The latter is one of the most recognized programs in the sport and recently has dominated college football behind some of the best players in school history. The football program started in 1892 and has established itself as one of the most iconic names in sports. Alabama has won 15 national championships and those teams featured some of the best players in Crimson Tide history. Many of Alabama's greatest players went onto achieve success in the NFL, including future Pro Football Hall of Famers like John Hannah, Ozzie Newsome and Derrick Thomas. Surprisingly, with the school's rich history of having a roster full of outstanding players, curiously has only one Heisman Trophy in its cabinet. In 2009, Mark Ingram barely nudged past <a class="edS-cl" href="https://www.ranker.com/list/best-stanford-cardinal-running-backs/ranker-college-football?ref=internalCrossLinking_keyword">Stanford running back</a> Toby Gerhart to take the trophy back to Tuscaloosa.&nbsp;In recent years, a good number of Alabama players have gone on to play in the NFL. Anthony Kevin Dungy ( DUN-jee; born October 6, 1955) is a former professional American football player and coach in the National Football League (NFL). Dungy was head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1996 to 2001, and head coach of the Indianapolis Colts from 2002 to 2008.
Dungy became the first black head coach to win the Super Bowl when his Colts defeated the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI. Dungy set a new NFL record for consecutive playoff appearances by a head coach in 2008 after securing his tenth straight playoff appearance with a win against the Jacksonville Jaguars.Dungy announced his retirement as coach of the Indianapolis Colts on January 12, 2009 following the Colts' loss in the playoffs. The Colts qualified for the playoffs in every season they were coached by Dungy. Since retirement, Dungy has served as an analyst on NBC's Football Night in America. He is also the national spokesman for the fatherhood program All Pro Dad.Dungy was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on February 6, 2016. His selection was controversial, with some commentators wondering if his relatively thin resume, particularly as compared to many other coaches who have not made the Hall of Fame, made him worthy of enshrinement.

Sandy Stephens

Sanford Emory Stephens II (September 21, 1940 – June 6, 2000) was an American college football player and civic leader.  Stephens was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area city of Uniontown, Pennsylvania and is best known for his career as a college football quarterback at the University of Minnesota, where he became one of the first African-American quarterbacks in major college football and the first African American to be named an All-American at quarterback.  He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

Rickey Foggie

Rickey Foggie (born July 15, 1966) is a former gridiron football quarterback. Foggie was the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Golden Gophers for four seasons, before going on to play professionally in the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League. Foggie is currently a head football coach in high school football in Red Wing, Minnesota.

Adam Weber

Adam Weber (born August 3, 1987) is a former American football quarterback. He was signed by the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2011. He played college football at Minnesota, where he finished his career as the Gophers' all-time leader in career passing yards and career touchdown passes.

Asad Abdul-Khaliq

Asad Tajmmal Abdul-Khaliq (born August 4, 1980) is a former American football quarterback. He was the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Golden Gophers football team from 2000 to 2003. The Gophers went 10-3 during his senior year in 2003 with Abdul-Khaliq under center – the first time they won that many games in a season since a 10-1 season in 1905. He also briefly played for the Chicago Rush and the New York Dragons of the AFL.

Bryan Cupito

Bryan Cupito (born June 29, 1984) is a former American football player.  He was the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Golden Gophers for three years, from 2004 to 2006. He graduated from McNicholas High School in Cincinnati, Ohio in 2002 before graduating from the University of Minnesota in 2006.

Cory Sauter

Cory Justin Sauter (born November 21, 1974) is an American football coach and former player. He is currently the head football coach at Southwest Minnesota State University, a position he has held since the 2010 season.  Sauter played college football as a quarterback at the University of Minnesota and professionally in the National Football League (NFL) and NFL Europe.

Michael Louis Hohensee (born February 22, 1961) is a former professional football quarterback who played in the United States Football League, Canadian Football League, National Football League and Arena Football League. He most recently the head coach of the AFL's Portland Thunder. He played college football at the University of Minnesota, and was in the AFL for two seasons, from 1987 to 1988. Hohensee has been a head coach since 1990, beginning at the Washington Commandos. He has served as head coach of eight different arena football franchises, winning ArenaBowl XX with the Chicago Rush in 2006.

Mark Carlson (born June 6, 1963) is a former American football offensive tackle in the National Football League for the Washington Redskins.  He played college football at Southern Connecticut State University. He has three daughters and a wife and they are all living now in North Carolina. He coaches offensive line for Cuthbertson High School in Waxhaw, NC.

Travis Cole

Travis Cole is a former arena football quarterback. He is a 1997 graduate of Lakeridge High School in Lake Oswego, Oregon and played football and baseball for the Pacers. Cole was selected in the 52nd round of the 1997 Major League Baseball Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, but chose to attend Foothill College instead. After completing his juco career, Cole transferred to the University of Minnesota, where he played quarterback on the football team and pitcher on the baseball team. He has since spent time on the rosters of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Arizona Rattlers, and Utah Blaze. He has since retired from football and is a technology consultant for Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington.
