This is a list of the best New York Jets of all time. Originally called the Titans, the New York Jets took part in two of the AFL's biggest moments before the merger of the two leagues in 1970. First, the Jets were able to lure one of the best players in franchise history to them in 1965. Curtis Martin

Curtis James Martin Jr. (born May 1, 1973) is a former American football running back who spent the majority of his career with the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL). Martin began his professional career with the New England Patriots, who selected him in the third round of the 1995 NFL Draft. As a free agent in 1998, he joined the Jets where he finished his career in 2007 due to a career-ending knee injury in the 2006 NFL season. He retired as the fourth leading rusher in NFL history. He was selected as a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2012.

Freeman McNeil

Freeman McNeil (born April 22, 1959) is a former professional American football player who was selected by the New York Jets in the first round as the third overall pick of the 1981 NFL Draft.
After leading Banning High School to the Los Angeles City football title, the 5'11", 214 lbs. running back attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he was a two-time all-Pacific-10 Conference selection. In his final game, he caught a deflected pass from quarterback Jay Schroeder that was tipped by USC defensive back Jeff Fisher and went 57 yards for the winning touchdown with two minutes left in the Bruins' 20–17 win.
McNeil played in 12 NFL seasons for the Jets from 1981 to 1992. During the mid to late 1980s he was a member of the Jets' "Two Headed Monster" backfield along with teammate Johnny Hector, a tandem that ranked among the league's elite.  When he retired he was the Jets all-time leading rusher with 8,074 yards; he was surpassed by Curtis Martin and currently ranks second in Jets team history. In 1982, McNeil led the NFL in rushing with 786 yards. He was the first Jet to the lead the league in rushing.  He is one of a few running backs in NFL history to average 4.0 yards per carry in every season he played.
From 1990 to 1992 McNeil was the lead plaintiff in a case won by jury verdict that struck down the NFL's Plan B free agency system, under which teams could protect 37 players. McNeil and the seven other plaintiffs were among the protected players listed by their teams. The system was deemed too restrictive and a violation of antitrust laws. However, Freeman was not one of the four plaintiffs awarded damages. The suit is considered a major step in the achievement of free agency rights by the NFL Players Association.In 2005, he was inducted into the Nassau County Sports Hall of Fame.

Matt Snell

Matt Snell (born August 18, 1941) is a retired professional football player who played for the New York Jets. He was Jets' owner Sonny Werblin's first coup, prior to his 1965 acquisition of Joe Namath.  A powerful fullback out of Ohio State University, Snell's 1964 signing jolted the crosstown Giants, who didn't draft Snell until the fourth round, and offered him a fraction of what the Jets gave him as their first-round choice.

Emerson Boozer

Emerson Boozer (born July 4, 1943) is a former running back in the American Football League (AFL) and in the National Football League (NFL). In the last year of separate drafts by the AFL and the NFL, Boozer signed with the AFL's New York Jets, rather than with an NFL team.  He played his entire professional career with the Jets. Boozer was a member of the Jets team that defeated the NFL's champion Baltimore Colts, 16–7, in Super Bowl III.  Before joining the American Football League, Boozer played college football at the Maryland State College, which is now the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

LaDainian Tomlinson

LaDainian Tramayne Tomlinson (born June 23, 1979) is a former professional American football player who was a running back in the National Football League (NFL) for eleven seasons. He is widely considered one of the greatest running backs of all time.  He played the majority of his career with the San Diego Chargers, who selected him with the fifth overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft. Tomlinson was invited to five Pro Bowls, was an All-Pro six times, and won consecutive rushing titles in 2006 and 2007.  At the time of his retirement, he ranked fifth in career rushing yards (13,684), seventh in all-purpose yards (18,456), second in career rushing touchdowns (145), and third in total touchdowns (162). He is currently an analyst on NFL Network. After being elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2014, Tomlinson was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August 2017, his first year of eligibility; he is the first Pro Football Hall of Famer whose professional career began in the 21st century.
Tomlinson played college football for Texas Christian University (TCU), earned consensus All-America honors, and won the Doak Walker Award as the best college running back.  He spent nine seasons with the Chargers. During the 2006 NFL season, he set several NFL touchdown scoring records and received numerous honors and awards including the NFL's Most Valuable Player Award and the Associated Press's Offensive Player of the Year Award. In 2010, he signed as a free agent with the New York Jets, playing for two seasons before retiring after 2011.
Tomlinson is often referred to by his initials, L.T. An effective passer on halfback option plays, Tomlinson threw seven touchdown passes and ranks second behind Walter Payton (8) for non-quarterbacks since the AFL–NFL merger in 1970. He was named to the NFL's 2000s All-Decade Team as one of the top running backs of the 2000s.

