Joe Dumars

A list of the best Detroit Pistons of all time. Originally based in Fort Wayne, Ind., the Pistons have been in Detroit since 1957. The team's Bad Boys moniker best represents the best players in this hard-nosed franchise's history. The Pistons have had some Hall of Famers in its early years, but nothing compared to the outstanding players that were on its dominant teams in the late '80s&nbsp;The Pistons teams of the late 1980s were some of the toughest and baddest dudes in the NBA. Led by their fearless leader Isiah Thomas, considered one of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/the-top-nba-players-of-all-time">greatest basketball players ever</a>, the Pistons, nicknamed &quot;The Bad Boys,&quot; went to three consecutive NBA Finals, winning back-to-back titles in 1989 and 1990. Behind Thomas, Joe Dumars and young forward name Dennis Rodman, the Pistons experienced the best years in franchise history. After Thomas, Dumars and the rest of the Bad Boys retired, the Pistons drafted a young Grant Hill, who almost singlehandedly carried Detroit on his back to multiple playoff appearances.The team had another successful run during the mid-2000s. Led by Chauncey Billups (aka Mr. Big Shot) and Ben Wallace, the team won a championship in 2004 and made the Finals in 2005. Those players are some of most revered and greatest in Pistons history. Isiah Thomas

Isiah Lord Thomas III (born April 30, 1961) is an American former basketball player who played professionally for the Detroit Pistons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). A point guard, the 12-time NBA All-Star was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History and  inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Thomas has also been a professional and collegiate head coach, a basketball executive, and a broadcaster.
Thomas played collegiately for the Indiana Hoosiers, leading them to the 1981 NCAA championship as a sophomore and declaring for the NBA draft. He was taken as the second overall pick by the Pistons in the 1981 NBA draft, and played for them his entire career, while leading the "Bad Boys" to the 1988–89 and 1989–90 NBA championships.
After his playing career, he was an executive with the Toronto Raptors, a television commentator, an executive with the Continental Basketball Association, head coach of the Indiana Pacers, and an executive and head coach for the New York Knicks. He was later the men's basketball coach for the Florida International University (FIU) Golden Panthers for three seasons from 2009 to 2012. In early May 2015, amidst controversy, Thomas was named president and part owner of the Knicks' WNBA sister team, the New York Liberty, subsequent to the re-hiring of Thomas's former Pistons teammate, Bill Laimbeer, as the team's coach.

Chauncey Billups

Chauncey Ray Billups (born September 25, 1976) is retired American professional basketball player.  He played 17 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). A star at the University of Colorado, he was selected third overall in the 1997 NBA draft by the Boston Celtics. A five-time NBA All-Star and a three-time All-NBA selection, Billups played for the Celtics, Toronto Raptors, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks, and Los Angeles Clippers during his NBA career. He won the NBA Finals MVP in 2004 after helping the Pistons beat the Los Angeles Lakers in the Finals, and was given the nickname "Mr. Big Shot" for making late-game shots with Detroit. The Pistons retired his #1 jersey in 2016.In 2004, Billups was honored by the University of Colorado by being the fifth player to have his jersey (number 4) retired. The Coors Events Center also has a large mural of Billups in the northeast corner of the arena as part of his "Chauncey's Kid Roundup" program.

Joe Dumars III (born May 24, 1963) is an American former basketball player in the National Basketball Association.
He could play either shooting guard or point guard on offense and was a highly effective defender. He played for the Detroit Pistons from 1985 until 1999. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Dumars and Isiah Thomas combined to form one of the best backcourts in NBA history. Initially a shooting guard, Dumars moved to point guard following Thomas' retirement in 1994, sharing ball-handling duties with Grant Hill. Dumars was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. Dumars served as the President of Basketball Operations for the Detroit Pistons from 2000 to 2014.

Dave Bing

David Bing (born November 24, 1943) is an American retired Hall of Fame basketball player, former mayor of Detroit, Michigan, and businessman.
After starring at Syracuse University, Bing played 12 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a guard for the Detroit Pistons (1966 to 1975), Washington Bullets (1975 to 1977), and Boston Celtics (1977–78). During his career, he averaged over 20 points and six assists per game and made seven NBA All-Star appearances, winning the game's Most Valuable Player award in 1976. The Pistons celebrated his career accomplishments with the retirement of his #21 jersey. In addition, he was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and named one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players of all-time.
Bing founded Bing Steel, a processing company that earned him the National Minority Small Business Person of the Year award in 1984. Soon the business grew into the multimillion-dollar Detroit-based conglomerate, the Bing Group, one of the largest steel companies in Michigan.
Bing entered Detroit politics as a Democrat in 2008, announcing his intentions to run for mayor in the city's non-partisan primary to finish the term of Kwame Kilpatrick, who had resigned amid a corruption scandal. After winning the primary, Bing then defeated Interim Mayor Kenneth Cockrel, Jr. and was sworn in as mayor in May 2009. Later that year, Bing was re-elected to a full term. However, he lost most of his power to Detroit's emergency manager Kevyn Orr, had numerous health problems, and suffered approval ratings as low as 14%. Bing thus did not seek re-election in 2013 and was succeeded by politician and businessman Mike Duggan.

