A list of the best New Orleans Saints of all time. For many years, the New Orleans Saints were the laughingstock of the NFL. Their fans wore invented wearing paperbags over their faces at games to conceal their identity because those teams were so bad. One of the only players worth watching in those bad old days was Archie Manning. Superstar quarterback, Manning spent most of his days in New Orleans running for his life behind porous offensive lines and had little talent at the skill position. It took the Saints nearly 20 years to make the playoffs. Behind the intimidating Dome Patrol linebacking crew, which was featured some of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/top-25-greatest-linebackers-of-all-time">best linebackers of all time</a>, the Saints went to the playoffs four times in six seasons.It took until Drew Brees arrived in 2006 for the Saints franchise to finally hit their stride. Behind one of the <a href="http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/top-nfl-quarterbacks-2012">best quarterbacks in the NFL</a>, the Saints reached the NFC Championship Game that year. The team's fortunes improved as they slowly added the greatest players in Saints history. Finally, in 2009, one of the best Saints teams ever captured something that many thought wasn't possible: a Super Bowl title. Behind Brees, wide receiver Marques Colston and a high-flying offense, the Saints defeated the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV. The Saints offense is one of the best in the NFL and with up-and-coming stars like tight end Jimmy Graham, New Orleans looks to be unstoppable for the foreseeable future.This is the list of the best New Orleans Saints of all time. Alvin Kamara

Alvin Mentian Kamara (born July 25, 1995) is an American football running back for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL). He played high school football for the Blue Devils football team. As a junior in 2011, he rushed for 1,300 yards with 17 touchdowns. As a senior in 2012, he rushed for 2,264 yards with 26 touchdowns, and he had 22 receptions for 286 yards and five touchdowns and led his high school to its first state championship. Following the conclusion of the 2016 college season, Kamara decided to forgo his redshirt senior season and enter the 2017 NFL Draft. In his two seasons as a Volunteer, he started in only eight of 24 games due to sharing the backfield with Jalen Hurd, but he amassed almost 2,000 yards from scrimmage and averaged a touchdown per game.

Deuce McAllister

Dulymus Jenod "Deuce" McAllister (born December 27, 1978) is a former American football running back who played eight seasons for the New Orleans Saints in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for Ole Miss and was drafted by the Saints in the first round of the 2001 NFL Draft. McAllister was selected to two Pro Bowls in his career and won Super Bowl XLIV in 2009. In 2010, he lives in Metairie, Louisiana.He is currently the color commentator for the Saints on radio flagship WWL (AM) having taken over from Hokie Gajan in June 2016. McAllister also serves as an athletic consultant for St. Martin's Episcopal School.

Mark Ingram, Jr.

Marcus Valentino Ingram Jr. (born December 21, 1989) is an American football running back for the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the University of Alabama, won the Heisman Trophy, and was a member of a national championship team. He was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. 
During his sophomore college season in 2009, Ingram won the first Heisman Trophy ever awarded to an Alabama Crimson Tide player, set the Crimson Tide's single-season rushing record with 1,658 yards, was recognized as a unanimous All-American, and helped lead the Tide to an undefeated 14–0 season and the 2010 BCS National Championship. Since entering the NFL in 2011, Ingram has earned two Pro Bowl selections (2014 and 2017). In 2018, he received a four-game suspension after testing positive for performance enhancing drugs.

Reggie Bush

Reginald Alfred Bush Jr. (born March 2, 1985) is a former American football running back. He played college football at USC, where he earned consensus All-American honors twice and won the Heisman Trophy (later forfeited) as the most outstanding player in the nation. He was drafted by the New Orleans Saints second overall in the 2006 NFL Draft. While with the Saints, Bush was named an All-Pro in 2008 and won Super Bowl XLIV in 2010 over the Indianapolis Colts. He also played for the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions, and San Francisco 49ers.
Bush also won the 2005 Doak Walker and Walter Camp awards. However, allegations that
he received improper benefits were central to an NCAA investigation of the USC football program that led to severe NCAA sanctions against USC, including a two-year postseason ban and the vacating of the 2004 national championship. As a result, Bush voluntarily forfeited his Heisman Trophy.

