This episode is important because it is the first physical appearance of the Flying Dutchman. He turns up at the Krusty Krab after everyone was making fun of Spongebob for being scared of him. The Flying Dutchman doesn't exactly come out on top here, as he runs scared when he removes Spongebob's costume and gets an unexpected peek at his brain. It was a big win for Spongebob, since he finally succeeded in scaring people. However, it was also a big day for the Flying Dutchman, who would go on to reappear in numerous throughout the series.

Mr. Krabs episodes of Spongebob are typically about his problem with greed. This one is no different, as the businessman sees Spongebob and Patrick playing a board game called "The Flying Dutchman's Treasure Hunt," and becomes addicted. That obsession eventually leads him to bring Patrick and Spongebob on a real treasure hunt, using the map from the board game. The trio never really know where they're supposed to be going, but end up stumbling right onto the "X" that marks the spot. As they begin to dig, Mr. Krabs' greed comes out, and he tells them becuase he is the captain, the treasure all belongs to him. As if on cue, The Flying Dutchman appears looking for his treasure, and Mr. Krabs greedily blames the digging on Patrick and Spongebob. It blows up in his face, however, when the Dutchman gives each of them gold coins as a reward for digging for him.

This episode is an allegory for the danger and consequences of greed. Mr. Krabs refuses to throw away a clearly expired and unsafe Krabby Patty, because he doesn't want to lose the money. To try to prove a point to his employees, Mr. Krabs ends up eating the expired patty, and landing himself in the hospital. Enter: The Flying Dutchman. He comes to take Mr. Krabs to Davey Jones' Locker, but ends up relenting, and giving him a second chance as long as he promises to be less greedy. The "new," generous Mr. Krabs doesn't last long, and so The Flying Dutchman makes another appearance. Spongebob tries to save Mr. Krabs' soul by betting the Dutchman his greedy boss would save him over the money in the Dutchman's pocket. Unfortunately, Spongebob loses the bet, and is seemingly hauled off to Davy Jones' Locker. However, The Flying Dutchman quickly returns him, complaining he was too annoying.

When an anchor drops down onto their homes, Spongebob, Patrick, and Squidward climb up it, to see whose ship has disturbed them. Turns out, it's the ship of The Flying Dutchman, and since they've snuck aboard, he now wants to keep them there forever. Spongebob and Patrick manage to earn three wishes from The Flying Dutchman, after they steal his dining sock, which he apparently cannot eat without. Spongebob uses one of his wishes to turn The Flying Dutchman into a vegetarian, so he cannot eat them. It's a genius plan, until The Flying Dutchman just turns them into fruit...
