What are the best Marriage Story quotes? You get to decide. The screenplay, written by director Noah Baumbach, has received wide acclaim for its insightful look at the divorce process, its emotional one liners, and the way it uses intermittent funny lines to underscore some of the inherent sadness of the subject matter. Simply put, it's one of the most well-written pictures of the year.

Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver play Nicole and Charlie Barber. She's a famous actress, he's a New York theater director. Their marriage has fallen apart, leading Nicole to seek out a divorce lawyer named Nora Fanshaw (Laura Dern). Charlie subsequently has to get one, too. He starts off with the slightly eccentric Bert Spitz (Alan Alda), but switches to the more aggressive Jay Marotta (Ray Liotta) once he realizes his soon-to-be ex-wife's attorney is going to play hardball. Marriage Story follows what happens as Charlie and Nicole attempt to remain civil to each other for the sake of their son, while also taking steps to end their union.

Co-starring in the film are Julie Hagerty and Merrit Wever as Nicole's mother and sister, and Wallace Shawn as one of Charlie's actors.

Bert Spitz: No. No, we don't want to go to court. Courts in California are a disaster, and that's just how we have to think about it. I'm not sure these are my glasses. Where are you living while you're out here?

Charlie Barber: In a hotel right now.

Bert Spitz: A hotel doesn't look good.

    Charlie Barber: To who?

    Bert Spitz: The court.

Charlie Barber: You just said we weren't going to go to court.

Bert Spitz: No, of course. Of course. We have to prepare to go to court hoping we don't go to court.
