Jim Gordon might be one of the worst characters in the DC mythos. Before you get your Batman underoos in a bunch, think about it. He somehow rose to one of the highest positions in the Gotham police force by barely his doing job. In fact, he mostly lucked out because everyone who was his superior got blown up. Instead of referring to him as Commissioner Gordon, we should just be calling him, Jim Gordon Gotham Resident. As of issue 41 of Batman, written by Scott Snyder, Gordon has found a new way to shirk his responsibilities by dallying around in a mech suit and calling himself Batman 2.0. There is a popular theory, sometimes called the Batman Villain fan theory or Bruce Wayne crazy theory, which suggests the caped hero is a patient at&nbsp;Arkham Asylum. The <a href="/list/batman-fan-theories/cehudspeth" target="_blank">theory says that Bruce Wayne</a> developed a life-altering mental illness after witnessing&nbsp;his parents&#39;&nbsp;death, and had to enter&nbsp;Arkham Asylum since&nbsp;Alfred wasn&#39;t able to properly care for him. Instead of training to fight the bad guys who hurt his parents, young Wayne&#39;s&nbsp;psychosis became more severe, causing him to imagine becoming the hero Batman. While this isn&#39;t how comics typically play out, it does sound more plausible in the real world.

The theory further suggests that each of Bruce&#39;s imagined villains are a reflection of his own psyche, which he casts upon his fellow patients and health care workers in Arkham. Each villain represents a separate part of his mental state, as he uses&nbsp;his Batman fantasy as a form of personalized therapy. While some villains are insane, <a href="/list/most-violent-batman-villains/jacobybancroft" target="_blank">others are violent</a>, and a few are sometimes caring. If you examine the main villains, this theory sounds more plausible.

Since his start in Detective Comics&nbsp;#27, Batman has been one of the most popular <a class="edS-cl" href="https://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/best-dc-comics-heroes?ref=internalCrossLinking_keyword">DC Comics characters</a>. You've got maniacal clowns (Joker, Harley Quinn), trained assassins (Bane, Ra's Al Ghul), animal-themed foes (The Penguin, Catwoman, Killer Croc), matter manipulators (Mr. Freeze, Clayface), and much more. He truly has one of <a class="edS-cl" href="https://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/the-best-movie-villains-of-all-time?ref=internalCrossLinking_keyword">the best villain</a> rosters in comics.And then, there are <a class="edS-cl" href="https://www.ranker.com/list/full-cast-of-the-other-guys-actors-and-actresses/reference?ref=internalCrossLinking_keyword">the other guys</a>. Most billionaires-turned-superheroes would probably fire their help if they spoke to them the way Alfred jokes with Bruce, but Alfred keeps the world’s greatest detective grounded; keeps the hype from going to Bruce’s head. Occasionally, DC Comics' most fearsome vigilante is also sweet, sensitive, and even sad. Alfred Pennyworth

Alfred Thaddeus Crane Pennyworth is a fictional character who appears throughout the DC Universe. The character first appears in Batman #16, and was created by writers Bob Kane and Bill Finger, and artist Jerry Robinson. Alfred serves as a loyal, tireless butler who assists his employer's secret life as Batman. In modern interpretations, he is depicted as Bruce Wayne's butler, legal guardian, best friend, aide-de-camp, and surrogate parent following the murders of Thomas Wayne and Martha Wayne. He has sometimes been called "Batman's batman". He also provides comic relief, as his sometimes sarcastic and cynical attitude often adds humor to dialogue occurring between himself and Batman. A vital part of the Batman mythos, the character has been consistently popular over the years, having received a nomination for the R.A.C.
