The 20 Best Anime Protagonists Who Are Half-Monster

Anime is full of humans and monsters - and it's also full of characters who bridge the two worlds. Whether it's a character who was born to one demon parent and one human parent or a character who was transformed into a combination of human and monster through a random attack, these characters show what it means to be human, and what it means to be something else entirely.

For this list, we're looking at some of the best half-human anime protagonists. We're being generous about what "half" means - some are 1/4 or 1/3, and others are kind of hard to quantify. What's important is that they live as a combination of human and something potentially dangerous and that they're the star of the show. Some of them appear in big-name series like Bleach and Fairy Tail, while others appear in lesser-known anime like Devil's Line and Vampire Hunter D. Be sure to vote up your favorites!

In a last-ditch effort to defeat a dangerous opponent and save his friends, Yuji Itadori eats one of Sukuna's fingers - and ends up becoming a living host to a dangerous cursed being. Everyone expects him to immediately pass away, but he manages to contain Sukuna and utilize his powers. That means it's his job to track down all the other fingers and devour them - it's either that or be executed.

  • Ichigo's mother was a Quincy who endured Hollowification, and his father was a Shinigami who became a human. Though he's initially raised as fully human, he eventually discovers his true heritage and gains access to a whole host of incredible powers. We won't get into all those powers now, but lets just say you do not want to face him when he's in his full Hollow form.

  • Rin Okumura isn't just the son of a demon - he's the son of the king of all demons, Satan himself. Originally raised by an exorcist, he's not exactly in touch with the demonic side of his heritage, and in fact he doesn't even know about it for much of the series. Eventually, his true heritage comes to light, and he starts using the demonic powers that his adoptive father sealed away.

  • At first, Ken Kaneki is a mild-mannered college student who is fully human. That changes when an encounter with Rize Kamishiro leads to an experimental organ transplant that turns him into a "one-eyed ghoul," or a half-human, half-ghoul. Though this ultimately makes him even more powerful than born ghouls, the learning curve is both steep and traumatic.
