A list of the best New Orleans Pelicans of all time. Prior to the 2013-14 season, the New Orleans franchise changed its name from the Hornets, which it had been known as since its inception in 1988-89. It took a few years for the franchise to find its footing, but by the early 1990s, the Hornets were one of the most exciting teams in the league. Behind star players like Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning, the Hornets featured some of the best young players in the NBA. But like many NBA teams, the Hornets had to trade its best players, only to replace with other great players like Glen Rice and Anthony Mason. It's rare that a team is able to trade two of its <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/the-top-nba-players-of-all-time">best players of all time</a> for two more great players. But in those early years, the Hornets were successfully able to do that.The NBA Draft has been kind to the franchise as well. In addition to Johnson and Mourning, the team has drafted some of the top players at their positions, like Baron Davis and Chris Paul. Superstar point guards are hard to come by, yet New Orleans managed to snare two of them. Paul is considered one of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/top-10-current-nba-players">best current NBA players</a> and his presence on the Hornets made them a team to watch.While many of the players on this are from the team's Hornets days, there are a few future Pelicans players whose futures are bright. Anthony Davis

Anthony Marshon Davis Jr. (born March 11, 1993) is an American professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He plays the power forward and center positions. Davis was selected first overall in the 2012 NBA draft by New Orleans, is a six-time NBA All-Star, and has been named to three All-NBA First Teams and three NBA All-Defensive Teams. He also earned a gold medal playing with Team USA at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Davis played one season of college basketball for the University of Kentucky, when he was first team All-American and the Consensus National Player of the Year. He also won the USBWA National Freshman of the Year, NABC Defensive Player of the Year and the Pete Newell Big Man Award. Davis led the NCAA in blocks and set Southeastern Conference and NCAA Division I freshman single-season blocked shots records. He led Kentucky to a National Championship and was named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA tournament.
Davis left college for the NBA after one season and was drafted by the New Orleans Pelicans, then known as the New Orleans Hornets, and was selected that summer to play for the Team USA in the 2012 Olympics. After his rookie season, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. The next season, he became an All-Star for the first time and led the NBA in blocked shots per game. He has since become a six-time All-Star and the youngest player to score at least 59 points in an NBA game. In 2017, he was named the recipient of the NBA All-Star Game MVP Award after setting an All-Star Game scoring record of 52 points en route.

David West

David Moorer West (born August 29, 1980) is an American retired professional basketball player who played 15 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Xavier Musketeers, earning national college player of the year honors from the Associated Press (AP) and United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) as a senior in 2003. West is a two-time NBA All-Star (2008 and 2009) and a two-time NBA champion (2017 and 2018).

Carl Landry

Carl Christopher Landry (born September 19, 1983) is an American professional basketball player for the Hiroshima Dragonflies of the B.League . The 6'9", all-conference power forward played college basketball for the Purdue Boilermakers from 2004 to 2007. He is the older brother of Shenita Landry and Marcus Landry.

Collier "P. J." Brown Jr. (born October 14, 1969) is a retired American professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The 6 ft 11 in (2.11 m), 239 lb (108 kg) center/power forward was selected out of Louisiana Tech University by the New Jersey Nets with the 29th overall pick in the 1992 NBA draft, but began his NBA career only in the 1993–94 season. He has been voted into the NBA All-Defensive Second Team three times, in 1997, 1999 and 2001, and won the NBA Sportsmanship Award in 2004. He attended Winnfield Senior High School in Winnfield, Louisiana, where he played for the Winnfield Tigers, and has played professionally for the Nets, Miami Heat, Charlotte Hornets, New Orleans Hornets, Chicago Bulls and Boston Celtics.

