Nas's debut studio album, Illmatic, has remained as the prolific rapper's best album since its release in 1994—and some of its best songs live long past its time. While the initial album sales weren't much to brag about, raving reviews would say otherwise. And despite its slow climb in sales, Illmatic went gold two years later and, by 2001, the album had turned platinum with 1,000,000 sales in the US. While it may or may not be one of the best albums of all time, it's certainly a mainstay in hip hop.
Of course, it's the songs that make or break an album, and Illmatic featured what would become a few of Nas's best tracks. Receiving praise from critics for his lyricism, top songs like "It Ain't Hard to Tell" and "The World is Yours", lest we forget the great "One Love", have truly stood the test of time. In short, Illmatic boasts a range of hit tracks and is considered by many as one of the better lyrical hip-hop albums.
