List RulesVote up all the games like RDR2 that aren't just another Rockstar epic.

Western games are hard to pull off, but so far Rockstar’s three for three (if you don’t include the non-canon Undead Nightmare). Released at the end of 2018, Red Dead Redemption 2 is an epic open-world action-adventure game where players take control of Arthur Morgan, an aging outlaw who’s struggling to cope with the changing world around him. As one of the greatest action-adventure games of the decade, there are plenty of other games like Red Dead Redemption that share similar storylines and gameplay mechanics.

Looking for a beautiful RPG adventure? The Witcher 3 is a great choice. While the story deals with steel and silver in lieu of gunpowder, they share a similar style and are both incredibly engrossing. And if you’re looking for a few great westerns to dig into, Call of Juarez and Lead and Gold are great places to start.

If you’re looking for great games that are like Red Dead Redemption, then be sure to check out these awesome titles. Vote up the ones you think are a worthy next step so other gamers can see which similar titles to pick up next.

Why you should play it: Easily one of the most popular games in recent years of all time, Witcher 3 is a gorgeous third-person, open-world RPG that transports gamers to an expensive land mass known only as The Continent. You'll have dozens of quests to complete and a vast map to explore. The story is intricate, and the monsters you face are incredibly challenging.

What makes it unique: Instead of playing in the Old West like you do in Red Dead, you'll play as a Monster Hunter. Combat is arguably more complicated and you play in a fantasy world. Nonetheless, Witcher 3 is regarded as one of the best RPGs of all time, so it's definitely worth a try.

  • Grand Theft Auto V

Why you should play it: The GTA franchise is one of the longest standing RPG franchises and the games have always been popular, but Rockstar really hit it out of the park with GTA V. You'll get to explore the streets of Los Santos as you perform exciting and intricate heists. You'll get that feeling of being an outlaw like you do in Red Dead Redemption but in the modern world. Because both GTA and RDR are Rockstar games, the mechanics and gameplay elements are incredibly similar—which is a good thing.

What makes it unique: In GTA you'll switch between three incredibly unique characters: Franklin, Michael, and Trevor. Each has different motivations and personality traits. Sometimes you'll complete quests with theme separately, while at other times they'll team up for breathtaking missions. If you like exploring and doing your own thing, GTA V is a great game for that as there's lots of room to explore inside and outside the city.

  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Why you should play it: Skyrim is possibly the most popular RPG of all time. Released in 2011, the game set records for games sold and even made waves in mainstream media. The RPG elements of Skyrim are similar to Red Dead Redemption, and the world is just as vast (possibly even more so). You'll be able to put as much time into Skyrim as you did Red Dead, if not more considering the online replay value for RDR2 is still somewhat lacking.

What makes it unique: Skyrim takes place in a fantasy world, which is slightly different from the Western-themed game you're used to. However, that shouldn't put you off as you'll get to enjoy a skill and perk system that was revolutionary at the time. You aren't forced into picking a class, so you can adapt as you go and build a class that's as unique as you want. It's a game every RPG fan should play.

  • Fallout: New Vegas
Photo: Fallout: New Vegas / Obsidian Entertainment

Why you should play it: Fallout: New Vegas is a spin-off of the original Fallout franchise. Taking place in post-apocalyptic City of Sin, players are faced with disturbing (and often disgusting) foes. If you enjoy the open world and shooter elements of Red Dead Redemption, Fallout isn't a big jump. In fact, one could argue that it's the same type of game just in a different setting.

What makes it unique: The Fallout franchise has created post-apocalyptic settings like none other. It also has a few game mechanics that are unique to the franchise. Most notably there's the V.A.T.S. system, where players can freeze time to take a shot at a specific part of the body. Players will be given a percentage chance of connecting. This element—among a few other cool quirks—makes Fallout: New Vegas unique from other RPGs.