Pierre Thomas

Charles Pierre Thomas Jr. (born December 18, 1984) is a former American football running back. He played college football at Illinois. He was signed by the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2007.  Thomas developed into an all-around threat as a runner, pass catcher, blocker, and special teams player. He led the Saints in rushing yards in 2008 and 2009 and again in 2013, when he also led all NFL running backs in receiving yards. He became known for his excellence in executing the screen pass; it was a screen pass on which he scored the Saints' first touchdown in their 31-17 win over Indianapolis in Super Bowl XLIV, two weeks after he had scored two touchdowns in the Saints' 2009 NFC Championship game victory.

Darren Sproles

Darren Lee Sproles (born June 20, 1983) is an American football player who is a running back and return specialist for the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Kansas State, where he is the all-time leading rusher, and was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft. 
Sproles was named as a kick returner on the Chargers 50th Anniversary Team. He joined the New Orleans Saints in free agency before the 2011 season, and broke the NFL record for most single-season all-purpose yardage the same year, with 2,696 yards. During that season, he set career highs with 603 yards rushing (6.9 yards per carry) and 710 yards receiving and a combined total of 9 touchdowns. Sproles is the first player in NFL history with 2,200+ all purpose yards in 4 different seasons (2008–2011). Sproles is currently ranked 6th in career all-purpose yards in NFL history (19,020 yards).

Ricky Williams

Errick Lynne "Ricky" Williams Jr. (born May 21, 1977) is an American former football running back who played 12 seasons in the National Football League (NFL) and one season in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played college football for the University of Texas, where he was a two-time All-America and won the Heisman Trophy. Williams was drafted by the New Orleans Saints fifth overall in the 1999 NFL Draft and spent three seasons with the team before he was traded to the Miami Dolphins in 2002. He played for the Dolphins for two seasons, and retired for the first time from football in 2004. Due to his suspension from the NFL in 2006, he played for the Toronto Argonauts that year. Williams re-joined the Dolphins in 2007 and played with them until 2010, and spent the 2011 season with the Baltimore Ravens. He was formerly an assistant football coach at the University of the Incarnate Word and is currently a football analyst for ESPN's Longhorn Network.  In 2015, Williams was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Dalton Hilliard (born January 21, 1964) is a former professional American football running back for the New Orleans Saints from 1986-1993. He played his entire National Football League (NFL) career for the Saints and was a Pro Bowl selection in 1989. He is a member of the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame.

Earl Campbell

Earl Christian Campbell (born March 29, 1955) is a former American football running back who played professionally in the National Football League (NFL) for the Houston Oilers and New Orleans Saints. Known for his aggressive, punishing running style and ability to break tackles, Campbell gained recognition as one of the best power running backs in NFL history.
He played college football for the University of Texas, where he won the Heisman Trophy and earned unanimous All-America honors in his senior season, as well as numerous other accolades. He was drafted first overall by the Oilers in 1978 and had an immediate impact in the league, earning NFL Rookie of the Year honors. Earl Campbell was named the NFL's Offensive Player of the Year in each of his first three seasons, during which he averaged nearly 1,700 rushing yards per season. He won the AP NFL Most Valuable Player Award in 1979 after leading the league in rushing yards and touchdowns.
With head coach Bum Phillips, Campbell's emergence in Houston coincided with the Luv Ya Blue era, a period of sustained success in which the Oilers made three straight playoff appearances. Campbell became the centerpiece of Houston's offense during the late 1970s and early 1980s. He was traded to the Saints six games into the 1984 season, where he spent his final season and a half before retiring. Campbell was inducted into both the College Football Hall of Fame (1990) and Pro Football Hall of Fame (1991).  His jersey number is retired by the University of Texas and the Tennessee Titans.

George Rogers

George Washington Rogers (born December 8, 1958) is a former American college and professional football player who was a running back in the National Football League (NFL) for seven seasons during the 1980s.  Rogers played college football for the University of South Carolina, earned All-America honors, and won the 1980 Heisman Trophy.  He was the first overall pick in the 1981 NFL Draft, and he played professionally for the New Orleans Saints and Washington Redskins of the NFL.  As a professional, Rogers rushed for over 7,000 yards.

