The 20 Greatest Lawful Good Anime Characters

March 2, 2020 3.9k votes 594 voters 8.9k views20 items

One way to categorize fictional characters is by the character alignment system. Originating in the fantasy tabletop game Dungeons & Dragons, this system includes nine different alignments consisting of combinations of good, neutral, evil, lawful, and chaotic. Most anime characters can be sorted into this system.

Let's take a look at one of these alignments: lawful good. Lawful good characters are those who place a premium on following the rules, and are generally aligned towards doing the right thing. However, while these characters genuinely believe that the right way to approach life is through strict sets of rules - either institutional or personal - they will defy these systems if they're obviously immoral.

One classic example of a lawful good anime character is Jet Black of Cowboy Bebop, whose practical nature anchors the more chaotic members of the Bebop crew. A more recent example is Kinro of Dr. Stone, an Ishigami Village guard can't be easily persuaded into breaking rules.

  • Roy Mustang might be a little more hot-headed than one might expect from a lawful good character, but when you contrast him with characters like Edward Elric and Scar, his alignment becomes clear. Roy prefers to do everything according to the rules of the Amestrian military, and gets angry when other people can't do the same. However, when he notices that the Amestrian military isn't doing the right thing, he's willing to defy it in order to follow his inner morality.

Tanjiro Kamado is an honorable person whose main goal is helping his sister regain her humanity. Rather than go rogue, he chooses to become powerful enough to accomplish this by becoming an officially sanctioned Demon Slayer. Occasionally, though, he will bend the rules a little if it means doing the right thing.

Tenya Iida - 'My Hero Academia'

This young hero-in-training places a premium on following the rules, but he's willing to break them if he thinks it serves a higher good, like protecting his friends. There's one time when he breaks the rules because his emotions get the better of him, but for the most part he's solidly Lawful Good.