Allen Iverson

Allen Ezail Iverson (; born June 7, 1975), nicknamed "the Answer", is an American former professional basketball player. He played 14 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) at both the shooting guard and point guard positions. Iverson was an 11-time NBA All-Star, won the All-Star game MVP award in 2001 and 2005, and was the NBA's Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 2001. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016.
Iverson attended Bethel High School in Hampton, Virginia, and was a dual-sport athlete. He earned the Associated Press High School Player of the Year award in both football and basketball, and won the Division AAA Virginia state championship in both sports. After high school, Iverson played college basketball with the Georgetown Hoyas for two years, where he set the school record for career scoring average (22.9 points per game) and won Big East Defensive Player of the Year awards both years.Following two successful years at Georgetown, Iverson declared eligibility for the 1996 NBA draft, and was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the first overall pick. He was named the NBA Rookie of the Year in the 1996–97 season. Winning the NBA scoring title during the 1998–99, 2000–01, 2001–02, and 2004–05 seasons, Iverson was one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history, despite his relatively small stature (listed at 6 feet, 0 inches). His regular season career scoring average of 26.7 points per game ranks seventh all-time, and his playoff career scoring average of 29.7 points per game is second only to Michael Jordan. Iverson was also the NBA Most Valuable Player of the 2000–01 season, and led his team to the 2001 NBA Finals the same season. Iverson represented the United States at the 2004 Summer Olympics, winning the bronze medal.
Later in his career, Iverson played for the Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons, and the Memphis Grizzlies, before ending his NBA career with the 76ers during the 2009–10 season. He was rated the fifth greatest NBA shooting guard of all time by ESPN in 2008. He finished his career in Turkey with Beşiktaş in 2011. He returned as a player-coach for 3's Company in the inaugural season of the BIG3.

Vinnie Johnson

Vincent Johnson (born September 1, 1956), is an American retired professional basketball player and a key player as sixth man for the Detroit Pistons during the team's National Basketball Association (NBA) championships of 1989 and 1990. He was nicknamed "the Microwave" in the NBA.

Lindsey Hunter

Lindsey Benson Hunter Jr. (born December 3, 1970) is an American former professional basketball player and coach. He played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1993 to 2010, spending  most of his career with Detroit Pistons. He was also the interim head coach of the Phoenix Suns in 2013.

Kevin Porter (born April 17, 1950) is a retired American professional basketball player. He played ten seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and led the league in assists in four of those seasons.
Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Porter graduated from DuSable High School, then played point guard at Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pennsylvania. He played ten seasons (1972–1981; 1982–1983) in the NBA as a member of the Baltimore/Capital/Washington Bullets, Detroit Pistons, and New Jersey Nets. One of the most talented passers in league history, Porter led the league in both assists per game and total assists four times during his career.

Eric Money

Eric V. Money (born February 6, 1955) is a former American professional basketball player born in Detroit, Michigan.
A 6' 0" guard from the University of Arizona, Money played six seasons (from 1974 to 1980) in the National Basketball Association as a member of the Detroit Pistons, New Jersey Nets, and Philadelphia 76ers. He averaged 12.2 points per game in his NBA career.
He is the one of three players in NBA history to have played for two teams in a single game, and the only player in NBA history to officially score for two teams in the same game. This happened because of mistakes by referee Richie Powers and a subsequent replay of the game in question between the Nets and 76ers. In time between the NBA approving the Nets' protest of the game and the game being replayed, Money, Harvey Catchings, and Ralph Simpson swapped teams. (Al Skinner was also traded, but did not see playing time for either squad, making him the only player in NBA history to have an official DNP for both teams in the same NBA game.)
Money was one of several professional basketball players to appear in the 1979 film The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh.

Ish Smith

Ishmael Larry Smith (born July 5, 1988) is an American professional basketball player for the Washington Wizards of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for Wake Forest before going undrafted in the 2010 NBA draft.

