Hawkeye is one of the longest-serving Avengers, and a fan favorite, yet he remains a vastly underrated character among Marvel Comics’ cadre of characters. Clint Barton’s character has been established by a number of classic Hawkeye storylines, many of which focus on his time as a member of the Avengers. However, the best Hawkeye comics are his solo adventures, and it's these Hawkeye story arcs that have most defined the Arching Avenger.

Clint started out as an antagonist to Iron Man, but all of Hawkeye’s greatest adventures have taken place after his turn to superheroics. This face-turn occurred when Clint Barton joined the second edition of the Avengers, and he managed to establish himself as a significant enough character to star in several series of solo Hawkeye comic books. Fans came to appreciate the sheer willpower of a man who went into battle with ancient gods and genocidal robots, armed with nothing more than a bow and arrow.

  • Issues: Hawkeye #1-4

    Writer: Mark Gruenwald

    Artist: Mark Gruenwald

While this miniseries was not Hawkeye’s comic book debut, it was his first outing in a leading role, and it helped to define his character. Within these four issues, Clint Barton meets Bobbi Morse, AKA Mockingbird, falls in love with her, and marries her. He also faces off with Crossifre, Oddball, and Bombshell, further demonstrating Hawkeye’s competency as a lone hero.

  • Issues: House of M #1-8

    Writer: Brian Michael Bendis

    Artist: Olivier Coipel

The megacrossover House of M took place in an alternate reality, brought on by the out-of-control powers of an unhinged Scarlet Witch, as various heroes began to remember the "real" world and fight to bring it back. Things were especially complicated for Hawkeye, who was dead in the mainstream continuity, but found himself resurrected in the Witch’s new reality. When it was all over, Clint Barton found himself permanently back to life.

  • Issues: Avengers #223

    Writer: David Michelinie

    Artist: Greg LaRocque

This one-shot is the source of the famous “Ant-Man riding on Hawkeye’s arrow” scene adapted in Captain America: Civil War. It’s also a super fun story in which the two heroes team up to take on Taskmaster, a shared member of their collective rogues’ gallery and one of the Avengers’ deadliest foes.

  • Issues: Dark Reign: The List: Avengers #1

    Writer: Brian Michael Bendis

    Artist: Mark Djurdjevic

The Dark Reign event in Marvel Comics saw long-time Spider-Man antagonist Norman Osborn put in charge of the new equivalent of SHIELD (named HAMMER), and allowed to form his own team of Dark Avengers. This one-shot tale depicted Clint Barton, using his Ronin persona, attempting to take Osborn out by himself, and paying a heavy price for it.
