Blanchett was born in Melbourne to an Australian mother and Texan father, who died of a heart attack when Blanchett was 10. She spent her childhood in Melbourne and eventually attended and dropped out of the University of Melbourne. After playing an American cheerleader in an Egyptian boxing movie while overseas, Blanchett enrolled and graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art.

During the early and mid-1990s, she landed mostly stage and television work. It wasn’t until 1997 that she had a supporting role in the movie Paradise Road. Her first major role was portraying Elizabeth I in the 1998 international hit Elizabeth. For that role, Blanchett received numerous awards and nominations. Many regard it as being one of the best Cate Blanchett movies of all time.

Then she went on to star in one of the most popular movies of all time, The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Since then, some other top Cate Blanchett movies have included Babel, Hot Fuzz, and Notes on a Sandal. Her more recent filmography includes the Marvel blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok, in which she plays in the villain Hela and The Hobbit series of movies.