Chuck Muncie

Harry Vance "Chuck" Muncie (March 17, 1953 − May 13, 2013) was an American football running back who played for the New Orleans Saints and San Diego Chargers in the National Football League (NFL) from 1976 to 1984. He was selected to the Pro Bowl three times, and tied the then-NFL season record for rushing touchdowns in 1981.
Muncie played college football for the California Golden Bears, setting numerous school records.  In his senior year, he was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy, given annually to the most outstanding college football player. Muncie was drafted by New Orleans in the first round in the 1976 NFL Draft with the third overall pick. He became the first member of the Saints to be named to a Pro Bowl, and he was their first player to rush for 1,000 yards. He was traded to San Diego in 1980, starring in their high-scoring offense known as Air Coryell while being named to two additional Pro Bowls.
Muncie was considered one of the best running backs of his era until cocaine problems forced him into retirement. His drug problems eventually landed him in prison.  Afterwards, he turned his life around by helping others through mentoring programs. He founded the Chuck Muncie Youth Foundation.

Rueben Mayes

Rueben Mayes (born June 6, 1963) is a former American football running back from Canada who played professionally in the National Football League (NFL) from 1986 to 1993. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame for his contributions while playing for the Washington State Cougars.

Mike Strachan

Michael David Strachan (born May 24, 1953) is a former professional American football running back in the National Football League.Strachan played for Jackson High School in Miami and attended Iowa State University on an athletic scholarship where he was named All Big 8 3 times. Selected by the New Orleans Saints in the 9th round of the NFL Draft, he played six seasons for them from 1975 to 1980. Affectionately known as "The Hound," Strachan led the Saints in rushing in his rookie season of 1975. After his release by the Saints after the 1980 season he attempted to develop a career in real estate. Strachan was arrested for drug dealing in 1982 and was sentenced to 3 years in federal prison after several former teammates including Chuck Muncie, Dave Waymer,George Rogers and Frank Warren who had been offered immunity from prosecution agreed to testify against him.

Vaughn Dunbar

Vaughn Allen Dunbar (born September 4, 1968) is an American former professional football player who was a running back in the National Football League (NFL) for three seasons.  He played college football for the Indiana Hoosiers, and earned All-American accolades.  A first-round choice in the 1992 NFL draft, he played professionally for the New Orleans Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL.

Tom Barrington

George Thomas Barrington (January 29, 1944 – November 8, 2002) was an American football running back in the National Football League for the Washington Redskins and New Orleans Saints.  He played college football at The Ohio State University and was drafted in the third round of the 1966 NFL Draft.  Barrington was also selected in the sixteenth round of the 1966 AFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Tony Galbreath

Tony Dale Galbreath  (born January 29, 1954 in Fulton, Missouri) is a former American football running back in the National Football League for the New Orleans Saints, the Minnesota Vikings, and the New York Giants. He played college football at the University of Missouri and was drafted in the second round of the 1976 NFL Draft.
Galbreath was an All-Big Eight running back for the Missouri Tigers in 1974. He was elected team captain for the 1975 season and still ranks among the Tigers' all-time leading rushers, despite the fact that he played just two years of football after transferring from Indian Hill (Iowa) Junior College. 
Galbreath was a rookie in 1976 with the New Orleans Saints and was part of the "Thunder and Lightning" backfield, along with Saints' first round pick Chuck Muncie. Galbreath quickly became one of the top pass-catching running backs in the NFL. As a rookie, he was the NFL's sixth leading receiver. In 1978, his third season with the Saints, he finished second in the NFL in receiving. He played with the Saints for five seasons, and when he left the Saints, he ranked second in all-time rushing yards for the team. 
Galbreath was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in 1981. He played three years for the Vikings, primarily as a pass-catching back and blocker. Galbreath went to the New York Giants in 1984, essentially fulfilling the same role. He played four seasons with the Giants, including the 1986 season in which the Giants won the Super Bowl, as Galbreath was the team's second leading receiver. He retired after the 1987 season as the most prolific pass-catching running back in NFL history.
Galbreath was enshrined in the University of Missouri Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995. Galbreath was enshrined in the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame in 1991. In 2013, he was enshrined in the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Galbreath's family resides in Fulton.

Bill Butler

William R. Butler (born July 10, 1937 in Berlin, Wisconsin) is a former American football safety in the National Football League for the Green Bay Packers (1959), the Dallas Cowboys (1960), the Pittsburgh Steelers (1961) and the Minnesota Vikings (1962–1964). He played college football at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Antowain Smith

Antowain Drurell Smith (born March 14, 1972) is a former American Football running back in the National Football League who played nine NFL seasons, most notably with the New England Patriots.  At 6'2", 232 pounds, Smith's powerful running style made him an effective runner between the tackles.

