Look, you watch enough of a show, you get to know the characters. Maybe you even care about them. Maybe you even love them. Or hate them. Or want to read tons of lists about them.

The &quot;dark and troubled past&quot; trope is nothing new. Rarely on a&nbsp;TV show is there not at least one character who&nbsp;has&nbsp;gone through something traumatic in their history. This trauma can range&nbsp;from absent parents to abusive relatives, or&nbsp;from criminal pasts to dead lovers.&nbsp;Some <a href="http://www.ranker.com/list/current-tv-characters-we-love-to-hate/anncasano" target="_blank">TV characters</a> just have it worse than others. But the characters on this list really take the cake. From homelessness, to castration, to&nbsp;accidentally killing their loved ones, these characters have been through so much it&#39;s honestly surprising they&rsquo;re still standing.

For some, the hardship <a href="http://www.ranker.com/list/fictional-children-who-will-be-the-most-messed-up-adults/john-ungaro" target="_blank">started at a really young age</a>, affecting them way into adulthood. Others learn to accept their traumatic past and find a way to move forward, only occasionally revealing glimpses of their emotional scars.&nbsp;All in all, a troubled past can certainly make a character more layered and complex. Plus, a good backstory can push viewers to root for characters they would otherwise despise,&nbsp;and to love&nbsp;their favorites even more.

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Dumb sitcom characters have long been a staple of television comedies. In some cases they became so butchered by their own stupidity to the extent that the character, and sometimes even the show itself, suffered greatly.There's a word for this phenomenon in pop culture-speak: <a href="http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Flanderization">Flanderization</a>. When TV writers take one or two noticeable traits of a character and gradually those one or two traits become the whole character, that's Flanderization at work. The term is named for The Simpsons' Ned Flanders, Homer Simpson's neighbor, who started out the series as an optimistic, devout dad and morphed into a right-wing nut-job who can't see beyond the lens of his own fervent Evangelicalism.And so: behold the sitcom characters who get dumber over time, or in other words, Flanderized to the max.

In some&nbsp;cases, a show featuring an ensemble may just naturally have one character shine brighter than others.&nbsp;Here are a few examples where a show's lead was totally eclipsed by a more interesting side character.

Writing off a character is a big deal for any show (except Game of Thrones; characters on that show drop like flies). Sherlock Holmes is a fictional private detective created by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Referring to himself as a "consulting detective" in the stories, Holmes is known for his proficiency with observation, forensic science, and logical reasoning that borders on the fantastic, which he employs when investigating cases for a wide variety of clients, including Scotland Yard. He is mainly portrayed by Jensen Ackles, with other versions of the character having been portrayed by Hunter Brochu, Ridge Canipe, Nicolai Lawton-Giustra, Brock Kelly and Dylan Everett, and Chad Everett.

Castiel is a fictional character portrayed by Misha Collins on the CW Television Network's American television series Supernatural. An angel, he first appears in the fourth season, and is used to introduce the theme of Christian theology to the series. In the series, Castiel brings Dean Winchester back from Hell and frequently helps him and his brother Sam in their battles with various demons and angels along the way. During his travels with the Winchesters, Castiel develops friendships with both men. As an angel, he possesses a number of supernatural abilities, including the ability to kill demons. Initially, the character demonstrates complete devotion to God and little emotion. However, his interactions and experiences with Dean Winchester and Sam Winchester, as well as certain revelations about God and his fellow angels, have a humanizing effect on him. This, despite the stress and harm it causes his character, allows him to develop an independent will as the series progresses and helps the show address topics related to free will.
Unlike a stereotypical portrayal of television angels, Castiel does not always help people, and is willing to kill innocents if needed.

