The Most Memorable Quotes From 'Little Women' (2019)

Regardless of whether you're a long-time fan of the story or a newcomer, this is your chance to vote for the best Little Women quotes. Louisa May Alcott's beloved novel has been adapted for the big screen multiple times before, most notably the June Allyson/Elizabeth Taylor version from 1949 and the Winona Ryder/Claire Danes version from 1994. There was even a contemporary version of it as recently as 2018, with Lea Thompson and Sarah Davenport.

This latest iteration was adapted and directed by Greta Gerwig, the actress who made a splash with her Oscar-nominated behind-the-camera debut, Lady Bird. Saoirse Ronan plays Jo March, the aspiring writer who lives with her mother Marmee (Laura Dern) and sisters Amy (Florence Pugh), Meg (Emma Watson), and Beth (Eliza Scanlen). The movie follows their lives and romantic relationships (though whether Jo finally marries is up for debate). Timothee Chalamet co-stars as Laurie, the young man who loves Jo and is loved by Amy, which eventually leads to some awkwardness. Chris Cooper plays Laurie's grandfather, and Meryl Streep is the March girls' aunt.

Despite a period setting, the new Little Women feels contemporary, thanks to some funny lines mixed in with the emotional one liners. Gerwig and the cast ensure that this is a version modern audiences will relate to, as the movie emphasizes timeless themes of sisterhood.

    So Sick Of It

Jo March: Women, they have minds, and they have souls, as well as just hearts. And they’ve got ambition, and they’ve got talent, as well as just beauty. I’m so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for. I’m so sick of it!

    My Dreams Are Different

Meg March: Just because my dreams are different than yours, it doesn’t mean they’re unimportant.

    Money

Amy March (to Theodore ‘Laurie’ Laurence): As a woman, there's no way for me to make my own money. Not enough to earn a living, or to support my family. And if I had my own money, which I don't, that money would belong to my husband the moment we got married. And if we had children, they would be his, not mine. They would be his property, so don't sit there and tell me that marriage isn't an economic proposition, because it is. It may not be for you, but it most certainly is for me.

    Not The Same As Loving

Jo March: Perhaps I was too quick in turning him down. Laurie.

Marmee March: Do you love him?

Jo March: If he asked me again, I think I would say yes. Do you think he'll ask me again?

Marmee March: But do you love him?

Jo March: I care more to be loved. I want to be loved.

Marmee March: That's not the same as loving.
