One night, when a little boy can't fall asleep, his grandfather reads him a bed time story. It is the story of Princess Buttercup, and how she falls in love with a farm boy named Westley. When Westley leaves the farm to build a fortune so that the two can marry, he is kidnapped by the Dread Pirate Roberts and presumed dead. Buttercup is forced to be engaged to Prince Humperdinck, heir to the throne. Before they wed, she is kidnapped by three outlaws who were hired by the Prince to kill her. They are now being pursued by Prince Humperdinck and the Man in Black. The Man in Black catches up to them, and defeats the outlaws. Princess Buttercup realizes that it is Westley after accidentally pushing him down a hill. They manage to escape, briefly, before they are captured again by Humperdinck and Count Rugen. They torture Westley until he is "mostly dead," but Miracle Max saves him with a magic pill that brings him back to life, but leaves him partially paralyzed. Meanwhile, Buttercup is being forced to marry Humperdinck, who abridges the ceremony and locks Buttercup in a dungeon. Westley rescues her, and, assuring her that the wedding did not count because she never said, "I do," the two share a passionate kiss. The little boy asks his grandfather to read him the story again.
