Toni Braxton, one of the most famous soul R&B artists of all time, was born in Severn, Maryland. She actually got her start performing with her sisters in a group called The Braxtons, which earned her attention from some music industry big wigs who wanted to take her solo. On the opposite end of the musical genre spectrum, Frank Zappa was born in the state, too. He was a prolific yet controversial artist who initially hailed from Baltimore.
