Hunter x Hunter doesn't have much in the way of canon romantic relationships, but what it does have is plenty of ships. Whenever fans are asked about what they think the best Hunter x Hunter ships will be, someone usually mentions the Black Whale, an actual boat from the series.
But after that, fans start talking about popular ships like KilluGon - also known as Killua x Gon, and KuraLeo - also known as Kurapika x Leorio. Those who prefer darker ships might vibe with Illumi x Hisoka or Chrollo x Kurapika, while those who like things deep and profound might prefer Meruem x Komugi. Who are your favorite Hunter x Hunter pairings?
Many fans interpret this tragic ship as basically canon. In nearly every scene they have together, Pokkle and Ponzu are showing each other some form of physical affection. When Pokkle is stressed about being responsible for a bunch of people's safety, Ponzu puts her hands over his and tries to reassure him. When the two of them are riding towards NGL, Ponzu leans her face into Pokkle's back.
It's easy to imagine that, had they not met with such grisly fates at the hands of the Chimera Ants, they would have gone on to have a loving and fulfilling relationship.
The relationship between Meruem and Komugi is among the most emotionally affecting parts of the series. As the king of the Chimera Ants, Meruem is an astonishingly powerful being whose entire community is dedicated to his betterment. But he barely understands anything about the rest of the world, and is still working out who he is and what he wants. Meanwhile, Komugi is a blind girl who has been treated terribly by everyone around her. The one thing that brings her joy is Gungi, a game at which she excels.
Though Meruem is great at everything, he can't seem to beat Komugi at Gungi. Interacting with a physically weak human who he still can't best teaches him values he never realized were important. Meanwhile, Komugi feels valued for the first time. Because she's blind, she doesn't fear Meruem's appearance the way a sighted person might, so their friendship is able to flourish.
The two care about each other so deeply that Komugi willingly gives up her life in order to spend Meruem's final moments with him. Their connection could be a deep, platonic friendship, but it could also be romantic love.
This ship doesn't take a whole lot of justification. Gon and Killua are best friends who love each other to pieces and would do anything for each other. Killua has called Gon his “light” and has talked about how lucky he is to have met and befriended Gon. Meanwhile, Gon once said that if he were reincarnated, he'd want to be reincarnated as himself so that he could meet Killua and befriend him all over again.
Whether you see their bond as romantic or platonic, the two clearly care deeply for one another.
In some ways, Illumi and Hisoka are completely different people. Hisoka does whatever he wants at all times, while Illumi is beholden to the demands of his parents. While Hisoka relishes committing atrocities, Illumi is just willing to do whatever he has to in order to achieve his goals.
Hisoka's hedonistic sadism and Illumi's cold pragmatism make them good foils for each other - Illumi reins Hisoka in when his plans don't make sense, and Hisoka tries to get Illumi to loosen up a little. They help each other to achieve their goals, as long as it's mutually beneficial. It's not hard to imagine romance playing a role in their dynamic - especially when Illumi calls an assassination contract he makes with Hisoka a “pre-nup.”
Kurapika x Leorio is among the most popular ships in the entire HxH fandom. At first, the two of them don't get along - they have completely opposing personalities, and both of them see the other as unserious and motivated by the wrong things. But as they get to know each other, they develop a genuine friendship. Though they bicker constantly, they usually make up, and it often seems more like lighthearted teasing than genuine disdain.
There are also a few quasi-canon moments to point to. In the 1999 version of the anime, Leorio calls Kurapika “sunshine” which sounds like a romantic pet name. Also, a scanlation team called NexGear published an April Fool's manga page where the two get married. It's rumored that Togashi drew this himself, but this has not been confirmed.
Hisoka x Machi is among the most popular Machi ships out there, and it's a well-liked one for Hisoka too. It does have a loose canon basis. Hisoka openly flirts with Machi on multiple occasions - at one point, in the manga, he even asks her to sleep with him.
While some people think that Machi's negative reaction puts a damper on the ship, others see her response as less of an outright rejection and more of a tsundere thing. Either way, Machi does seem pretty interested in Hisoka's Bungee Gum.
