Prior to the 2013-14 season, the New Orleans franchise changed its name from the Hornets, which it had been known as since its inception in 1988-89. It took a few years for the franchise to find its footing, but by the early 1990s, the Hornets were one of the most exciting teams in the league. Behind star players like Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning, the Hornets featured some of the best young players in the NBA. But like many NBA teams, the Hornets had to trade its best players, only to replace with other great players like Glen Rice and Anthony Mason. It's rare that a team is able to trade two of its <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/the-top-nba-players-of-all-time">best players of all time</a> for two more great players. But in those early years, the Hornets were successfully able to do that.The NBA Draft has been kind to the franchise as well. In addition to Johnson and Mourning, the team has drafted some of the top players at their positions, like Baron Davis and Chris Paul. Superstar point guards are hard to come by, yet New Orleans managed to snare two of them. Paul is considered one of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/top-10-current-nba-players">best current NBA players</a> and his presence on the Hornets made them a team to watch.While many of the players on this are from the team's Hornets days, there are a few future Pelicans players whose futures are bright. Brandon Ingram

Brandon Xavier Ingram (born September 2, 1997) is an American professional basketball player for the New Orleans Pelicans of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the second overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft, and was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. Ingram had a successful high school career in North Carolina, where he won state titles each of his four years of high school and was named North Carolina's Mr. Basketball. He played one season of college basketball for the Duke Blue Devils, where he was named Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year. After the season, Ingram decided to forego his remaining college eligibility and declared for the NBA draft. He played three seasons with the Lakers before being traded to New Orleans in 2019 in a package for Anthony Davis.

Peja Stojaković

Predrag Stojaković (Serbian Cyrillic: Предраг Стојаковић, pronounced [ˌprêdraːɡ ˈstôjaːkoʋit͜ɕ]; born June 9, 1977), also known by his nickname Peja (pronounced [ˈpêd͡ʑa]), is a Serbian-Greek professional basketball executive and former player. He is currently the director of player personnel and development for the Sacramento Kings.Standing at 6 ft 10 (2.08 m), Stojaković played mostly at the small forward position. He won the NBA Three-point shootout two times, and was the first European-born player to win one of the All-Star Weekend competitions. Stojaković made 1,760 three-point field goals in his career which ranked 10th all-time at the point of his retirement.
After starting in Crvena zvezda and while playing for PAOK, Stojaković was drafted fourteenth overall by the Sacramento Kings in the 1996 NBA draft. In the NBA, he had a breakthrough season in 2000–01 following two seasons on the bench, averaging 20.4 points and 5.8 rebounds while shooting .400 from three-point range in his first season as a starter. He finished second in voting for the 2001 Most Improved Player Award. A three-time All-star and a member of the 2004 All-NBA Second Team, Stojaković enjoyed success with the Kings reaching the 2002 Western Conference Finals. He also played for the Indiana Pacers, New Orleans Hornets and Toronto Raptors.  Stojaković won an NBA Championship in 2011 as a member of the Dallas Mavericks.
Stojaković led the Yugoslavian national team to gold medals in the 2001 FIBA EuroBasket and the 2002 FIBA World Championship. Often considered to be one of the greatest European basketball players ever, Peja was named the Euroscar Basketball Player of the Year by the Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport and the Mister Europa Player of the Year twice by the Italian sports magazine Superbasket.
On December 19, 2011, he announced his retirement from basketball. On December 16, 2014, the Sacramento Kings retired his number.

Trevor Ariza

Trevor Anthony Ariza (born June 30, 1985) is an American professional basketball player for the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He won an NBA championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2009.  He played college basketball for one season with the UCLA Bruins before being selected in the second round of the 2004 NBA draft by the New York Knicks.

James Ennis

James Alfred Ennis III (born July 1, 1990) is an American professional basketball player for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played two years of Division 1 college basketball for Long Beach State, where he became a standout as a senior, earning Big West Player of the Year honors. After being selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the second round of the 2013 NBA draft, Ennis moved to Australia and joined the Perth Wildcats. There he won an NBL championship and became a Perth favorite.