Brandon Jennings

Brandon Byron Jennings (born September 23, 1989) is an American professional basketball player who most recently played for the Milwaukee Bucks. After graduating from Oak Hill Academy, Jennings decided to take his talent to the professional basketball club Lottomatica Roma in Italy, leading to controversy and debate regarding the NBA's "prep-to-pro" policy adopted in 2006. After a year in Italy, he declared for the 2009 NBA draft and was selected 10th overall by the Bucks. Jennings played four seasons in Milwaukee before being traded to the Detroit Pistons in 2013. He spent his next three seasons in Detroit before he was traded to the Orlando Magic in 2016. He went on to split the 2016–17 season between the New York Knicks and Washington Wizards.

Darryl Gerard "D. J." Augustin Jr. (born November 10, 1987) is an American professional basketball player for the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the University of Texas Longhorns from 2006 to 2008. He was drafted ninth overall by the Charlotte Bobcats in the 2008 NBA draft.

Andrew Michael "Handy Andy" Phillip (March 7, 1922 – April 29, 2001) was an American professional basketball player. Born in Granite City, Illinois, Phillip had an 11-year career and played for the Chicago Stags of the Basketball Association of America and the Philadelphia Warriors, Fort Wayne Pistons and Boston Celtics, all of the National Basketball Association.

Will Bynum

William Bynum (born January 4, 1983) is an American professional basketball player for Yeşilgiresun Belediye of the Turkish Basketball Super League (BSL). He played college basketball for the University of Arizona and Georgia Tech before going undrafted in the 2005 NBA draft.

Donald Jay Ohl (born April 18, 1936) is an American former professional basketball player who spent 10 seasons (1960–1970) in the National Basketball Association. His nickname was Waxie because of his crew cut.

Ron Lee

Ronald Henry Lee (born November 2, 1952) was an All-American basketball player for the University of Oregon, and epitomized the "Kamikaze Kids" under coach Dick Harter with his all-out, fearless hustle and relentless desire to win.  Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Lee played four seasons for the Ducks between 1972 and 1976.  The Phoenix Suns made him the tenth selection in the NBA draft in 1976. Despite not playing football in high school and college, the NFL's San Diego Chargers also made him a 12th round selection in the 1976 NFL draft. In the NBA, Lee was named to the 1977 NBA All-Rookie Team and led the NBA in steals the following season.  Overall, Lee had a solid, but not spectacular career as a reserve, and became a fan favorite because of his effort on the court.
Ron Lee is still the all-time leading scorer for the University of Oregon with 2,085 points in his four seasons of play.  He ranks second in career assists with 572, first in field goals (838), and fifth in free throws made (409).  He was first-team All-Pac-8  in all four seasons with the Ducks, and made numerous All-American lists during his final three seasons. Lee was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.
After ending his NBA career, Lee played for 3 years in Italy.

Tony Windis

Tony Windis is a former NBA basketball player for the Detroit Pistons. Windis played college basketball at the University of Wyoming, where he ranks 2nd all time in the school's career scoring average with 21.2 ppg. He was drafted with the second pick in the fifth round of the 1959 NBA Draft. He appeared in nine games for the Detroit Pistons in the 1959-60 NBA season and he averaged 4.0 points per game, 5.2 rebounds per game and 3.6 assists per game.

Brandon Knight

Brandon Emmanuel Knight (born December 2, 1991) is an American professional basketball player for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). A two-time Gatorade National Player of the Year, Knight played one season of college basketball for Kentucky before being selected by the Detroit Pistons in the 2011 NBA draft. After two seasons with the Pistons, he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. He spent a season and a half in Milwaukee before being traded to the Phoenix Suns in February 2015. In August 2018, he was traded to the Rockets.

Howard K. "Butch" Komives ( KOH-myvez; May 9, 1941 – March 22, 2009) was an American professional basketball player who spent ten seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Buffalo Braves and Kansas City-Omaha Kings.
Born in Toledo, Ohio, he graduated from Woodward High School (Toledo) in 1960.

Gene Shue

Eugene William Shue (born December 18, 1931) is an American retired professional basketball player and coach in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Shue was one of the top guards of the early days of the NBA and an influential figure in the development of basketball. He is credited with inventing the "Spin Move" while being an early harbinger of other plays and strategies. Shue was an NBA All-Star five consecutive times (1958–62). After his successful playing career, he became a long-serving coach, twice winning NBA Coach of the Year. Throughout his career as player, coach, and executive, Shue was "a specialist at taking over faltering teams."

Larry Drew

Larry Donnell Drew (born April 2, 1958) is an American professional basketball coach and former player who most recently served as the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The point guard played college basketball for the Missouri Tigers before being selected by the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the 1980 NBA draft with the 17th overall pick. He played 10 seasons in the NBA for the Pistons, Kansas City/Sacramento Kings, Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers. His best year as a professional came during the 1982–83 season as a member of the Kings, appearing in 75 games and averaging 20.1 points, 8.1 assists and 1.7 steals per contest.He was named to the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