Leon Washington

Leon Dewitt Washington Sr. (born August 29, 1982) is a former American football running back and return specialist. He currently serves as a coach for the Detroit Lions. He was drafted by the New York Jets in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He played college football at Florida State. Washington also played for the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots.

Bilal Powell

Bilal Powell (born October 27, 1988) is an American football running back for the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the Jets in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He played college football at Louisville. As of August 2019, Powell is the longest-tenured active member of the New York Jets.

Le'Veon Bell

Le'Veon Andrew Bell Sr. (/ˈleɪviɒn/ LAY-vee-on; born February 18, 1992) is an American football running back for the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Michigan State, and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. After a decent rookie season where he ran for over 800 yards, Bell broke out in his second season with the Steelers, totaling over 2,200 combined yards and made the Pro Bowl. Bell missed several games in the 2015 and 2016 seasons due to drug-related suspensions and injuries, but still put up solid numbers and was voted to the NFL Top 100 both times. In 2017, he had a league-high 321 carries for 1,291 yards, as well as 85 catches for 655 yards, and made the third Pro Bowl of his career. The next year, Bell refused to sign the franchise tag placed upon him by Pittsburgh, resulting in him sitting out the entire 2018 season. He signed with the Jets the following off-season.

Thomas Jones

Thomas Jones (born August 19, 1978) is an American actor who performs as Thomas Q. Jones, and a former American football running back who played 12 seasons in the National Football League (NFL).  He played college football for the University of Virginia.  He was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals seventh overall in the 2000 NFL Draft, and played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in addition to the New York Jets, Chicago Bears and Kansas City Chiefs.  He retired among the top 25 leading rushers in NFL history (currently 26th, after LeSean McCoy passed him), and a member of the 10,000 yards club.
In 2013, performing under the name Thomas Q. Jones, he began an acting career. Among his credits are 2015's Straight Outta Compton, a starring role in A Violent Man, and a series regular role in the Luke Cage TV series.



Chris Ivory

Christopher Lee Ivory (born March 22, 1988) is an American football running back who is currently a free agent. He was signed by the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2010 and has also played for the New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Buffalo Bills. He played college football at Washington State and Tiffin.

John Riggins

Robert John Riggins (born August 4, 1949), nicknamed "The Diesel" and "Riggo", is an American former football running back who played professionally in the National Football League (NFL) for the New York Jets and Washington Redskins. He was known for his powerful running style and productivity well into the latter years of his career; in 1983 at age 34, he rushed for an NFL single-season record 24 touchdowns, and again led the league in rushing touchdowns the following season at age 35. Although he had only one Pro Bowl appearance in his career, Riggins had his greatest success in the postseason, and was named the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XVII where he scored one touchdown and rushed for 166 yards in a 27-17 win for the Washington Redskins over the Miami Dolphins. Riggins was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992.

Shonn Greene

Shonn Greene (born August 21, 1985) is a former American football running back. He played college football for the University of Iowa, and was recognized as a unanimous All-American.  He was drafted by the New York Jets in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Greene also played for the Tennessee Titans.

Adrian Murrell

Adrian Byran Murrell (born October 16, 1970) is a former professional American football running back.  He was drafted by the New York Jets in the fifth round of the 1993 NFL Draft after playing collegiately for the West Virginia Mountaineers.  Murrell played in nine NFL seasons from 1993 to 2000 and 2003.

