5. Hinata Hyuuga vs. Neji Hyuuga
This fight is less about advancing in the chuunin exams and more about conflicts within the Hyuuga family. Neji was born into the 'branch family' which is expected to support the main family at any cost - even at the cost of their own lives. That's how Neji's father passed away - he sacrificed his own life for his twin brother. Neji is still processing this terrible event, and wants desperately to prove how much stronger he is than Hinata, and how deserving he and his father are of equal or even superior treatment. Meanwhile, Hinata wants to prove that she's stronger than Neji thinks she is - her family is constantly lamenting the fact that the genius boy is wasting away in the branch family, while Hinata does not deserve her main family post. But Hinata also wants to prove herself to Naruto, who she loves and admires.
Neji goes as hard as he possibly can, beating Hinata until she's bleeding from the mouth and losing consciousness. Though he's declared the winner, most people in the audience aren't happy with how merciless he was.Great fight?
6. Team 7 Vs. Orochimaru
Out of all the fights that take place during the Chuunin Exams, this one is the most unexpected, and the most consequential.
After stealing the body of a grass ninja named Shiore in order to infiltrate the Chuunin Exams, he zeroes in on his true objective: Sasuke Uchiha. Naruto and Sasuke try their hardest, and they do make some headway - Naruto even manages to defeat Orochimaru's summoned snake, and he's also able to snap Sasuke out of a stupor of terror.
But despite their best efforts, the two genin don't stand a chance against the legendary Sannin, and the fight ends with the two losing consciousness. Before that happens, though, Orochimaru implants his Cursed Seal into Sasuke's neck, with the ultimate goal of luring him to come join him in the future.Great fight?
7. Shikamaru Nara vs. Kin Tsuchi
Like many Otogakure ninja, Kin Tsuchi uses a sound-based technique. Hers involves throwing senbon needles with attached ringing bells. This combined with genjutsu allows her to confuse and disorient her opponents. Unfortunately for her, this doesn't really work on Shikamaru. He quickly gains the upper hand by using his Shadow Imitation Technique.
Once Kin is ensnared, he throws a shuriken in her direction, forcing her to do the same. But when they both duck, she bonks her head on the wall and passes out, while Shikamaru just gets a good yoga stretch in.Great fight?
8. Zaku Abumi vs. Shino Aburame
Zaku Abumi is a Sound ninja who has hollow tubes in his arms that let him use chakra to send out blasts of air and sound waves through his hands. This doesn't work out so well against Shino Aburame, who uses his kikaichu insects to fill up the tubes and cause them to burst. In the manga, this results in Zaku's arm being severed, but in the anime it's only badly damaged but still attached.Great fight?
