The best NHL teams of all time are those National Hockey league teams who have performed the best throughout the years, won the most Stanley Cup Championships and overall dominated the league. Most, if not all, hockey fans are partial but in the record books, these teams stand among the elite as the winningest and best NHL teams ever.
If you judge a better NHL team by the number of championships under their belt, only one team can take that number one spot. The Montreal Canadiens, in their nearly 100-year history, have a whopping 24 Stanley Cup wins. The closest competitor, the Toronto Maple Leafs, only has 13. Following in third comes the Detroit Red Wings with 11. Of those three only Detroit has won the title recently, in 2008, with the last Canadiens championship back in 1993 and the Maple Leafs going back to 1967 for their most recent championship.
On the other end of the spectrum, there are also a handful of NHL teams who never won a championship yet. The St. Louis Blues, Buffalo Sabres, Vancouver Canucks, Washington Capitals, San Jose Sharks, Florida Panthers, Phoenix Coyotes, Nashville Predators, Columbus Blue Jackets, Minnesota Wild, and Winnipeg Jets all fall into that category.
So how do you decide which NHL teams should be considered the best? Do you look at titles or regular season performance? Does fan support get any credit?