Luke Babbitt

Luke Robert Babbitt (born June 20, 1989) is an American professional basketball player who last played for the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the University of Nevada for two seasons before declaring for the 2010 NBA draft following his sophomore year. He was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the 16th overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft, then traded to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Lance Stephenson

Lance Stephenson Jr. (born September 5, 1990) is an American professional basketball player for the Liaoning Flying Leopards of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). He attended Lincoln High School in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn, where he was named Mr. New York Basketball after his senior year and appeared in the 2009 McDonald's All-American Game. He was drafted with the 40th overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft by the Indiana Pacers and played for the franchise until signing with the Charlotte Hornets in 2014. After three years splitting time with the Hornets, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, New Orleans Pelicans and Minnesota Timberwolves, Stephenson returned to the Pacers in 2017. In 2018, he joined the Los Angeles Lakers.

Quincy Pondexter

Quincy Coe Pondexter (born March 10, 1988) is an American professional basketball player. He played high school basketball in Fresno, California at San Joaquin Memorial High School where his father Roscoe and uncle Clifton Pondexter were All-American basketball players themselves and continued their basketball skills at the professional levels. Pondexter played four years of college basketball at the University of Washington. At the end of his senior season, he earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors and an All-American honorable mention by the Associated Press.

Jamal Mashburn

Jamal Mashburn (born November 29, 1972) is a retired American professional basketball player. Nicknamed the "Monster Mash," Mashburn was a prolific scorer as a small forward in his 12 seasons in the league, with a career scoring average of 19.1 points per game.

Tyreke Evans

Tyreke Jamir Evans (born September 19, 1989) is an American professional basketball player. After playing college basketball for the Memphis Tigers, he was selected with the fourth overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings. Evans went on to win the 2010 NBA Rookie of the Year Award. He was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans in 2013 before being traded back to the Kings in 2017. After susessive stints with the Memphis Grizzlies and Indiana Pacers, Evans, who would have become a free agent at the end of the 2019 season, was dismissed and disqualified from the NBA in May for violating the terms of the league's anti-drug program.

Dante Cunningham

Dante Cunningham (born April 22, 1987) is an American professional basketball player who was drafted in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2009 NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers of the NBA. Cunningham, a power forward, attended Villanova University in Pennsylvania.

James Mikely Mantell Posey Jr. (born January 13, 1977) is an American former professional basketball player. He played as a small forward for several teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was a former assistant coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the NBA.

Desmond Tremaine Mason (born October 11, 1977) is an American former professional basketball player, and painter. He played as a shooting guard and small forward. Mason has also found success as an artist, working in a variety of media. Currently, he is an NBA Analyst and Sports radio co-host for The Franchise, a sports talk station in Oklahoma City.

Al-Farouq Aminu

Al-Farouq Ajiede Aminu (born September 21, 1990) is an American-Nigerian professional basketball player for the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He plays internationally with the Nigeria national basketball team. Aminu was selected by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2010 NBA draft with the eighth overall pick, and has also played for the New Orleans Pelicans, Dallas Mavericks and Portland Trail Blazers.



Marco Belinelli

Marco Stefano Belinelli (Italian pronunciation: [ˈmarko beliˈnɛlli]; born 25 March 1986) is an Italian professional basketball player for the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was selected 18th overall in the 2007 NBA draft by the Golden State Warriors. In 2014, he won the NBA championship with the San Antonio Spurs, becoming the first Italian player to do so. He won the NBA Three-Point Shootout during the 2014 NBA All-Star Weekend. He played in the 2007, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017 editions of the FIBA EuroBasket and the 2006 FIBA World Championship with the Italian national basketball team.

