball for Little Rock Central High School and college basketball for the Arkansas Razorbacks. After two years with Arkansas, he declared for the 2001 NBA draft where he was drafted 10th overall by the Boston Celtics. He is a seven-time NBA All-Star and has also played for the Phoenix Suns, Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Miami Heat and Utah Jazz, while having also represented the United States national team.

Kevin Durant

Kevin Wayne Durant (born September 29, 1988) is an American professional basketball player for the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played one season of college basketball for the University of Texas, and was selected as the second overall pick by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 2007 NBA draft. He played nine seasons with the franchise, which became the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2008, before signing with the Golden State  Warriors in 2016, winning back-to-back championships in 2017 and 2018.
Durant was a heavily recruited high school prospect who was widely regarded as the second-best player in his class. In college, he won numerous year-end awards and became the first freshman to be named Naismith College Player of the Year. As a professional, he has won two NBA championships, an NBA Most Valuable Player Award, two Finals MVP Awards, two NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Awards, four NBA scoring titles, the NBA Rookie of the Year Award, and two Olympic gold medals. Durant has also been selected to nine All-NBA teams and ten NBA All-Star teams.
Off the court, Durant is one of the highest-earning basketball players in the world, due in part to endorsement deals with companies such as Foot Locker and Nike. He has developed a reputation for philanthropy and regularly leads the league in All-Star votes and jersey sales. In recent years, he has contributed to The Players' Tribune as both a photographer and writer. In 2012, he ventured into acting, appearing in the film Thunderstruck.

Mike Bantom

Michael Allen Bantom (born December 3, 1951) is an American former professional basketball player.
A 6'9" power forward/center from Saint Joseph's University, Bantom won a silver medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics as a member of the United States national basketball team, who lost a controversial final game to the Soviet Union.  He was selected by the Phoenix Suns with the eighth pick of the 1973 NBA draft, and he embarked upon a nine-year NBA (1973–82) career as a member of the Suns, Seattle SuperSonics, New York Nets, Indiana Pacers, and Philadelphia 76ers.  He earned All-Rookie Team honors and ended his NBA career with 8,568 total points, 4,517 total rebounds, and 1,623 total assists.  From 1982 until 1989, Bantom played professionally in Italy.
Since retiring as a player, Bantom has served as the licensing manager for NBA International, the NBA International director of marketing, the NBA senior vice president of player development, and the executive vice president of referee operations.Bantom is a father of four children, three daughters and a son.

George Carter

George Carter (born January 10, 1944) is an American retired professional basketball player. He was a 6'4" guard/forward.
Carter played at Silver Creek High School in New York, graduating in 1963. He was a two-time all-Western New York selection in basketball. He also played high school football and ran track.Carter played collegiate basketball at St. Bonaventure University.Carter was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the eighth round of the 1967 NBA draft.  He was also selected by the New Orleans Buccaneers in the 1967 ABA Draft.Carter played only game for the Pistons and then joined the Washington Caps of the rival American Basketball Association.  He went on to play seven seasons in the ABA, spending time with eight teams: the Caps, the Virginia Squires, the Carolina Cougars, the Pittsburgh Condors, the New York Nets, the Memphis Sounds, the Baltimore Claws (preseason games only) and the Utah Stars.  Carter represented the Squires in the 1971 ABA All-Star Game, and he retired from basketball in 1976 with 8,863 combined ABA/NBA career points.

Dennis Hopson

Dennis Hopson (born April 22, 1965) is a retired American professional basketball player and until the end of the 2013-14 season was an assistant coach at Bowling Green State University. A prolific scorer while playing at Ohio State University, Hopson's stellar shooting skills placed him in second for the NCAA Men's Basketball Division I scoring title during the 1986–87 season and eventually in first on Ohio State's all-time men's basketball career points record.  The All-American and 1987 Big Ten Conference Player of the Year was selected as the third overall pick in the 1987 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets, playing a total of five seasons in the league.  Hopson spent the majority of the 1990s playing basketball overseas before retiring at the close of the decade.

Roy Hinson

Roy Hinson (born May 2, 1961) is a retired American professional basketball player who was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round (20th pick overall) of the 1983 NBA draft. Hinson attended Franklin High School in Franklin Township, New Jersey. He then played his college career at Rutgers University in nearby New Brunswick. A 6'9" forward–center, Hinson played in eight NBA seasons from 1983 to 1991, for the Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Nets.
Hinson's best year as a professional came during the 1985–86 season as a member of the Cavaliers, appearing in 82 games and averaging 19.6 points per game. He also participated in the 1986 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, finishing seventh out of eight contestants. In his NBA career, Hinson played in 507 games and scored a total of 7,206 points.
After his successful 1986 season he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers for the Number 1 overall pick in the 1986 draft which became Brad Daugherty. He was never again able to reach the same height he had in Cleveland, later going to the Nets and then retiring.

Jim Jackson

James Jackson (born October 14, 1970) is an American retired professional basketball player. Over his 14 NBA seasons, Jackson was on the active roster of 12 different teams, tying the league record shared with Joe Smith, Tony Massenburg and Chucky Brown. He is currently a basketball analyst for Fox Sports 1, having previously worked for the Big Ten Network.

Cliff Robinson

Clifford Ralph Robinson (born December 16, 1966) is an American retired professional basketball player who played 18 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA).  Selected 36th overall in the 1989 draft, he played the first 8 seasons of his career with the Portland Trail Blazers, followed by stints with the Phoenix Suns, Detroit Pistons, Golden State Warriors, and New Jersey Nets.  Robinson received the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award in 1993 and was selected as an All-Star in 1994.  Robinson played college basketball at the University of Connecticut.

Albert King

Albert King (born December 17, 1959) is a retired American professional basketball player. King played at Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn and is regarded as one of the nation's greatest high school players of all time. He was rated the top prep player in the nation over Magic Johnson and Gene Banks during his senior year. A 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m) guard-forward from the University of Maryland, King was selected by the New Jersey Nets in the first round (10th overall) of the 1981 NBA draft. King played in nine NBA seasons for four teams.

Mike McGee

Michael Ray McGee (born July 29, 1959) is an American professional basketball coach and former player in the National Basketball Association (NBA).McGee was born in Tyler, Texas. He then moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where he played high school basketball at Omaha North High School. McGee scored 916 points during his senior season of high school in 1976–77.
McGee played college basketball at the University of Michigan from 1977 to 1981. He was the first player in Michigan Wolverines men's basketball history to lead the team in scoring four consecutive years. He did so with 531 points (19.7 points per game) in the 1977–78 season, 511 points (18.9 points per game) in the 1978–79 season, 665 points (22.2 points per game) in the 1979–80 season, and 732 points (24.4 points per game) in the 1980–81 season.  McGee continues to rank among Michigan's all-time leaders in several statistical categories, including:

McGee averaged 9.6 points per game in his NBA career and won two NBA championships  with the Lakers in 1982 and 1985.
