The latter is one of the most recognized programs in the sport and recently has dominated college football behind some of the best players in school history. The football program started in 1892 and has established itself as one of the most iconic names in sports. Alabama has won 15 national championships and those teams featured some of the best players in Crimson Tide history. Many of Alabama's greatest players went onto achieve success in the NFL, including future Pro Football Hall of Famers like John Hannah, Ozzie Newsome and Derrick Thomas. Surprisingly, with the school's rich history of having a roster full of outstanding players, curiously has only one Heisman Trophy in its cabinet. In 2009, Mark Ingram barely nudged past <a class="edS-cl" href="https://www.ranker.com/list/best-stanford-cardinal-running-backs/ranker-college-football?ref=internalCrossLinking_keyword">Stanford running back</a> Toby Gerhart to take the trophy back to Tuscaloosa.&nbsp;In recent years, a good number of Alabama players have gone on to play in the NFL. Between Marcus Allen, Matt Leinart, Junior Seau, Troy Polamalu, Ronnie Lott, Frank Gifford and so many more, USC sports some of the best college football players ever. Boomer Esiason

Norman Julius "Boomer" Esiason (; born April 17, 1961) is an American retired football quarterback and former network color commentator. During his 14-year career in the National Football League (NFL), he played for the Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets, and Arizona Cardinals. Since retiring from playing, he has worked as a football analyst for ABC, HBO and Westwood One, and currently for CBS Sports on The NFL Today and Showtime's Inside the NFL. He also hosts the morning sports radio program Boomer and Gio on WFAN in New York.

Frank Reich

Frank Michael Reich Jr.  (rye-k) (born December 4, 1961) is an American football coach and former player who is the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League (NFL). Reich played college football at the University of Maryland and was chosen by the Buffalo Bills in the third round of the 1985 NFL draft; he also played for the Carolina Panthers, New York Jets and Detroit Lions. Reich and Bills starting quarterback Jim Kelly formed one of the longest-tenured backup-and-starter tandems, playing together for nine seasons from 1986 to 1994. For a time, Reich had the distinction of having led his team to the biggest comeback victory ever in both the college and NFL ranks, including a 32-point comeback for the Bills in 1993.
Starting as an intern with the Colts in 2006, Reich has also coached with the Arizona Cardinals and San Diego Chargers. As the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017, Reich won Super Bowl LII over the New England Patriots.

Scott McBrien

Scott McBrien (born February 14, 1980) is an American former football quarterback. He played football for several professional and college teams, most notably, the Green Bay Packers in the NFL, and the Maryland Terrapins at the University of Maryland. He is currently a color commentator for Big Ten Network football games.

Neil Kennedy O'Donnell (born July 3, 1966) is a former American football quarterback who played in the National Football League for 14 seasons (1990–2003) with the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Jets, Cincinnati Bengals, and Tennessee Titans. He played college football at Maryland.

Chris Turner

Christopher Evenson Turner (born September 8, 1987) is an American football quarterback. He played quarterback for the Maryland Terrapins at the University of Maryland from 2007 to 2009. Turner began his career at Maryland as a redshirt in 2005 and then served as a reserve quarterback before he earned the starting position.
After a redshirt season in 2005, Turner saw no playing time as the third-string quarterback the following year. In 2007, he replaced the injured starter during the game against 10th-ranked Rutgers and led the Terrapins to an upset victory. After that, he remained as the team's leader for the remainder of the season, and against eighth-ranked Boston College, engineered another upset victory. Turner also helped Maryland secure an appearance in the Emerald Bowl. At the start of the 2008 season, he was relegated to backup status, but soon regained the starting position. That year, he led Maryland in wins over four of their five ranked opponents and to an appearance in the Humanitarian Bowl. He returned as the starter for the 2009 season, but suffered a knee injury and was replaced by Jamarr Robinson.

Shaun Hill

Shaun Christopher Hill (born January 9, 1980) is a former American football quarterback who played 15 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He was signed by the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2002. He played college football at Maryland. Hill also played for the Amsterdam Admirals, San Francisco 49ers, Detroit Lions, and St. Louis Rams.

