You could call Genesis the chameleons of the music industry. When they formed in 1967, the lineup consisted of Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, and Anthony Phillips. At the time, they were mostly a folk rock band, later evolving into arty prog-rock territory. By the time Phil Collins took over on lead vocals, Genesis gained commercial success with the glossier albums Duke (1980) and Abacab (1981).