Lucifer is the King James Version rendering of the Hebrew word הֵילֵל in Isaiah 14:12. This word, transliterated hêlêl or heylel, occurs only once in the Hebrew Bible and according to the KJV-influenced Strong's Concordance means "shining one, morning star". The word Lucifer is taken from the Latin Vulgate, which translates הֵילֵל as lucifer, meaning "the morning star, the planet Venus", or, as an adjective, "light-bringing". The Septuagint renders הֵילֵל in Greek as ἑωσφόρος, a name, literally "bringer of dawn", for the morning star.
Later Christian tradition came to use the Latin word for "morning star", lucifer, as a proper name for the Devil; as he was before his fall. As a result, "'Lucifer' has become a by-word for Satan/the Devil in the Church and in popular literature", as in Dante Alighieri's Inferno and John Milton's Paradise Lost. However, the Latin word never came to be used almost exclusively, as in English, in this way, and was applied to others also, including Christ. The image of a morning star fallen from the sky is generally believed among scholars to have a parallel in Canaanite mythology.

Tyrion Lannister is a fictional character in the A Song of Ice and Fire series of fantasy novels by American author George R. R. Martin, and its television adaptation Game of Thrones. Tyrion was one of a few prominent characters that were not included in 2005's A Feast for Crows, but returned in the next novel A Dance with Dragons. The popularity of the character led Martin and Bantam Books to publish The Wit & Wisdom of Tyrion Lannister, an illustrated collection of Tyrion quotes from the novels, in 2013.

Lucifer is an archangel on The CW series Supernatural. The first fallen angel, he is introduced as a recurring character in the fifth season of the series. From his prison in hell, he orchestrated events not only seen in seasons one through four, but decades prior, to eventually lead to his release by breaking the 66 seals. In the episode "Sin City", he was described as the 'father' and god of the demons, the one who gave them their form and purpose. Azazel reinforced this by referring to him as "My Father" while possessing a priest before slaughtering a convent of nuns. However, in "Abandon All Hope...", Crowley remarks that Lucifer views demons with contempt and his cannon fodder and will destroy them once he has eliminated humanity.

Stefan Salvatore is a fictional character from L. J. Smith's The Vampire Diaries. He is portrayed by Paul Wesley in The Vampire Diaries. Born in 1846, Stefan was turned into a vampire in 1864, at the age of 17. Prior to being turned, he fought over Katherine Pierce with his brother, Damon Salvatore. Initially, Stefan was known for his "dark past" as "The Ripper", as he fed on human blood and killed several people. However, once he grew up and away from his "naive" ways, he started consuming animal blood. In The Vampire Diaries series, Stefan meets Elena Gilbert, a doppelganger who is identical to Katherine. He develops a relationship with her, but soon has competition from his brother, Damon, who also falls in love with Elena. Stefan, who Wesley described as a "drug addict", also had to deal with a blood addiction that caused him to revert to his old ways, but he eventually got this problem under control. Wesley has become popular with viewers as Stefan Salvatore.

Alexander "Alex" Michael Karev, M.D. is a fictional character on the ABC television series Grey's Anatomy, portrayed by actor Justin Chambers. Introduced as a surgical intern at the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital, Karev eventually obtained the position of resident, later becoming a pediatric surgical fellow. His relationships with colleagues Meredith Grey, Cristina Yang, Izzie Stevens, and George O'Malley formed a focal point of the series.

Forsythe Pendleton "Jughead" Jones III is one of the fictional characters created by Bob Montana and John L. Goldwater in Archie Comics who first appeared in the first Archie story, from Pep Comics #22 (December 1941). He is the drummer of the Archies and is son of Forsythe Pendleton Jones II; in one of the early Archie newspaper comic strips, he himself is identified as John Jugworth Jones III (and in one strip, likely due to continuity error, as Forsythe Van Jones). He has a white sheepdog named Hot Dog and a younger sister, Forsythia "Jellybean" Jones. Jughead (shortened to Jug or Juggie) is the best friend of vocalist/guitarist Archie Andrews. Jughead is a smart, sharp-tongued, laid-back, and eccentric high school student. He is obsessed with eating food and in some storylines is asexual. Most see him as being lazy. He can be identified by his long nose, half-closed eyes, "S" sweatshirt, and crown-like button beanie hat, called a whoopee cap. Jughead is portrayed by Cole Sprouse in the live-action CW series, Riverdale.
