The Very Best Halloween Beers

The best Halloween beer and harvest ales include a wide range of domestic and imported beers. Many breweries make spooky seasonal beers to appeal to autumn drinkers, though some offer their delicious frights and flavors year-round. Many of these beers use pumpkin and pumpkin spices like brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, and clove to give the beer a seasonal, warming spice flavor. Others are infernally dark and stout, pairing horror themes with deep flavors that will satisfy even the pickiest beer connoisseur. This list also includes some of the best harvest ales and beers that are brewed from the grain and hop harvests, so be sure to vote for the ones you've tried and found to be a Treat (and vote down the beers you wouldn't use as even the worst Trick).

Some of the most popular favorite Halloween beers include Elysian The Great Pumpkin Imperial Pumpkin Ale (round and warm roasted pumpkin and spices), Boulevard Smokestack Series: Harvest Dance Wheat Wine (a mix of warm fruit and dry oak), Victory Harvest Ale (a malty, hoppy floral) and Ninkasi's "Dawn of the Red," which is horror movie themed but delightfully tropical. The bright notes make it a pleasant choice to alternate with dark brews like the Avery Mephistopheles Stout and its ultra-dark deep chocolatey rum notes. Whether your taste runs more to a lighter, Belgian blend or a dark, hearty stout, there really is a Halloween beer for everyone.

One thing to note about many of these Halloween beers: The alcohol content may be higher than a traditional, domestic beer. Keep that in mind, because once you find the perfect Halloween brew, it's quite easy to overdo things. If you're already going to regret the amount of Halloween candy snuck between your visiting trick-or-treaters, you don't want to add a Halloween hangover too.