Gill Fenerty

Lawrence Gill Fenerty, aka "Gill the Thrill", (born August 24, 1963) is a former running back in the Canadian Football League and the National Football League.
Fenerty graduated from Jesuit High School (New Orleans) and attended the College of the Holy Cross, where in 1983 he had an amazing game, rushing for 337 yards (on 18 carries) and 6 touchdowns versus Columbia University in a 77 to 28 victory. He is the program's all-time leading rusher with 3,680 yards. [1]
Leo Cahill of the Toronto Argonauts discovered him playing in Italy for the Bolzano Jets, where he rushed for 610 yards in half a season in 1986.In his first year with Toronto, 1987, he rushed for 879 yards and caught 53 passes, winning the CFL's Most Outstanding Rookie Award. He also scored a thrilling 61-yard touchdown reception in the Argos last second loss in the classic 75th Grey Cup game. In 1988, he would rush for 968 and catch 51 passes. On August 31 of that year, Fenerty rushed for a team record 215 yards in a single game against the Calgary Stampeders, eclipsing Ulysses Curtis' 36-year-old team record by seven yards.  In 1989, Fenerty set a then team record with 1247 yards rushing. He was an all star selection in every season he played, totalling 48 games.
Fenerty moved to his hometown to play for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League for the 1990 through 1993 seasons. He would play 31 games, rushing for 335 yards in 1990 and 477 in 1991, also catching 44 passes in the two years, as well as returning punts and kickoffs. He spent 1992 and 1993 on the Saints injured reserve with knee operations.
He ended his career with a brief stint with the CFL expansion Shreveport Pirates in 1994.

Mario Bates

Mario Doniel Bates (born January 16, 1973) is a former American football running back in the NFL for the New Orleans Saints, Arizona Cardinals, and the Detroit Lions. His brother, Michael also played in the NFL.Playing for the 1993 Arizona State Sun Devils, he carried the ball 246 times for 1,162 yards with 8 TD in just 11 games.  He became a 2nd Round pick in the 1994 NFL Draft.



Alvin Maxson

Alvin Earl Maxson (born November 12, 1951 in Beaumont, Texas) is a former American football running back in the National Football League. He was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the eighth round of the 1974 NFL Draft. He played college football at Southern Methodist.
Maxson also played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Houston Oilers and New York Giants.

Robert Clark "Bob" Gresham (born July 9, 1948) is a former American football running back in the National Football League. He played for the New Orleans Saints, the Houston Oilers, and the New York Jets. He was selected in the 1971 NFL Draft out of West Virginia.

Derek Brown

Derek Dernell Brown (born April 15, 1971 in Banning, California) is a former American football running back. Brown played for four seasons in the National Football League for the New Orleans Saints. He started his career at Servite High School in Anaheim, California, and graduated in 1993 from the University of Nebraska.
While at Servite High, a school with other notable football alumni such as Steve Beuerlein, Turk Schonert, and Blaine Nye, he set the Orange County single season rushing record with a mark of over 3,000 yards .
During his NFL career with the Saints he amassed 1,383 yards on 388 carries and scored six touchdowns in 56 games. He also caught 108 passes for 918 yards and three touchdowns. During this span he managed to only fumble the ball five times and returned five kicks for 71 yards.

Jed Collins

Jedidiah Gabriel "Jed" Collins (born March 3, 1986) is a former American football fullback. Collins was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2008. Collins played college football at Washington State.
Collins played three seasons for the New Orleans Saints. Collins has also been a member of the Chicago Bears, Kansas City Chiefs, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans.

Lamar Smith

Lamar Hunter Smith (born November 29, 1970, in Fort Wayne, Indiana) is a retired professional American football running back. He played in the NFL for the Seattle Seahawks, Miami Dolphins, New Orleans Saints, and Carolina Panthers from 1994 to 2003. On December 30, 2000, Smith carried the ball a then NFL record 40 times for the Dolphins in a wildcard playoff game against the Indianapolis Colts. He finished with 209 yards rushing, including a 17-yard touchdown run in overtime to give the Dolphins a 23-17 victory, Miami's most recent playoff victory as of the 2018 season.