Rasual Butler

Rasual Butler (May 23, 1979 – January 31, 2018) was an American professional basketball player. In his 14-year National Basketball Association (NBA) career, he played for the Miami Heat, New Orleans Hornets, Los Angeles Clippers, Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors, Indiana Pacers, Washington Wizards and San Antonio Spurs. He was born in Philadelphia, and raised in the Point Breeze area of South Philadelphia. After playing college basketball at La Salle, he was drafted in second round of the 2002 NBA draft by the Heat.

E'Twaun Moore

E'Twaun Donte Moore (born February 25, 1989) is an American professional basketball player for the New Orleans Pelicans of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the 2011 NBA draft and also played for the Orlando Magic after playing college basketball at Purdue University. In high school, he led East Chicago's Central High School to an IHSAA state championship.
He was a Second-Team All-Big Ten selection as both a freshman and a sophomore and a First-Team All-Big Ten selection as a junior and a senior for Purdue Boilermakers men's basketball. He was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, as well as a Second-Team Academic All-American selection at the conclusion of the 2009–10 Big Ten Conference regular season. As a junior, as well, he was named a Yahoo! Sports Third-Team All-American and an AP Honorable Mention All-American. He repeated as an AP honorable mention selection and was named NABC Third Team-All America as a senior.

J. R. Smith

Earl Joseph "J. R." Smith III (born September 9, 1985) is an American professional basketball player who last played for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played high school basketball at New Jersey basketball powerhouse Saint Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark. He entered the NBA out of high school after being selected in the first round of the 2004 NBA draft with the 18th overall pick by the New Orleans Hornets. He has also played for the Denver Nuggets and New York Knicks, as well as for the Zhejiang Golden Bulls of the Chinese Basketball Association. In 2016, Smith helped the Cavaliers win the NBA championship

Boštjan "Boki" Nachbar (born July 3, 1980) is a Slovenian former professional basketball player. A 2.06 m forward, he spent most of his career between the NBA and the EuroLeague. Nachbar helped lead the Slovenian national basketball team to a fourth place at EuroBasket 2009.

James Southerland III is an American professional basketball player who currently plays for Limoges CSP of the LNB Pro A. The 6'8" forward, an undrafted rookie from Syracuse University, posted career-best averages in scoring, rebounding and three-point shooting as a senior in 2012–13.

Omri Casspi

Omri Moshe Casspi (Hebrew: עומרי משה כספי‎, born June 22, 1988) is an Israeli professional basketball player for Maccabi Tel Aviv of the Israeli Premier League and EuroLeague. He plays the small forward position, but can play also at the power forward position.
Casspi was drafted 23rd overall in the 2009 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings, making him the first Israeli to be selected in the first round of an NBA draft. With his Kings debut in 2009, Casspi became the first Israeli to play in an NBA game. As a rookie, Casspi was chosen to participate in the NBA All-Star Weekend Rookie Challenge. The Cleveland Cavaliers traded for him in June 2011, and he signed with the Houston Rockets in July 2013. In July 2014, Casspi was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans as part of a three-team trade, but was later waived. He then returned to Sacramento prior to the 2014–15 season. In February 2017, he was traded to the Pelicans alongside DeMarcus Cousins, and signed with the Warriors during the offseason. Waived after an April injury, he signed with Memphis in July 2018.

Morris Russell Peterson Jr. (born August 26, 1977) is an American retired professional basketball player. He is also a cousin of former basketball player of the Indiana Pacers and the New York Knicks, Jonathan Bender.

Solomon Hill

Solomon Jamar Hill (born March 18, 1991) is an American professional basketball player for the New Orleans Pelicans of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the University of Arizona.

Bonzi Wells

Gawen DeAngelo "Bonzi" Wells (born September 28, 1976) is an American former professional basketball player. He played college basketball at Ball State University and was drafted in the 1998 NBA Draft. In the NBA, Wells played for five teams from 1998 to 2008: the Portland Trail Blazers, Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets, and New Orleans Hornets.
