The Shining miniseries aired on ABC in 1997 over the course of three nights. Why the need for the small screen adaptation? Stephen King repeatedly made his disappointment well-known regarding Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 big screen version of the horror master's 1977 best seller of the same name. The story goes that King desired to make the miniseries because he wanted the opportunity to write and produce an adaptation that he felt was truer to his novel. Here’s a look at The Shining TV series cast.
King had major issues with Kubrick’s casting of Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance and Shelley Duvall as his wife Wendy. The horror author said of the film’s antagonist, “Jack Torrance in the movie, seems crazy from the jump. Jack Nicholson, I’d seen all his biker pictures in the ’50s and ’60s and I thought, he’s just channeling ‘The Wild Angels‘ here.”
King's criticism of Duvall was even harsher. “Shelley Duvall as Wendy is really one of the most misogynistic characters ever put on film, she’s basically just there to scream and be stupid and that’s not the woman that I wrote about.”
Here are The Shining TV show characters. See which famous actors King felt would be better suited for the lead roles, then make your voice heard. Vote up which of The Shining TV cast is your favorite.
