Modern war movies benefit from high-tech special effects and groundbreaking advancements in both cinematography and editing. They look and feel more realistic than ever before. That has the effect of giving the viewer an intense experience. Watching the crop of current war movies gives you some semblance of what it must be like to be in combat. Thankfully, you can do this from the safety of a theater seat or the couch in your living room.
There have sadly been many wars to draw from. Recent war movies have centered, like dozens before them, around WWI, WWII, the Civil War, and the Vietnam War. Others have been about more contemporary wars or military conflicts. 13 Hours, for example, is about Benghazi, while Thank You For Your Service looks at the effects of the war in Iraq. In some cases, the films depict life on the battlefield. A couple of them examine the impact of war once the soldier comes home. Those examples offer intensity of an entirely different sort.
