Looking for a few great games similar to Minecraft? Although it's more than 10 years old, Minecraft is still one of the most popular games today (just see our current most popular games list for proof.) The open-world adventure title helped launch the sandbox genre to the mainstream, giving players complete control over blocky characters and even blockier backgrounds. While it’s definitely a revolutionary game, there are plenty of other building games like Minecraft that offer similar gameplay mechanics with tons of replay value.

While there have been tons of imitators and copy-cat titles over the years (some good, some really bad), we’ve decided to rank our 15 favorite games that feel and act (or least feature various gameplay elements) the way Minecraft does. From popular titles like Stardew Valley, which offers a lot of the same gameplay mechanics but in a fun 2D version, to survival series like Don’t Starve, which of these games have you played? And which ones did you find most similar to Minecraft?

Vote up all the great games you’ve played, and vote down the titles you really don't see a striking similarity to Minecraft.

  • Terraria is listed (or ranked) 1 on the list 15 Games You Need To Play If You Love 'Minecraft'
    Photo: Re-Logic

Why you should play it: When most people describe Terraria to their friends, they tend to mention how it's like it a 2D version of Minecraft, and for good reason: there are several elements that are similar, but the building and mining aspects share the strongest resemblance. You need to head into the caves to gather resources so you can get stronger. You'll also want to build a house to protect yourself from enemies that come out at night.

What makes it unique: Although you'll spend a lot of your time mining and building, Terraria at its core is about defeating bosses. You need to constantly upgrade your gear and become stronger in order to defeat more than 20 bosses. Although Minecraft has a few bosses in the Elder Dragon and Wither, it doesn't compare to Terraria. If you're craving more action and adventure in a sandbox game, this is the game for you.

  • Stardew Valley is listed (or ranked) 2 on the list 15 Games You Need To Play If You Love 'Minecraft'

Why you should play it: With so much to manage in Stardew Valley, it can be easy to forget that a lot of the core elements of the game are similar to Minecraft. You'll spend lots of time building and expanding your farm and fighting to survive. Also, like Minecraft, you don't want to be out at night or you might regret it. Sure, you won't find zombies, but you might get attacked.

What makes it unique: Even though it shares a lot of similar gameplay elements with Minecraft, there are also plenty of factors that set it apart. For starters, Stardew Valley lets players get to know their community and forge lasting relationships. Gamers can even get married! There are also quests for you to complete, and there are ways for you to make money outside of mining diamonds. It's also a 2D game, which is a pretty substantial change.

  • LEGO Worlds is listed (or ranked) 3 on the list 15 Games You Need To Play If You Love 'Minecraft'
    Photo: TT Games

Why you should play it: When Minecraft was first released, many people referred to it as LEGO in a video game. Now LEGO has switched things around and made a LEGO Minecraft game. You'll do many of the same things as you would in Minecraft, but in LEGO form.

What makes it unique: LEGO Worlds lets you craft, build, and explore open-world environments just like you would in Minecraft. However, you'll also get to enjoy a campaign mode and find collectibles like in ye olde LEGO games. LEGO Worlds gives you the feel of Minecraft, but it also makes you feel like you're playing with LEGO with your friends again.

  • Subnautica is listed (or ranked) 4 on the list 15 Games You Need To Play If You Love 'Minecraft'
    Photo: Unknown Worlds Entertainment

Why you should play it: If you're looking for another survival and exploration-based game, Subnautica is a great option. You'll need to overcome dangerous enemies, collect resources, and build a base to survive like in Minecraft. You'll also slowly upgrade your tools as you make progress and gather new resources.

What makes it unique: Unlike Minecraft, you'll be stranded on a watery planet. As a result, you'll need to keep eye on your oxygen levels or risk drowning. There's also a story that you'll follow as you progress through the game, which is something Minecraft lacks. You can also play Subnautica in VR if you have the proper equipment.
