    Serta is a company based in Hoffman Estates, Illinois that specializes in making mattresses. It was founded in 1931 by 13 mattress manufacturers who licensed the Serta name; subsequently eight independent licensees acting like a cooperative owned the company. After which, it was controlled and operated as Serta International by its largest licensee, National Bedding Company,. In 2005, two private equity groups teamed up to purchase National Bedding Co.--The Ares Corporate Opportunities Fund, the Los Angeles-based private equity fund of Ares Management; and Teachers’ Private Capital, the private equity arm of the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan. The American company Serta International is a subsidiary of the American company Serta Simmons Holdings LLC. Serta is the largest mattress brand in the United States, and offers three major types of mattresses - gel infused memory foam, natural Talalay latex, and inner-spring. Serta products are used extensively in the lodging industry, with Hilton Worldwide and Wyndham Worldwide among its customers. Serta mattresses are also offered on cable home shopping channel ShopNBC.

    Tempur-Pedic International, Inc. is a manufacturer and distributor of mattresses and pillows made from viscoelastic foam. The company's headquarters is located on the Coldstream Research Campus in Lexington, Kentucky and has manufacturing plants in Duffield, Virginia, Albuquerque, New Mexico and San Salvador, El Salvador. Tempur was originally based on NASA's research to develop a material that would cushion aircraft seats and improve survivability in the event of an accident. The first Tempur-Pedic mattress was introduced by Fagerdala World Foams, a Swedish technical foam firm. The brand was brought to the United States in 1992 and the company Tempur-Pedic, Inc. was founded. Nine distributors of Fagerdala, including Tempur-Pedic, Inc., merged in 1999 to form Tempur World holding company, reformed in 2002 as Tempur-Pedic International Inc. The company went public in 2003. In 2012, Tempur-Pedic and Sealy Corporation announced plans to merge to form "the world's largest bedding company." Tempur-Pedic paid $228.6 million but the two companies will operate separately. Tempur-Pedic won a 2009 Electronic Retailing Association award for direct marketing.
