While Jodie Dallas (played by Billy Crystal on the '70s sitcom Soap) was among the first recurring gay characters on television, there have been many others over the years. Television is one of the most powerful and influential mediums in the world, but it wasn’t until 1998 that there was an openly gay male lead character on TV. Will & Grace premiered in the fall of that year, absolutely crushed the ratings, and forever changed the gay culture of television. Since then, there have been dozens of LGBTQ+ television characters. Today, there are even gay and transgender superheroes, adoptive fathers, and much, much more.
