Formed in 1994 (the same year Nirvana folded after the death of Kurt Cobain), the Foo Fighters was Dave Grohl’s secret solo project he used to demo songs he wrote while drumming with Nirvana. After Cobain died and Nirvana dissolved, Grohl’s demos became the Foo Fighters’ self-titled debut album. He eventually formed a band consisting of Nate Mendel of Sunny Day Real Estate, Taylor Hawkins (who was once Alanis Morissette’s drummer), and Pat Smear of the Germs.