Zion Williamson

Zion Lateef Williamson (born July 6, 2000) is an American professional basketball player for the New Orleans Pelicans of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Listed at 6 ft 7 in (2.01 m) and 285 pounds (129 kg), he plays the small forward and power forward positions. Following a dominant freshman-year stint with the Duke Blue Devils, he was selected by the Pelicans first overall in the 2019 NBA Draft.
Born in Salisbury, North Carolina, Williamson attended Spartanburg Day School, where he was a consensus five-star recruit and was ranked among the top five players in the 2018 class. He led his team to three straight state championships and earned South Carolina Mr. Basketball recognition in his senior season. Williamson also left high school as a McDonald's All-American, runner-up for Mr. Basketball USA, and USA Today All-USA first team honoree. In high school, he drew national attention for his slam dunks.

Omri Casspi

Omri Moshe Casspi (Hebrew: עומרי משה כספי‎, born June 22, 1988) is an Israeli professional basketball player for Maccabi Tel Aviv of the Israeli Premier League and EuroLeague. He plays the small forward position, but can play also at the power forward position.
Casspi was drafted 23rd overall in the 2009 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings, making him the first Israeli to be selected in the first round of an NBA draft. With his Kings debut in 2009, Casspi became the first Israeli to play in an NBA game. As a rookie, Casspi was chosen to participate in the NBA All-Star Weekend Rookie Challenge. The Cleveland Cavaliers traded for him in June 2011, and he signed with the Houston Rockets in July 2013. In July 2014, Casspi was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans as part of a three-team trade, but was later waived. He then returned to Sacramento prior to the 2014–15 season. In February 2017, he was traded to the Pelicans alongside DeMarcus Cousins, and signed with the Warriors during the offseason. Waived after an April injury, he signed with Memphis in July 2018.

James Mikely Mantell Posey Jr. (born January 13, 1977) is an American former professional basketball player. He played as a small forward for several teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was a former assistant coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the NBA.

Al-Farouq Aminu

Al-Farouq Ajiede Aminu (born September 21, 1990) is an American-Nigerian professional basketball player for the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He plays internationally with the Nigeria national basketball team. Aminu was selected by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2010 NBA draft with the eighth overall pick, and has also played for the New Orleans Pelicans, Dallas Mavericks and Portland Trail Blazers.

Gustavo Alfonso Ayón Aguirre (born April 1, 1985) is a Mexican professional basketball player for Zenit Saint Petersburg of the VTB United League and the EuroLeague. He also represents the senior Mexican national basketball team in international national team competitions. Standing at a height of 6 ft 10 in (2.08 m), he plays at the center and power forward positions. Ayon is a two−time All-EuroLeague Second Team selection.

Dante Cunningham (born April 22, 1987) is an American professional basketball player who was drafted in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2009 NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers of the NBA. Cunningham, a power forward, attended Villanova University in Pennsylvania.

Luke Babbitt

Luke Robert Babbitt (born June 20, 1989) is an American professional basketball player who last played for the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the University of Nevada for two seasons before declaring for the 2010 NBA draft following his sophomore year. He was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the 16th overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft, then traded to the Portland Trail Blazers.

DaJuan Michael Summers (born January 24, 1988) is an American professional basketball player for Levallois Metropolitans of the LNB Pro A. He played college basketball at Georgetown University. In the 2009 NBA draft, he was drafted in the 2nd round (35th overall) by the Detroit Pistons.

Chris Andersen

Christopher Claus Andersen (born July 7, 1978) is an American  professional basketball player for Power In The Big 3 League. 
Nicknamed "Birdman", Andersen was born in Long Beach, California, grew up in Iola, Texas, and played one year at Blinn College. Andersen began his professional career in the Chinese Basketball Association and the American minor leagues. He then played in the NBA for the Denver Nuggets and the New Orleans Hornets. He received a two-year ban from the NBA in 2006 for violating the league's drug policy, but was reinstated on March 4, 2008, and re-signed with the Hornets the next day. He returned to Denver later in 2008, and remained with the team until 2012. He signed with the Miami Heat in January 2013 and won a championship with them that same year. He and Oliver Lafayette are the only Blinn students to ever play in the NBA. He now plays for Power in the Big3 league.
