15 Awesome PS4 JRPGs You Should Be Playing

Updated October 13, 2020 743 votes 114 voters 3.5k views15 items

List RulesOnly one game per series (or else this would just be a list of 'Final Fantasy' games).

Looking for a few good JRPGs for PS4Role-playing games and Sony have always had a close relationship, and the PlayStation 4 offers some of the best games in the genre, including amazing platform exclusives, remakes, and remasters.

There's been a lot of debate over what constitutes a JRPG. Sure, the 'J' stands for Japanese, but does that mean every role-playing game made in Japan is a JRPG? Possibly. For this list, however, we're focusing on role-playing games that exude a certain fantastical style (with a heavy emphasis on extremely rich plots and unique character development) that, yes, are obviously made in Japan. From exhilarating action titles like Nier: Automata to focused tactical RPGs like Valkyria Chronicles and the long-awaited Trails of Mana, there's always a title that will fit with every playstyle and gameplay preference. These JRPGs offer great variety as well, with fantasy, science fiction, and historical fantasy all being represented.

Vote up all the must-play JRPGs on the PS4, and vote down all the titles you tried but really couldn't get into.

    Persona 5 Royal

One of the only PS4 exclusives on this list, Persona 5 is a beloved JRPG developed by Atlus and is technically the sixth installment in the Persona series. Set in a modern-day Japanese high school, the game combines social simulation, turn-based combat, and dungeon crawling mechanics to create a unique and memorable experience.

Adored by critics and fans alike, Persona 5's lovable characters and addictive gameplay have made it a modern classic and a must-play JRPG for PlayStation owners. Joker, the game's protagonist, even made it into Super Smash Brothers Ultimate as a downloadable fighter. Released in the States in early 2020, the revamped Royal edition expands upon the original and offers even more content, characters, and social elements.

  • A sequel to a spinoff of the action JRPG series DrakengardNier: Automata is an action JRPG that focuses on a war between alien machines and human-made androids. Although most of the gameplay rests firmly in the action RPG genre with hack-and-slash combat, Nier: Automata also switches things up by including staples of other genres as well, including — but not limited to — shoot 'em up and text adventure mechanics.

As publisher Square Enix didn't expect the game to sell as well as it did, it became a runaway hit selling over 4.5 million copies. If you're looking for a more sci-fi inspired JRPG, this title is definitely one to check out.

  • The most recent entry of the long-running Dragon Quest series, Dragon Quest XI is considered to not only have the best story of the franchise, but to also be one of the best modern JRPG titles. While the game was criticized for having outdated gameplay on release, its narrative full of magic and political intrigue carried it through to a fairly high score with critics, and it went on to sell over 5.5 million copies.

Certain gameplay elements can sometimes be exhausting, but if nothing else, Dragon Age XI proved that players also value engaging worlds and characters, and that those elements can be just as important to some as the gameplay.

It's not a stretch to say that Final Fantasy VII is one of the most popular JRPGs ever made. Released in 1997, it literally redefined the RPG genre. The 2020 remake expands upon the original in almost every conceivable way, giving the characters more personality while also elevating the cyberpunk city of Midgar in ways only modern consoles can.

Instead of the traditional turn-based combat, the Final Fantasy VII Remake utilizes an amazing new live-action fighting system. Add to that the fact that Square Enix basically took what was a 30-minute section from the original game and turned it into a 40+-hour adventure and you have one of the top PS4 JRPGs ever made. Sure, pretty much every Final Fantasy on the PS4 is epic, but FF VII Remake hits all the right spots. It's also the newest, so there's that.