Johnny Hector

Johnny Lyndell Hector (born November 26, 1960 in Lafayette, Louisiana), is a former professional American football player who was selected by the New York Jets in the second round of the 1983 NFL Draft. A 5 ft 11 in (1.80 m), 200 lb running back from Texas A&M, Hector played 10 NFL seasons for the New York Jets from 1983 to 1992. Hector's best season as a pro came during the 1987 season when he was tied with Charles White for most rushing touchdowns in the league with 11. During the mid to late 1980s, he served as a member of the 'Two-Headed Monster' backfield along with Freeman McNeil, creating a one-two punch at running back among the most potent in the league.
Hector compiled 4,280 rushing yards on 1,051 carries and 41 touchdowns; he also caught 188 passes for 1,661 yards and three touchdowns.  His last NFL touchdown was against the New England Patriots on December 23, 1990.
He played high school football at New Iberia Senior High School and graduated in 1979.

Matt Forté

Matthew Garrett Forte (born December 10, 1985) is a former American football running back who played ten seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Tulane and was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft. Forte established himself as a dual-threat running back who is capable of earning yards as a rusher and receiver and he's one of only three players on the "1,000-yard rushing, 100-catch season" club. He spent eight years with the Bears before playing for the New York Jets for two seasons..

Bruce Harper

Bruce Harper (born June 20, 1955) is a retired American football running back and kick returner for the New York Jets of the NFL. He was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Kutztown by the Jets in 1977. Bruce Harper is the all-time kick returner in New York Jets history with 5407 yards in kickoff returns. He also served as the Jets punt returner from 1977 to 1982, totalling 1748 PR yards and 1 touchdown. Harper also played running back. His total yards are 11429: 1829 rushing yards, 2409 receiving yards, 1784 PR yards and 5407 KR yards.
Harper played high school football at Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood. He moved on to play at Kutztown State College, where he became the school's first 1,000 yard rusher.
Harper's 42 jersey is the jersey worn by diehard Jets fan  Fireman Ed.Harper was a longtime resident of Norwood, New Jersey, but now lives in Closter, New Jersey.Harper is founder and director of the non-for-profit organization Heroes & Cool Kids. Based in school systems throughout New Jersey, the mentoring program reaches out to elementary and middle-school kids by high school athletes and students of the same district. The high school students are trained through the Heroes and Cool Kids' curriculum and by former professional athletes, such as former NFL player, Keith Elias, former LA Lakers player, John Celestand, and former NJ Nets player, Tim Bassett.

George Verdell Nock (born March 4, 1946 in Baltimore, Maryland) is a former American football running back.   He played in the American Football League for the New York Jets in 1969, and in the National Football League for the Jets and Washington Redskins.

Clark Gaines

Clark Daniel Gaines (born February 1, 1954) is a former American football running back in the National Football League (NFL). He was also a coach in the United States Football League (USFL). He played for the New York Jets and the Kansas City Chiefs over the course of his seven-year NFL career. Gaines was the running backs and special teams coach for the New Jersey Generals of the USFL.

Richie Anderson

Richard Darnoll Anderson (born September 13, 1971) is a former American football Fullback who played 13 seasons in the National Football League for the New York Jets and the Dallas Cowboys. He played college football at Penn State University.

Scott Dierking

Scott Dierking (born May 24, 1955) is a former running back in the National Football League. He played for the New York Jets from 1977-1983 after being drafted in Round 4 of the 1977 NFL Draft.

Johnny Johnson

Johnny Johnson, Jr. (born June 11, 1968) is a retired American football running back who played in the National Football League for the New York Jets and the Phoenix Cardinals between 1990 and 1994.

Blair Thomas

Blair Lamar Thomas (born October 7, 1967) is a former professional American football running back in the National Football League for the New York Jets, New England Patriots, Dallas Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers. He played college football at Penn State University.

Carl Garrett

Carl L. Garrett (born August 31, 1947) is a former American football halfback who began his professional career with the American Football League's Boston Patriots.
Carl Garrett caught 29 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns in 1969, and ran the ball for over five yards per carry with 137 attempts for 691 yards and five touchdowns. He was the 1969 Sporting News ' AFL Rookie of the Year. He was also selected to the AFL All-Star team in 1969.
Garrett was involved in a highly unusual trade just prior to the 1971 season.  The Patriots traded Garrett to the Dallas Cowboys for running back Duane Thomas.  Shortly after the players reported to their new teams, the trade was rescinded, and Thomas returned to the Cowboys and Garrett to the Patriots.  The Cowboys ultimately won the Super Bowl at the end of the 1971 season with Duane Thomas as their leading rusher in the game.
