The Best Jerry Garcia and JGB Albums of All Time

Updated June 26, 2018 476 votes 169 voters 7.5k views11 items

List RulesStudio albums only - Jerry's live albums deserve a list of their own. We didn't include Old and In the Way or NRPS.

Jerry Garcia wasn't just the frontman of the Grateful Dead, he was also a solo artist who could sell out theaters and arenas throughout his life. Since he's such an influential artist, let’s rank the best Jerry Garcia albums, with the help of your votes. While he was the Dead's unofficial leader for 30 years, Garcia was also a solo artist and the leader of the Jerry Garcia Band (JGB) at the same time. He began his solo career with Garcia (1972) and branched out with other musicians like David Grisman when they recorded The Pizza Tapes (2000).

This list then is of the best Jerry Garcia solo albums, including collaborations. This Jerry Garcia discography is ranked from best to worst, so the top Jerry Garcia and Jerry Garcia Band albums can be found at the top of the list. We haven't included Jerry Garcia live albums or compilations, so everything you see here should only be studio albums. While it's safe to say that Garcia - both in his solo work and with the Dead - was better live than in the studio, he was still quite prolific and it's easier to compare his albums if you separate the live stuff from the studio records.

If you think the greatest Jerry Garcia album isn't high enough on the list, then be sure to vote for it so it receives the credit it deserves. Make sure you don't just vote for critically acclaimed albums; if you have a favorite Jerry solo or JGB album, then vote it up, even if it's not necessarily the most popular.

Many fans do think that Jerry shined brightest in the studio with his more bluegrass material like Cats Under the Stairs (1978) and the Garcia/Grisman (1991) album. This list of popular Jerry Garcia CDs has been voted on by Deadheads and music fans around the world.
