A “One True Pairing,” better known as an OTP, is a descriptive term used only in extreme fandoms and nowhere else. Since comic book fans rank among the most obsessive in the world, it stands to reason you'd find countless OTPs in comic books. For those still confused by this term of geekdom, comic book One True Pairings are fictional romantic couplings who, according to fans, absolutely belong together. Though mountains of canonical evidence might exist against a particular DC couple, such matters appear trivial to fans who feel the characters are destined for one another. Often, characters will end up with someone who is not their designated OTP, causing fans to root for that relationship to collapse so their preferred pairing can reunite.
Publishers absolutely understand how rabid their fanbases are, and that the best comic book OTPs drive fans absolutely wild. The publishers play upon the best comic book couples to stoke both fan interest and fan outrage. As quick as readers end up frothing at the mouth over an interruption in their favorite OTP, they will just as easily support anything even hinting at uniting a Marvel couple that they “ship.” A quick glance at the right message boards shows some fans put more effort into fictional relationships than most people put into real ones.
