You have to be deeply cynical not to fall under the spell of a really good rom-com. There are a few people out there who are immune to the charms of this genre. The best new romantic comedy films could probably win them over, though. The funniest new rom-coms offer all the things viewers could want -- big stars, huge laughs, and grand finales designed to warm your heart. They make you want to fall in love.

Perhaps what's most impressive, though, is how diverse recent romantic comedy movies have been. In the '90s and early '00s, most of them tended to look and feel weirdly identical. They generally followed the exact same template. Certain actors appeared in them, time and again, with Sandra Bullock, Kate Hudson, Reese Witherspoon, and Matthew McConaughey all seeing their careers rise because of big hits within the genre. Once-fresh ideas, such as the race to the airport to declare love before someone hops on a plane, became tiresome cliches of funny romance movies. Current romantic comedy movies have opted to avoid such conventions, finding funny new ways to tell their stories.