Dick Shiner

Richard Earl "Dick" Shiner (born July 18, 1942) is a former professional American football quarterback who played in eleven National Football League (NFL) seasons from 1964 to 1974 for six different teams.

Stan Gelbaugh

Stanley Morris Gelbaugh (born December 4, 1962) is a former American football quarterback in the National Football League for the Buffalo Bills, Phoenix Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks. He attained his greatest success in the World League of American Football with the London Monarchs, where he was the league's Offensive Most Valuable Player in its inaugural season. He played college football at the University of Maryland.

Scott Zolak

Scott David Zolak (born December 13, 1967) is a broadcaster and retired American football quarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for nine seasons. Over the course of his career, he played in 55 games for the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins, completed 124 of 248 passes for 1,314 yards, threw eight touchdowns and seven interceptions, and finished his career with a passer rating of 64.8.
A graduate of Ringgold High School and the University of Maryland, Zolak was selected 84th in the 1991 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. He did not play in 1991, but started four games in 1992 and had his most productive season statistically. When Drew Bledsoe was drafted in 1993, Zolak became his backup for the next six seasons. He appeared as a replacement for Bledsoe when he was hurt, but only started three games during this time. He was released at the end of the 1998 season, and signed with the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins in 1999, playing in one game for Miami before retiring. After his retirement, he became a sportscaster and football analyst in the New England area.



Alan Pastrana

Charles Alan Pastrana (born November 20, 1944) is a former American football quarterback. He played college football for the University of Maryland from 1965 to 1968. In 1966, he set the Atlantic Coast Conference record for single-season passing touchdowns with 17. At Maryland, Pastrana also played on the lacrosse team and was named a first-team All-American defenseman in 1966. The Denver Broncos of the National Football League selected Pastrana in the 11th round of the 1969 NFL Draft. He played for Denver for two seasons, including three games as the starting quarterback. After his playing career, Pastrana coached football and lacrosse at Anne Arundel Community College, where he taught as an associate professor, and coached football at the Severn School.

Scott Milanovich

Scott Milanovich (born January 25, 1973) is the quarterbacks coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL). He was previously a quarterback in the National Football League for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, in NFL Europe for the Berlin Thunder, in the XFL for the Los Angeles Xtreme, in the Arena Football League for the Tampa Bay Storm, and in the CFL for the Calgary Stampeders. He was also the head coach for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the offensive coordinator for the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL.
In his first season as a professional head coach, Milanovich led the Argonauts to victory in the 100th Grey Cup.

Robert Hayden Avellini (born August 28, 1953) is a former National Football League quarterback. For most of his career, he played for the Chicago Bears before finishing with the New York Jets. His nickname was "Slow-Mo".

Dan Henning

Daniel Ernest Henning,  (born June 21, 1942) is a former American football player and coach.  A quarterback, he played college football at the College of William & Mary and professional football in 1966 for the San Diego Chargers of the American Football League (AFL).  Henning served as a head coach in the  National Football League (NFL) for the Atlanta Falcons (1983–1986) and the Chargers (1989–1991).  He was the head football coach at Boston College from 1994 to 1996.  Henning then returned to the NFL as an offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills in 1997. After Hall of Fame coach Marv Levy retired, reportedly partially due to his reluctance to fire Henning, Henning left Buffalo.

Michael Peter Tice (born February 2, 1959) is a retired NFL coach and most recently was the offensive line coach for the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League. He was the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings from  2002 to 2005. He was also formerly the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears.

John Kaleo

John Kaleo (born February 5, 1971) is a retired American football quarterback in the Arena Football League (AFL) for the Albany Firebirds (1993), Cleveland Thunderbolts (1994), St. Louis Stampede (1995–1996), Anaheim Piranhas (1997), San Jose SaberCats (1997), New England Sea Wolves (1999), Tampa Bay Storm (2000–2003, 2007), Austin Wranglers (2004), Los Angeles Avengers (2005), and Columbus Destroyers (2006). He won ArenaBowl XVII with the Storm in 2003.  He retired from playing after the 2007 season, and is currently the Offensive Coordinator for the Tampa Bay Storm.  Prior to this role, he was quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at Iona College in New Rochelle, New York.
