Whether you're a regular manga reader or someone just dipping their toes into its world, there's nothing more exciting than reading a newly released series. Let's count down some of the best new manga releases of 2021.
Shonen Jump had a busy year - excellent and popular new titles like Choujin X and Ayashimon have gotten fans hyped over 2021. But the world of manga is wider than just shonen. There are also autobiographical manga like A Life Turned Upside Down: My Dad's an Alcoholic, romance like Restart After Coming Back Home, and much more. No matter what vibe you're feeling, there's a fantastic new manga release to suit your tastes.
Some of these manga were originally published a little earlier than 2021, but were first translated into English this year. Others debuted in Japan in 2021, and were simultaneously translated into other languages. A few have yet to be translated. We'll let you know which is which.
When their town was destroyed by a kaiju monster, Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro promise to join the Japanese Defense Force and fight kaiju together. But while Mina manages to become the commander of the Defense Force's Third Unit, Kafka keeps failing the exams and ends up on the cleanup crew. One day, when he's cleaning up kaiju body parts, he accidentally swallows a small talking monster, granting him the ability to turn into a kaiju himself.
Momo Ayase is absolutely certain that ghosts exist, but she's not convinced about aliens. Her classmate Okarun has the exact opposite stance. The two agree to separately visit the places where both aliens and ghosts are known to show up in the hopes of discovering who is right and who is wrong. They soon find out that both aliens and ghosts exist!
Maruo Kaido is a manga fan who wishes that his life were more like the series he adores. To accomplish this, he works out incessantly, getting so strong that by the age of 7 he could bust rocks. When an ayashimon (yokai) recruits him into their yakuza organization after he saves their life, it seems like he might get to have the manga-like adventure that he's always dreamed of.
Choujin X is a new manga from Sui Ishida, the creator of Tokyo Ghoul.
Tokio Kurohara and Azuma Higashi are high school students who are constantly being dragged into unwanted fights. Azuma is usually able to handle their foes, but one day they encounter someone they can't take down. As a last resort, they inject a substance that turns them into Choujin - supernatural beings.
Azuma can hide his new identity, but Tokio can't - he's literally sprouted a beak. Unfortunately, there are plenty of people who aren't too thrilled about their transformations.

Tsugai of the Underworld

The creator of Fullmetal Alchemist is back with a brand new manga. The story centers around a young boy named Yuru who can usually be found hunting birds and enjoying nature. His twin sister Asa is unfortunately confined to prison, not because she did anything wrong but because the two of them are believed to be bad luck, since one was born during the day and the other was born at night. One day, their village is targeted by a group wielding a supernatural power called Tsugai. One of its members claims to be Asa - and she's looking for Yuru.
So far, there's no information about when this manga will be translated, but considering how well-loved Arakawa's other work is in the West, we have to imagine that it will be soon.
Look Back is a one-shot manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of Chainsaw Man. Fourth-grader Ayumu Fujino is thought to be one of the best manga artists in her class. One day, she's asked to give up one of her spots in the school newspaper to a student who rarely attends school, Kyomoto. Kyomoto's work recieves high praise, which deeply annoys Fujimoto - why should someone who barely goes to school do better than her? She tries to compete and improve, but by sixth grade, she's too frustrated with manga to continue.
Her dealings with Kyomoto seem finished until the day that she's asked to deliver her graduation certificate - and meet her for the first time. That meeting sparks a chain of events from which there is no coming back.
