Although imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, a good cover song has a life of its own. It might even make you forget the original. So many people are familiar with Eric Clapton’s version of “I Shot the Sheriff” that they don’t realize it was a reggae tune by Bob Marley, or that Jimi Hendrix’s wailing “All Along the Watchtower” was an acoustic song by Bob Dylan. No one is going to mistake the grungy, American rhythm and blues of Joe Cocker’s “With A Little Help From My Friends” for the bouncy Beatles version sung by Ringo Starr.

Regardless of how different the song is, the question remains: Do you like it? Does the song work on its own merits? You’ve probably heard some of the songs on this list. Others will be new and even a little strange. Vote for the ones you like the most.
