The Best New Fantasy Movies of the Last Few Years

What are the best new fantasy films? This is your chance to decide. The genre has been around since the beginning of cinema, but it has never been as fruitful as it is now. Recent fantasy movies have benefited from advancements in CGI technology, allowing images that were not possible in previous decades. Basically, if someone can imagine it, it can be created for the screen. Consequently, filmmakers have been able to unleash their imaginations to a degree they never could before. Audiences are the obvious beneficiaries of that imagination.

Current fantasy movies come in many forms. Some, like The Age of Adaline and Disney's live-action Cinderella, are romantic fantasies. More traditional "hero's journey" fantasies, like the Star Wars installments The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, are accounted for, too. A few are aimed at family audiences, like The BFG and Pete's Dragon, while others target a slightly older audience. Guillermo Del Toro's R-rated The Shape of Water is a prime example. You'll also find fantasies with a comic spin and a couple that have a heavy dose of action.
